It doesn't really LOOK bad. Was it really that bad?

Looks fine to me...like the vegetable frittatas I make when I have a lot of vegetables in the crisper. We love them!

The ingredients are probably good, it is just the technique that didn't work! A microwave frittata? I don't think so . . . .

Thanks for the write up. You have a wonderful, understated humor. I imagine the kiss of death was the texture. Eggs and microwaves just don't mix, imo. Was it rubbery?

You guys hit the nail on the head. The ingredients were good: tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, fresh basil etc. It was the rubbery eggs that put it over the edge. The cooked pasta the recipe called for also may have helped. Here's the video if anyone is feeling particularly brave this morning. I shoulda known, anything from the Panasonic website shouldn't be trusted. Oh, they also claim that a turkey breast will remain juicy and crisp up in the microwave if you use enough butter under the skin!!! :P

So what have you made with good intentions that turned out to be a disaster? And/or what product marketing have you fallen for?

Well, I've been known to microwave an egg at work to put on an English muffin, but it takes one minute, tops. I can't imagine microwaving eggs long enough to cook vegetables. And cooked pasta? In a frittata? I've never done that, it would be the kiss of death for sure, for me.

I don't normally fall for marketing strategies but I did try to can chili once. I should have known better, I think ground meat gets a strange mushy texture when I put it in a crockpot, so a pressure canner would have to be bad. Didn't stop me, though, I went right ahead. There was a recipe in the Ball Blue Book, had to be good. Right? Ahem. Soft, mushy, tomato flavored ground beef in a bean mush. Mush within a mush, it was just awful.

On the upside I did find that although the recipes in the Ball Blue Book are safe to can, they don't always taste great. In fact, there are several recipes in that book that I don't care for at all. Ask me how I know. (grin)

So wait. Maybe I did fall for the marketing, at least the marketing of that particular book. It's a wonderful reference guide for times, acidity, safety matters. It's my "go to" book for canning just plain vegetables, fruits, meat products. It's not necessarily a great recipe source.

I fairly often make a microwaved egg....but I only cook one egg for 35 seconds.

That's why it didn't work...that "chef" is a man hired to show that you can do something in a microwave besides heat up a cup of coffee or thaw meat! And that things work best in a panasonic!!
He took 20 minutes to cook that in the microwave....I could cook a fritatta in a pan on my stove top and do a quick top brown in the oven in that time!!
And....where was the cheese????

I knew I wasn't alone... I love this forum! Sorry to hear about the chili Annie, it would be depressing to be so let down by such a good resource!

I have a Panasonic microwave, almost exactly like the one used in the video. It really is a great microwave. It heats up leftovers and thaws meats like a dream. Heck, it even produces a crispy hot pocket. That's something to cheer about in my dh's world! I guess I know now not to push it beyond those capabilities and never listen to a "chef" on a manufacturer's website...

Maybe it's because I didn't stand 2.3feet from the microwave with my arms raised over my head doing the "good frittata from the microwave" dance. I think that would have made all the difference. That or about a cup of cheese. One of the two.

And including the time you spent cutting stuff into "even little dice"...
I would have put the oil onto the pan, turned on the heat and as I chopped the veggies tossed them into the pan...and kept chopping and cooking....give a stir now and then....when I was done chopping....beat some eggs, turn down the fire...add some cheese, some eggs, more cheese...cook a little and then put into the oven to top brown!
And you don't even have to do the Hoodoo dance!

I have cooked a lot of quiches with veggies in the microwave and they have turned out fine. I wonder what went wrong with yours. Maybe the power level on yours and the recipe was different. Microwaves can vary a lot. I always start out at a low power and then only cook it on high for the last minute or two. I also love to cook custard in the microwave. It always comes out perfect.
