Help with Meringue

Last night we went out to dinner for our anniversary and had an amazing dessert. I think it was their version of Baked Alaska . . . but what really intrigued me was the meringue. It was unlike anything I had tried before and I'm wondering if they did something unique, or if I have just been having bad meringue all these years. It was heaped up (rounded around the dessert) and the tips were browned . . .so it looked the same, but boy did it taste different.

When I make a lemon meringue pie the top is always fluffiesh (is that a word?) and very light textured. This meringue was so rich and delicious . .. very soft and just filled your mouth. So incredibly rich that it was nothing like the meringue I have ever made.

Any ideas what it could be? I'd love to hear from some experts on meringue. All the recipes I can find have the same general ingredients.
