KT Dinner Tonight - West Coast Florida Gathering (pic)

I got my dose of happiness tonight and Nita hugs! We had a great time at Cody's Roadhouse. Front row is me (Barbara aka mimi_boo) and Christa (Dances_in_Gardens). Back row is Cousin Tim, Nita_AZ, Sharon_FL and Ernie.

Great food, lots of laughs and gee, I miss them already!

That's the problem I have here... no decent trees with limbs low enough to hang plants from in summer. I only have one... the French Pink Pussywillow shrub, which is actually more of a tree now. I've been pruning it to stay at a manageable size, and it now has some lower limbs that might be good for hanging a few plants on this coming summer. It's situated on the east side of a building, so it's sheltered nicely. I thought I'd summer over my orchids in its branches, and also some of my cacti type plants. My bulbs will either be staying indoors, or they'll come out if I can locate a fine mesh cloth to cover them with. I am not willing to share them with Narcissus Bulb Flies! By spring, I should have my indoor light situation fixed to my satisfaction. I'd love to take every plant I have outside for the nicer weather, but I just don't want to end up posting a horror story about destroyed bulbs! There have been too many posted already, and if nothing else, I've learned a thing or two about insect damage! Tomato cages are definitely within my budget, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to purchase one of those gorgeous black wrought iron towers... the flowers of this night bloomer certainly deserve a special home! I look forward to seeing photos of your tree, complete with your Epiphyllum collection!

alisande - please come if you can. This is all so new to me. I have been addicted to the kitchen forum during our re-hab (a very long story) but during that time, I would lurk at KT and I am excited about meeting some KT folks. Perhaps, alisande, we could do a little research re the "oldies but goodies" boyfriends and arrange a coincidental meeting -;) I apologize for using GW names. I just have not yet got your realies into my 64 year old mind! And, I have heard it gets worse..........

After wandering through this thread I'm hungry again. I might have to have a midnight snack in a bit. So much great food and ideas! Ann's neighborly crabs are right at the top for me though. I love dungeness and rarely get it here. Your ribs and turkey look great too. Ruthanna, you had me at birch beer. Brought back fond memories. My fathers club, a bar that specialized in shuffleboard, had a big picnic each summer and got birch beer in kegs. What a treat! Our little township is known for it's great produce and we always brought the corn... mmm... hundreds of ears to shuck. No wonder I can shuck corn in two pulls..lol. Fish: Jim, speaking of fish, have you ever had blowfish? They pretty much got fished out around here around when Lou was saying the croakers got fished out. We used to catch them in Barnegat bay by the boatful. Small fish but the meat is soooo sweet, reminds me of crab a bit. Miss those buggers. So far here you still don't need a license for salt water, although I think there are limits on some things, crab, etc.. Around here the corn started so we have had just that for dinner several times. The bicolor comes in first so that's what we've been eating. Wonderful this year so far. There have been a few tomatoes too so we had BLT's this week on some whole grain bread. The heat has kept a lot of the regular cooking at a minimum. I mentioned on the pattypan thread that we had gotten some sunburst pattypan last weekend. I put some in the spaghetti sauce I made for my week long breakfast/lunch gallon of food. I had some potatoes left over from Sunday so I made gnocchi to have with some of my sauce. Gawd I love gnocchi! Other recent cooking was a pork roast I crocked and made into pulled pork and had bbq sandwiches several times..last week. Another night we had grits with some veggies on the side. Too many days without meat so I had to roast a chicken for Christy. Smiles. Here is the caps with the patty pan, and of course Jessie watching just in case the bowl slipped while I took the pic.

Everything looks so good, but this time it's Maureen's roasted potatoes and Ann T's perfectly rare beef that has me hungry. Stacy, I love that "tree" you have there. He's sure getting big and looking more like his Dad all the time. Sharon, thanks for the weather report. I missed those. OK, let's see if I can catch up. We had Thanksgiving dinner, of course. On Friday Elery came up and we had leftovers, he had to work Thanksgiving so that was his Thanksgiving dinner. I made this dessert, a version of coconut cream pie. His grandmother always made coconut cream pie for Thanksgiving but he doesn't eat much sugar. So, the sugarfree coconut cream dessert, with gingersnap crumbs instead of pie crust: Saturday we made turkey sausage with dried cherries, it was good but not worth the skinning and deboning of all those turkey legs. For supper we had a "pizza" made of phyllo dough topped with some fresh sausage, artichokes and portobello mushrooms: I poached some pears in white wine with vanilla beans, whole cloves and cinnamon sticks: Those pears became part of this salad, romaine topped with pears, walnuts and fresh pancetta. Yes, Elery and I made pancetta too, I'll make a different thread on that, maybe tomorrow. Anyway, the salad was dressed with a light honey mustard dressing: On Sunday Elery made tortilla soup and turkey tacos out of leftover turkey, served that with a glass of commercially made Sangria: Last night it was turkey pot pie. Here it is before and after baking: I still have turkey left, but no more for another day or two, please! Annie

Hi y'all..
Thanks Barb for posting the pic! YES..what a wonderful time with our KT buddies. Nita & Barb looked great as usual & it was SO nice to finally meet 'Dances'!
FYI..Ernie is my absolutley wonderful SO! And can you believe the girls (Nita & Dances) were going back to the FL State fair tonight after our reunion to taste some of the 'food on a stick! I just KNOW they won't leave until they've tried the chocolate dipped bacon strips!!
Great time-how does that saying go?

Y'all look great, as usual! Did you have good food or did you even stop talking long enough to eat anything? I know how those get-togethers can be!

Have you had nice weather? I am freezing to death just thinking about wearing a sleeveless top/dress. Sheesh, I haven't seen my neck in like, forever! That's the one thing I miss about living in FL, seems like I'm cold for 5 or 6 months out of the year, here.

Chocolate covered bacon? Um. I guess if it was crispy it would be good. I know choc covered ruffled chips are to die for!

Flamey...the photo in the paper & desciption said it is thick sliced Hormel applewood smoked bacon...you got 4 strips with a cup of syrupy chocolate dipping sauce. Nita even tried the Tornado potato..spiral cut potato chips on a stick. She opted for them on the plate instead of the stick-it was a 'two hand' treat. The fair also offered deep fried green beans, fried pickles (yuk) and lots more things new this year. I definitely am going for the green beans on Tuesday afternoon when Ernie & I go over.

I ate some deep fried green beans back at the first part of December at a restaurant in a nearby town. They were pretty good. I love fried dill pickles, both slices and spears.

Sharon, please tell us about any other new foods you see while at the fair.

Didn't Ernie have some heart problems a few months ago? I may be wrong, but it seems like I remember something about it. He looks nice and healthy now.I hope he feels as good as he's looking.

Linda..yes-he had vascular surgery in early November...they couldn't stent it-they had to clean out his artery. Pretty painful for some time-the nerves in his foot have caused him pain but it's nearly gone now. We love to dance & I think it's been helpng him by dancing-vs. babying his foot. Thanks for asking!
I will definitely be on the lookout for new & unusual foods this year & will report back.
I don't think that I will ever get used to seeing the gigantic turkey legs they sell at Fair time here!! I mean-folks walk around carrying one of these legs-almost as big as my forearm!!! LOL!.Must be a southern item we didn't see much of in northeast PA.
