HELP!! I'm overwhelmed again!))

Talley Sue----I honestly did forget to pick up the 10 things last night and hadn't returned to the computer to receive your message until this morning. So sorry! Not only did yesterday get me off track, but DH got up during the night and made a mess in the kitchen, so sink has dirty dishes and pots and pans piled up which was awaiting me first thing this morning!! He knows that I'm trying to keep order in this house and is also aware that the sink must stay clean, so why did he do this??? Also, I had mentioned to him (bad mistake) that I still needed to do my 15 minutes worth of work last night and his response was, "Please don't!!! You make me crazy whenever you're doing stuff like that. Just relax...." OMG!! So now I know he's not going to support me in this endeavor, which means I have to get tougher on myself and make the most out of my days when he's away. UGH! I also spoke to my best friend on the phone this morning and cancelled our plans for today so that I could get caught up here. She seemed to understand every word, but then mentioned the fact that she'd see me in a few minutes! She and her husband are dropping by because I had ended up with one of her grocery items by mistake. Now knowing the talker she is, I fear being distracted for a period of time and feeling side-tracked once again. Okay, now I'm borrowing trouble, right? So today I feel at loose ends. The dishes are done yet again and sink is clean. That's all so far! Headed for a trash bag and at least pick up what's visible for now.....We'll see what happens next!!

his response was, "Please don't!!! You make me crazy whenever you're doing stuff like that. Just relax...." OMG!!

My DH does that too--he always wanted to sit and linger after dinner, and he used to try to make me do it with him. He wanted the "illusion of leisure," he said.

Made me CRAZY!!!!

I finally had to say to him, "The thing YOU want is destroying totally something that is tremendously necessary to me. I do not value the 'illusion of leisure.' I desperately, desperately NEED the 'reality of industry.'"

I couldn't relax. I was sitting there fidgeting, thinking of all the things I had *planned* to tackle. All my energy was stirred up to *work,* and I couldn't USE it. In fact, my suffering was not JUST that stuff wasn't getting done. It was that the "relaxing" was in fact doing just the OPPOSITE. I was MORE stressed from the "illusion of leisure."

And I just did it, after that.

He has to give in, He has to.

You have to, of course, thoroughly explain to him why this is something that you NEED. This is not a whim, this is not "entertainment." This is a desperate, desperate need. And it is an investment in being ABLE to relax at some OTHER time.

And then just ignore him. Do what you need to do. Relax with him when you can.

Also, when your friend the talker "drops by," you do NOT need to stop for her. You open the door, give her her groceries, and put your hands on whatever thing you were decluttering. Either she'll stand and talk at you while you work, or she'll realize you're busy, and she'll leave.

No matter what, you don't stop for her. This is not a social visit--this is "dropping by to pick something up," and you don't stop your project for any part of this but opening and closing doors (and maybe handing her the grocery item)

Good luck, you can do it! Think of this as a training exercise--like basketball practice or homework.

You're not knocked off course; honest, you're not.

You are just (understandable in the early stages of this) identifying the obstacles, and testing the coping mechanisms.

(w/ your DH, can you say to him, "I will relax when I've done the 15 minutes--how long is that? Surely you can cope w/ me being effective for THAT long. And after then, I'll be ABLE to relax w/ you")

As for the sink, well, one thing to remember: a clean sink is a transient thing. Flylady doesn't intend for us to clean it once and then admire it.

One thing the clean sink is a metaphor for is this: keeping order is like dealing w/ a river. Stuff is always moving. You are simply herding it, clearing the debris out of the way, etc.

My DH is the same way about relaxing so I found I had to change my work schedule to accommadate his "relaxation" ---

Our work schedules are slightly different so those early morning hours -- I spring into action while making his lunch while he is getting ready for work. I start laundry then -- I make the bed -- I plan supper.

Then in the evening, when he wants to sit and relax, I do the mending, I knit, I do bills -- I may sort thru a box of stuff. I don't have to be sitting still to relax -- nor do I have to be running thru the house to accomplish something.

Plan your work so DH has some attention from you and you get what you want -- a clean house.

Yes, I'd check with CA gardening forum too. Also, you sound like you might be in a state of panic. Don't panic...that soil will wait for you to decide what to do! Just make some educated decisions about what you want to plant, then go forward. Posting here is a good start. First decide whether you want permanent plants, or do you want to have annuals which need to be replaced periodically? Boganvillas would probably want more sun than you have, and they get very large. You should think more of ferns, fuchsias, heavenly bamboo, azalea, camellias. I have clivia in full shade, and they have done well for years. Impatiens might be ok there and bloom beautifully.Clivia blooms are orange, but there is a new creamy white variety out at Armstrongs. Be sure to take into consideration the final grown-up size of your plants. If you put in something that grows too big, you'll end up pulling it out and starting over. If you are going to do more gardening, you will probably want to get a copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book. It is very helpful.

Mentally, I'm recovered. LOL. This was really devastating to me, because I'd never had such a bad year, but I think I was just overdue. The good news is that I've totally immersed myself in organic ways and have been taking crash courses. I've learned SO MUCH. (Much of it here from everyone...you all are great!) Add me to the 100 percent organic converts now. I never plan to use another synthetic chemical again. This weekend, I'm planning on building my very first compost pile! Yes I am, and I'm so excited about it. I've used compost, but it was always purchased from the store (Lowes and Wal Mart). And I'm thinking about next year. This year is kind of an experience in learning, and I've learned a lot. I had a good crop of tomatoes (Celebrity, Caspian Pink - love those - and Better Boys), but it's about died out now. Usually, I have a regular crop of tomatoes through the first frost (which isn't until Halloween or so). But the tomatoes I got were good, and I didn't have a lot of splitting for the first time ever. I credit that to the HGTV/DIY shows that said add a handful of lime when planting. My eggplants did really well for awhile, and that was fun. I still think I'll get a few more, but everything seems to be winding down. This is very unusual, but I've been hearing it from others around the area. It's just not been a good year for anyone it seems. My gypsy peppers, bless their hearts, are indestructable. They just smiled through the invasion and kept on doing their thing. Lots of wonderful peppers. Those are so fun to grow...and so prolific. My herbs all did really well and are still going. (Except the coriander, but it always dies in the heat) But my fears on the cukes and honeydews came true and they're near death. I got a good crop of cukes before the cucumber beetles invaded. (And I ended up with both striped AND spotted beetles, with a few squash bugs for extra fun) I'm sure it's wilt from the beetles. My melons were all deformed and I think had scab on them. Poor things. LOL. But I'm just letting them keep growing, just in case. I finally cut the oldest melon open, and inside was a small, deformed melon. It wasn't sweet enough yet, but it was a nice color and tasted fresh and springy anyway. I got about three nice bites. haha. I've not grown a successful melon yet, but I'll keep trying every year. Now I'm about ready to head to my local extension office, get my soil tested and see if they can help me decide what to do with my garden over winter. I'm trying to decide between black plastic (which will supposedly kill pathogens by cooking them, but I'm not sure about bug eggs), and a cover crop such as hairy vetch. I'm leaning towards hairy vetch if I do a cover crop. But I'll ask the ext. agent for his/her thoughts on our area. I don't know if the lacewings ever did their work or not. I had fun sprinkling the little hatchlings, like fairy dust. My neighbors might have had a few laughs watching me, because I did prance and sprinkle. (I thought lacewings were the size of moths in adulthood, but now I read they're tiny little things) Next year, I'm probably going to introduce beneficials early, some nematodes and ladybugs. I had a lot of different bugs this year, but my big problems were the leafhoppers (they're still hopping and sucking) and the cucumber beetles. The other good news, and the reason I went organic this year...the birdies! I haven't had tons of butterflies yet, but man do I have many hummingbirds. I finally bought a little feeder that hangs outside my front window, and they come one after another. I've got at least 6-8 that I've seen in a bunch (a gaggle?). And one in particular likes to dance with me, and with my cats, through the window. It's just amazing. I also have a family of cardinals that I've been feeding safflower seeds, and it's been so fun watching their behavior (dad feeding the wife and kids...looks like they're kissing). And one son is starting to turn red...I call him my birdie boy. The others fly away when I approach, but he stays and lets me talk to him, and cocks his head like a pet bird. My family thinks I've lost my mind. LOL. But they're indulging my bird chatter and my new obsession with a compost pile. So that was the longggggggg answer (sorry). Short answer: garden mostly went to hell, but I've enjoyed the birds and intend to keep learning about organic ways. Thanks, Kitty, for asking. ***

I am so VERY lucky! Renée, the poppers were gone by the end of the 2nd day! I ate them all in 2 sittings, I'm embarrassed to say!! I enjoyed taking the pictures! The kids just cannot understand why I keep getting presents from my "Secret Santa!" [I don't even quite know how they understand the concept of "Secret Santa" (as we're Jewish!), but they do!] The DOROT cookbook is FABULOUS! I keep reading and reading it. It is so rich in stories, the recipes are almost incidental! I truly enjoy the reading and will continue to read and even reread! Renée, again, I am so greatly appreciative of everything! Thank you! Early, quiet morning here and as I read, it takes me right back to the feeling of chaos that seemed to prevail during our remodel. Whole house really -- as of today there is not a room that will not have been "touched" in some way, not including the three level addition that had to be situated just so to "save" two beloved trees on our property. My GC just kept shaking his head at that one -- they are right next to the house and whenever the guys were working they would jokingly say -"Lord, don't throw anything out the windows, you know, you might hit a tree." We began in July, estimated finish date was Nov. -- last install went in 2 DAYS AGO! I spent yesterday madly unpacking boxes, just b/c I wanted to see our stuff again! While we had a fabulous GC, it did not lessen the pressure of making the "right" decision every single day for something. I was here most of the time and saw it all in minute detail, then my beloved DH would come home from work and say, "So, what DID they do today?" and expected a re-hash of each and every thing, wanted an updated timeline on a daily basis, wanted me to enlighten him on what "process" I used for each decision, etc. I finally said, "Look, you and I have talked this to death, I know what is important to you and you are just going to have to TRUST that it will happen." I was so exhausted at the end of every day that it was like re-living it all over again. He finally got it, and I tried hard to give him the Reader's Digest condensed version on a regular basis. I eventually convinced him we were going to be on the "holiday" schedule -- nope, not hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our house; there will be no Christmas office celebration here - unless they don't mind unzipping the plastic wall to view our Charlie Brown tree in the roped off corner of the family room; New Year's is out; Valentine's will be an intimate affair; St. Patty's Day will have to be celebrated next year; April's Fools' - yep we can do that, b/c there have been definite times during this that I have been a complete fool -- embrace it, just don't expect there to be any furniture to sit on; Easter Brunch for the relatives - nope, not happening; Mother's Day - not too sure about that, but we CAN celebrate the fact that the Port-A-Potty has been loaded up and carted away, the dumpster vacated the premises the next day, and the plastic storage POD that has graced our front yard since October has been emptied and removed! All furniture is piled in the front room, but at least it is IN THE HOUSE! A parent of a teammate on my son's lacrosse team asked me last week -- "We had such a great time at that picnic/party at your house at the end of the season last year -- do you think we could do that again?" "Um, let's see," she thinks to herself, "last game May 9th and you would like to do it that afternoon and....have families and sibs of everyone included - hhmm, back yard/field is currently a sea of red clay, boxes and furniture stacked to the ceiling to unpack/organize, but.....bathrooms work, kitchen is functional --- Oh, why not -- let's do it!" Nothing like a deadline to work toward, right? Hang in there -- it is so hard to see the forest for the trees when you are in the midst, but, it is not eternal damnation, although I know it feels that way at times! Hug your husband, partner, kids, pet, neighbor, grocery clerk, mailman -- whoever is willing to lend you a shoulder for a bit. This will eventually end and you will live in it and love in it and cry in it some more and have your life back to "normal".......

My DH was alsi the same way. And I was the same as Talley Sue, not relaxing knowing that there were things to take care of. If DH had a choice, I think he could be one of the grandparents in Willy Wonka, always lying in bed and taking it easy. I, on the other hand, need to be doing something. It's gotten to the point that there are few movies I'll watch at home without doing something else at the same time.

DH tried to get me to relax instead of decluttering. He's learned to just accept that this is what I'm going to be doing.

I also woke up this morning to a pile of dishes in the sink. DD decided to bake a cake in the middle of the night. I made a comment to her that there were dishes left in the sink and she said that she cleaned up the counters. That is a definite improvement and I guess my nagging finally got to her. Funny, how she was proud of herself for cleaning up HER mess but all I could think of was the dishes in my clean sink. Baby steps, I guess.

Well, I'm off now to "sparkle" clean the kitchen and floor.

My husband has an odd habit that I've tried to corral. He puts all the dirty dishes and pots in the sink. I've told him at least 1,000 times, put them in the dishwasher. But it's like he "thinks" he's helping me by piling up the sink.

Mine thinks he's helping by putting the dishes near the sink and further away from the dishwasher. Jannie, at least your DH understands there is a sink.

I don't like being faced with dirty dishes in the sink and even moreso dirty pots and pans because I can't make coffee without emptying the sink first! ACK!! So yes, I'd much rather if he didn't do them himself to leave "whatever" on the counter and I'll deal with it as soon as I have at the very least a sip of coffee.

Oh, and by the way, DH told me today after coming home from work that he really should have done the dishes since it was his mess afterall. LOL! YAY!!! At least he's realizing how much effort I'm making in trying to get the house organized and clean! I'm a happy camper!

Adobe - If you have a percolator or drip coffeemaker you can set it up in the evening, then you just have to plug it in when you get up in the AM,or put it on a timer to be finished by the time you are up :-)

Sure saves me when I'm stumbling around and the dog wants to be fed, etc., etc.

HELP!! I'm overwhelmed again!))
