They accepted our offer....got my house! :))

I don't know much more than that. My husband can't get off until the 5th of March, so will take them a cashier's check then. Hopefully, we can get it moved between the 20th and the 27th, because that is when he will be off again.

Now, don't ask if I am excited. I think I lack adrenalin or something, because excitement isn't something I normally feel.

I will just say that once it is moved here, I will be happy...and then the work begins, but it is a nice time of year to be working on a house. So...yes, I am very happy.

Thank you for all your good wishes, and I will take some pictures and post them, and you all can see how crazy we are to want this old house. :))

Ladyvixen, we were in our 30's in 1985 when we bought our 1898 house. Looking back, we were very young. Neither my husband nor I had any skills or knowledge at all about how to work on houses. All we knew was that our house was nearly intact, was very inexpensive, and that we loved it. I had always wanted an old house, and had been buying things such as light fixtures, hardware, etc., for years before we bought the house. We bought the house "as is". Fortunately we were both employed and had no children. We had to hire almost everything done, and it needed a lot of work. We did not take a vacation for years. Then came a time of around a year or two that my husband was either unemployed or underemployed. During that time, the house just didn't get worked on. We didn't care that we lived in an unfinished house; in fact, I thought it was beautiful from day one. We have a corner in the dining room where all the little balls the cats play with end up, but you don't notice the slope otherwise. It has taken us over 25 years, and we are almost finished, but still have some work to do. We should have it finished by now, but are in our 60's now and do like to take a vacation now and then. Also we sometimes didn't have work done even when we had the money, because we were tired of the mess of having things torn up. We lived with a practically non-existent kitchen until about 2004. I said all along that this house was my dream house. People would look at me funny, but it was and still is my dream house. Don't let others talk you out of your dream. Make the decision based on what you want and what you think you can handle. If you think you can live with an unfinished house for years, go for it. If you have to have everything finished and perfect, you shouldn't buy an old house. I have the ablility to not even see the unfinished stuff until we get ready to do something about it. I meant this to be an encouragement to you, but reading back on it, maybe this will scare you because it has taken us so long. Don't let that scare you--you can do it faster than we did! I typed in "can't stand my stepson" and found all these postings. I too can't stand my SS. He is 11 yrs old, an only child and can do no wrong in his fathers eyes. I have 3 children of my own ages 5,9,12 (2 girls and 1 boy). I have been with my BF now for 2 years. When I came into the relationship my SS was sleeping in the same bed with his dad. He was 9 yrs old at the time. He is very spoiled(4wheelers,dirtbike, snowmobile and so on). His mother is in the picture and she has him everyother weekend and a few nites a week. Here is the problem....My SS is very jealous of me and my children. He lays on his dads lap and hugs and kisses him on the lips all the time. It is no exageration he does this all the time. It makes me and my kids uncomfortable. My SS is a bigger boy and he weighs about 165ibs. My BF allows this. My SS is also very mean to my children when my BF is not around. He is very sneaky and manipulative and my BF does not see this. I have tried so many times and many different ways to approach and talk about this to my BF but he gets so so so defensive and tells me that this isn't going to work and he chooses his son over me and my kids and I need to go and move out. So now I feel I can't talk to him so I hold everything inside and so do my kids. I have a fair amount of resentment towards my BF and my SS. Im angry and frustrated. My son is a year and half older than my SS and he is so frustrated with him. My son is outgoing. He is in all the sports and is one of the star players. He is also an honor roll student if not high honor. My BF came down on me so hard a few weeks ago saying that his son is coming to him complaining that my son gets to go skiing every weekend and do stuff for all his sports and its not fair. He told me that since me and my F____ng kids moved in his son has taken backseat. This killed me. Im so hurt. My son tried to help teach my SS how to ski and even snowboard but he didn't like it. He gave up very quickly. My son does go skiing most every weekend because it is good exercise, he likes it, and he is not in front of the tv, ipod or laptop. My son too is a bigger boy like my SS. When my son does all these things, i take my girls to the movies, go sliding, let them have a friend over and so on. I also do the same for my SS. My SS is so manipulative also. When its time for him to visit his mom and be with her, he cries to his dad and says he doesn't want to go so my BF lets him stay home. We have it set up so that all the kids go visit with their other parents on the same weekend so we have every other weekend to ourselves. We agreed that we needed this time to be togethter to make this blended family thing work. My SS will go in the bathroom and secretly call his dad and ask to come home from his moms. And most of the time he lets him. My children have a great relationship with their dad and so do I. I'm just so frustrated. He never says no to him. When my SS calls he asks what we are doing and my BF won't tell him the truth because he doesn't want to upset him so he lies to him and just tells him we are home doing nothing. I feel like a nothing. Im so mad and angry. Even my BF's friends don't like the way my SS treats and has treated their kids. They complain to me all the time and no one dares to say a thing to my BF. What do I do? I love my BF and have a fair amount of like for my SS. My children do love my BF and can do without the SS. I'm fed up and need a little advice. Sometimes I feel guilty for feeling so negative about my SS. I get a lot of anxienty around him and Im trying to help my kids too. I tell them to ignore him and point out that someday things will change. I believe very much that my BF's and SS relationship is a little unhealthy. My BF is treating him like a baby and not letting him grow up. I feel he is so needy of his son as his son is so needy of his dad. I always try to take my kids and leave them alone to be together because it was expressed to me several times by my BF that he wants a fair amount of time with his son alone. When I do leave and give them this time, I am treated poorly when i return. I just don't know. Please I will take some advice.

I have been following Susanka's work for more than a decade. She uses very light wood in her house because she practices out of Minnesota, which is far north lattitude. I live in Seattle, WA and we are at 48th parallel. We have about 5 to 6 hours of grey daylight during Dec and Jan. It is terrible. We have to really pay attention to how we use natural light and materials around us, and houses with lighter wood feel better in this climate and location. Think Scandinavian furniture and colors and why they work in that environment. Having said that, Scandinavian sentiment of everything painted white/grey/light brey blue will work really well in that house. I would make sure that the cabinet style and trim style you pick is not too traditional with too many rounded or fluted ornamentation. The house really calls for crisp corners on all the wood work. You really need to pick finishing materials with modern esthetic in this house. If you end up picking white modern feeling kitchen, it will not work with black painted wood work. It will look too much like yo-yo, where you could not make up your mind. If you use light blue greys, then they will not work too well with orange/red/green colors as you already know. However, if you paint the woodwork in creamy yellowish/tan/brownish color, then you can keep the orange, red colors for accent. Black kitchen without too much uppers and light counter top would work quite well with your black woodwork. If you eliminate much of upper cabinets, then it will not feel too dark even with larger over hangs. I would paint the walls very light/bright. One of my architect friend designed her house that has that similar sentiment with Susanka's house with peaked high pitched roof. She used black slab doors and marble counter top with minimal uppers. it does not feel dark at all. Do you like painted white kitchens that have modern esthetic? You need to ask yourself if you are attracted to more traditional feel of white kitchens or if is the color of white in the kitchens you see. If you prefer the traditional look of white kitchens, you will not be very happy in this modern feeling "house". You need to accept that you want more traditional type of finished in your house. This will be difficult to pull off in this house because the rooflines are so non-traditional. You don't want that feeling that the kitchen looks out of place in the house.... Modern houses have a very different feel to the entire house. I live in a home with three walls are mostly windows and with no walls between LR/DR/kitchen. The wood cabinets do not feel "cheap" in these homes if you make sure the cabinets go with the house. If you put in the wrong type of cabinets, then they feel like builder grade cheap wood cabinets that do not belong in the house. Some of the ways to get less cheap looking wood cabinets it to look at custom made veneer cabinets. I would explore (look at lots of images) more modern looking kitchens using either dark or light wood and see how you like them. Even if you paint the kitchen a light color, the kitchen has to feel modern in that house. Are you okay with that? If you still are attracted to more traditional feel of "white" kitchens, then I think you need to really ask yourself if you want this house. Go look at some books that publish Susanka's work. They all have very similar vernacular in what she uses; maple or other light wood (beech is very commonly used Scandinavian wood) cabinets with shaker style or slab doors and simple mouldings/trim. I am asking a very obvious question but you have to really accept the architectural scheme and the decorating scheme of the house that you are committing to. Not everyone wants a modern house. You may be much happier in a traditional type of home. This is not too late to get what you really want! Often, people here see kitchens as a stand alone from the house. Your house is not like that. The entire house is viewed from one perspective as most modern houses are since there are no walls separating the rooms. The entire decorating scheme has to fit together in one quick "look". The more you steer away from that one quick look fitting in, the less pulled together your house will feel. Even if you don't love the light wood kitchen, if it works in the house and you LOVE the house, I would bite the bullet and go with it. I disagree with the comment that the painted walls last less than the kitchens. You will spend easily $5000 to $10,000 to have the living area repainted, if it is as big as you say it is. My living area costs about $3000 to $5000 to have it painted everytime. I don't change colors on a whim. I also pick paint color based on what is already there. Often, there are not many possible choices because I am limited by the wood tone, colors of furniture, flooring etc. Painting is NOT a cheap investment, unless you do it yourself. Even then, you are committing many many weekends to doing nothing but painting. Look at how many walls you have to paint. Each wall takes primer plus two coats of paint, minimum. I doubt that you will paint walls yourself since you have 5 kids.... When you put the entire house together, you will end up loving the entire house or not. If you love the house, even if there are elements that were not your first pick, you end up appreciating why you have to make those choices and accept them and will learn to love how the entire house pulled together. During a poor response despite multiple showings and price reductions, a buyer made an offer on 5/8/15 and insisted on 5/29 closing, giving us just three weeks to move contents of our house in NJ to a couple of new town homes in Blaine WA, one primarily to use as storage while we build a new home nearby; we had to pay extra to the moving company to expedite the move, three day packing and two day load ending on 5/28. The sale contract had a mortgage contingency however in "Sufficient Assets" section there was mention that buyer will need funds from his home sale, that was under contract and the contract was verified by my realtor however there was no contingency clause in our contract for his home sale. Buyer's mortgage was approved shortly, which was only for $100k since he expected to use entire proceeds of his home sale to purchase mine. Then one week prior to scheduled closing date, my realtor informed me the buyer's buyer walked and that my buyer signed release to his buyer (God only knows why). My realtor prepared an extention to the contract since the buyer had capacity to take an additional loan which would need around three weeks and his mortgage company agreed to the loan, subject to underwriting. In the meantime I also agreed to make allowances to fix the driveway and had a couple of other things fixed which were reported in inspection, whilst the painful home contents move occured. This morning the realtor called me to say the buyer is not interested in purchasing the home (no reasons given) and sent me a release form to sign (I have not signed), so $10,000 ernest money may be released to the buyer. I'm at loss if I should fight for a piece of $10k or just let it go. Other complications and inconveniences due to an earlier 5/29 move is that I had to move to WA in April since my client insisted I start; my wife stayed behind to deal with the movers and to wait on her business sale closing, scheduled around 6/13. She is so stressed out, is currently staying in a hotel, whilst the home is empty and devoid of any furniture, all of which would have been tolerable had the home sale gone through. I think this is the biggest screwup we've been involved in, since I moved to the US some 18 years ago. I can't believe it happened to us. Can't wait for her to join me on 6/20. I think we'll spend the following weekend in Vegas just to help release her stress; at this time I really could not care about much else. All this, to be closer to our daughter and her family especially a granddaughter and second one on the way; yeah a silver lining to a cloud.

It was on blocks, originally and will go back on blocks.

My current house was built to be a shop...storage for my husband's tools. I moved into it because I wanted to move down here so badly, and but we didn't have enough money to fix it into a "real house". I have lived, sort of like camping out...for the past 10 years. Until recently, didn't have any money to do anything. My husband was a commercial shrimper for 45 years and it just got so you couldn't make a living doing it any more. Of course, he had to keep on...didn't have a lot of alternatives. However, he went to school and got his tow boat captain license and is a captain on a tow boat now. Pay is good.

As for what we will do with my other "house"...which really isn't a house...maybe make it back into storage. It isn't very near the spot we will put the "new old" house, but I wouldn't connect them, anyway.

The man we bought this place from, planned to build a house here and built up a spot for it, but his wife didn't want to live out in the boondocks, so they divorced and he sold it to us. We will put the house in the spot he prepared for his house.

Believe me...no one wants this house, but me. Well, one other guy wanted it but the secretary of the company told him
$35,000 and he actually got a banker to go out there and see if he would loan him the money. Of course, no one will loan money on it. When you all see pics of the outside of it, you will know for sure that I am crazy...as if you ever had any doubts. It's sad.

I just want to get it home before it is vandalized any more or some nut case goes in there and sets it on fire. A vacant old house that is just about a mile from it was set on fire not too long ago.

When I saw the title of your post I said, outloud, "Oh, how great!" and then caught myself smiling from ear to ear! LOL

Hey, I would LOVE to do what you are doing. I just don't have the know-how to do it.

Just think of all the projects and planning that you have ahead of you....Kewl! LOL

Don't figure that you're gonna change a lot about the kitchen and I hope you don't. Those cabinets look so neat and so vintage - it would be a shame to try and modernize everything. JMHO!

No. I am keeping the kitchen cabinets...just replacing the counter top. I thought about linoleum, which was common in the day, but saw some formica in a solid color that was trimmed out around the edge with a metal band...also common in the day, and might just use formica and put the band and that would make it look like linoleum. Other cabinets will be the antique ones I already have and will take out the wall between the room with the glassed in pantry and make the kitchen larger. Then it will be about 10 x 20, and put an island in the middle for a work area. I also have a 1949 gas range I will use.

Our 1900 Midwest kitchen counter was a very sturdy matte lineolium type of surface. The edge was metal with a rounded edge on the top and bottom of the edge and a strip of the lineolum running down the length of the middle.

It's going to be beautiful. Hope you keep the dining room light fixture. Love the baseboards, too. That house may look a mess, but it sure has potential. Glad your dream came true.

When I was a kid I hated that metal band around the formica counter in our kitchen. I always had a bruise from hitting my then skinny hip on the corner! LOL. Congratulations on your house.

It's only about 12 miles from here. Plus, the other guy who bought it, paid the moving for it. The owner of the company told us he charged him $28,000 for the house and $13,000 to move it...so he has already received $41,000 for it, and I don't know exactly where the guy wanted it moved to, but it was much farther away than our 12 miles and through several towns. This move should be very easy. It has to go around one town, via a bypass...and through Liverpool, which doesn't even have one traffic light. And that 12 miles, counts the distance around the bypass too.

That's how I go every day and I drive past "my house" every day. (That's how I have kept an eye on it all this time.) It's a very easy route.

The moving company just moved a house over here, about 5 miles from me. We don't have to pay the moving...we just have to pay the guy (who is in prison), or actually, his wife.

Right now we are waiting on the moving company to send a release to the guy's wife, and she has to get her husband to sign it and then we will give them a cashier's check. So, probably will pay for it in about a week.

Linda, I don't have to worry about skinny hips hitting the metal band. My skinny hips were gone about the same time that the linoleum counter tops went out of fashion. ;))
