An update on Mom

We spent the day with Mom.

She's in very serious condition, and has a long road ahead of her. She has now gotten a hole in her small bowel, which is leaking stool into her stomach. The pouch that is draining the abscess has stool in it now. Stool in her stomach is what got her into the hospital in the first place, in November. So that is not good.

She's also developed yeast in her system. An opthamologist is coming in to check her eyes to make sure they aren't affected.

They're talking about removing the ventilator since she's been on it for 8 days now, and installing a trach. This won't be decided for another few days though. A trach is easier on the throat and vocal cords, and they could also turn it off and have her breathe on her own, and then turn it on again when needed.

She is completely unresponsive, still bloated, and she's my Mom. I cry every time I'm with her.

I told Wally to look into a parking pass, and he checked, and they offer $40/week and $70/mth passes. (We're paying $10.50 per day). He bought a monthly pass and the nurse said that was a wise move. So she's going to be there a loooong time.

The nurse did tell us that since she's in the condition she is, with one-on-one nursing, lots of equipment to monitor her, we don't need to be there all the time. She said that when she's out of CCT, in a room, we'd be better appreciated by her, when we can do things for her, get her water, etc. I don't go every day, but a few days per week. Wally took this week off work and stayed at his daughter's. He left to come home the same time we did, and told the nurse he'll probably be back tomorrow. She told him to stay home, get some work done at home, get some rest and take the weekend off. She was extremely nice.....wasn't rude or condescending at all. She knows that we can't do anything for Mom, except be there.

God bless all of you, it's almost more painful to be the viewer than the patient. It's a very sad time for you but please take good care of yourself. Take time out so that you can be well and able when you're really needed. Still praying.

Awww, Kiddo. You folks have sure gone through a lot. I'm sorry. Hopefully the Prayers from your KT friends will help her get better. The poor woman, it seems like she gets 'two steps forward then get knocked three steps back' Hang in there Jasdip and please, please take care of your self.

ok, pills knock her out cold!! at least she is sleeping, but we hate to see her drugged up too.. it is a lose-lose situation. :( Daddy and I are going to try just half dose, see what that does for a day or 2, see how she handles that. But it sure got quiet here all of a sudden. pkramer~ We haven't really looked into it, not for this anyway. I am the main caregiver for her. So it isn't all on daddy. Just very emotional is all. And the eye drops?? shoot- now it 3x a day for 2 different drops and somethng like vasiline to put in her eyes~~ BOTH EYES NOW!! She is going again tomorrow and get another pressure check. Watch it be normal range and back to one drop a day... this is so not fair to her!! Idiot doctors anyway, they don't have a clue of what to do for her eyes. Makes me so pissed I could spit!! But I really can't put all the blame on them for this, daddy waited too long to have anything done for them. At the time it started, she was having operations on her elbow that she shattered, 5 operations in all. So for my mom, these past 2 yrs have not been too good to her, and it looks like it won't get any better. It just isn't fair. If she was a dog/cat, she would be put down, die peacefully and with some diginity. But people? NOOOOO! they have to suffer a long painful life till they die, no diginity, no humanity, no sence, IMO of course. It just isn't fair. Yes, more ranting. The drops situation is what blew me up today. Was down to only one drop per day. Getting her to take them is hard enough w/out doing it 3x. I wish I knew the answer as to my question~~ why? Marjie

Morz8, I think that is what they gave her the night she broke it in ER. It worked better than the morphine they gave her after surgery. She has been getting either percoset or liquid Tylenol IV, which seems to work pretty good during the day. Evenings are typical even without the surgery and meds. It's the dementia that is causing most of that. Marie, thanks for the thought about the drugs not mixing. We have already done that, but thanks. When she had the surgery for her kidney cancer (they did radio frequency ablation twice, but she still has use of half of that kidney, and the other was fine and still works good) she had trouble waking up after wards. Other than waking up a good hour earlier than I usually do, I have been sleeping pretty good. Thanks again for all the prayers! They seem to be working. Tami

Hey buddy, been wondering how things are going. I know you're busy. Best wishes to you all. Keep a level head and remember there's ups and downs. I know you keep your cool.

BTW.... baking things for friends and acquaintances can be very therapeutic. Just thought you'd like to know! :D

Oh, I'm so sorry; I can't imagine how difficult this is for you and your family. The emotion you're feeling is enormous, of course; she's your beloved Mom. Thank you for posting the update, and please do so whenever you can. In addition to so many on this board caring for you, please consider it a place to emote and get it out.

Thanks for the update, although I had hoped for better news. What are they giving her for the yeast issue? I dealt with systemic yeast all of last year.. it is horrible to say the least. The yeast actually might be what caused the holes in the bowels in the first place. Mainstream doctors don't take systemic yeast seriously until it has gone too far.

I'm so sorry to hear that your Mom is still struggling with her health. I was without internet for the past two months and just returned home to CA so I was quite shocked to read of her continuing troubles. I will keep her and your family in my prayers. Take care of yourself.

(((Sherry))) It's hard isn't it especially since all you can do is sit and wait. Your Mom knows and senses you are there and I am sure it is bringing her some comfort. Talking about what you are feeling really does help and know that we are all there with you.

Thanks for the update, Jasdip. Again, your mom seems to be one strong woman to have survived all of this at her age--most would not. That speaks well to a good recovery, though I know it will take a long time. I'm very relieved they were able to transfer her to a better hospital where her care is much improved! When you visit, do you chat with (to) her and read to her? That might be soothing for the both of you. I say a prayer for her, you and Wally every day. Hang in there.
