I am so glad to hear that you are there to speak up for your mom, Sherry, someone needs to do so. You are right, Wally should not be doing it, he could hurt himself or her! Once you are in a position to do so, I would make sure that the administration knows about the uncaring attitude of the attendants. Keep a notebook and make notes that include names, times and dates.

That's weird. I talked to a lady whose mom is in a home and she said her mom walked in and now the home is keeping her in a wheelchair. Her mom pulled the fire alarm when no one would come and help her so they put her in the AZ ward. Makes you wonder how much abuse goes on at these homes. She said the charge is $8,000 a month to Medicare for her mom.
No - your dad should NOT need to shower her. That's ridiculous.

I'm so thankful she's out of danger from the clots and I'm glad they've found where she's losing blood!!

Surely something can be done and the treatment (or lack of) she is getting! That's just SO d@mn wrong!!

I'm so glad she's back where she'll be cared for--hopefully with a bit more compassion than that other place showed her (and Wally). Make sure the doctor knows about them not cleaning well around her bag, so they can watch for any sign of infection.

Hope you can sleep well knowing she's safe from those nasty clots and in a place where help is close by. We're keeping you in our prayers and, of course, our thoughts.

The horrendous care my father received in rehab, along with all the healthcare acquired infections he got, was the reason I took him out and cared for him myself. I am not suggesting this for you, I am a critical care nurse and could do it. Just letting you know that I understand. Hope she starts improving. Oh, and tell that "nurse" she needs to do her job!!! unbelievable.

Even tho' they say they aren't going to be in a hurry to release your mom to rehab, they are under time constraints & it will be quicker than you think. Is the plan for her to go back to this same rehab facility? If not, you/Wally need to be working on where she will be going, considering the options, & visiting the facilities that you believe are viable options. A Case Manager or Social Worker can help you in this regard.

If she is returning to the previous rehab, I would suggest you go, now, & speak to the Nurse Manager about the 2 instances you've sited here. They sound like someone might be shirking their duties & a NM will want to know about this & correct it. The way you explained, it doesn't sound like this was a case of "teaching the family how to care for a patient" which IS often a part of the rehab program. By meeting with the NM now, you'll have a name & a person of authority to contact ~whenever~ something seems amiss. Do not let the situations of "poor care" accumulate... speak to the NM anytime you have an issue or problem. Squeaky wheel & grease, ya know. If the NM is not attentive to your & your mom's needs... find a different facility.

I agree with getting names, dates/times and events. Keep a log. Start from the top, not the bottom. Go to the top of the care home manager/owner. Don't be shy to report this to the government office and let them know you will. Stand up for her rights. I agree if something happened like a fall who is liable? That is a major issue with the care facility - that nurse needs to have her ass hauled in. Don't be shy to mention liability when talking to the care home and the government office. Get that nurse's name. And the care home should have something along the lines of the 'patients rights' while in care - ask for a copy of it. The government office should also have it? Ask them for a copy. Who supervises that nurse? Does your state have any regulations on what the responsibility of the care facility is? Got any lawyer friends? What if your Dad can't visit - does that mean she doesn't get bathed?

Sorry, this gets my goat after being a caregiver for my Mom and keeping an eye on my great aunt in a care facility - both for a number of years. I get royally pissed at these things. I'm not shy to speak up.

Oh my gosh--I'm sitting here reading your post with my heart in my throat. My aunt was in an assisted living facility for the past 2 years (until she died 2 weeks ago). The charge was 'only' $4500/month (EXTREMELY reasonable for that sort of care). Even though it was only assisted living, she was so well cared for. She was incontinent toward the end--and the staff was always on top of keeping her clean. She had a number of medical issues--the staff took excellant care of her medical needs and always kept me informed. She was ALWAYS kept clean, her clothes laundered, even her own furniture was cleaned by the staff when needed. I daily think how lucky we were to find such a good, caring, reasonably priced facility for Aunt to spend her last days. And while I visited frequently, and the staff knew me well, NOT ONCE was I EVER asked to perform personal or other medical care for my aunt--that's the responsibility of those who are trained to do so safely.

Your mom cannot speak for herself these days--she's in too much discomfort, feeling too week, and I can understand her wish to not make waves. BUT you and your stepfather are absolutely right to take on this fight for your mom. I know your health system is drastically different from ours, but you may want to start researching what agency regulates the health system--you've had so much trouble getting decent care for your mom over the past months, I really think you do need to consider the possibility of making a formal complaint at some point in the future. I know right now, you're working day-to-day, but someone needs to step up and demand that these facilities are made to account for the lack of appropriate care your mother has received.

Will continue to keep your family in my thoughts. Hang in there--this sort of thing does teach us how to be strong--stronger than we ever thought we could be, right? You'll do fine.

Wow, that's really bad. I so hope you have another option in a care home and that one should be reported, for sure. It's so hard to have someone present to stand up for the ill family member all the time and you have to walk a fine line between being firm in your expectations of good and humane care, and not ticking off the staff. I used to visit my mother's friend when she lived in these places and I must say none of them was ever negligent as this one seems to be. (Well, except for the one that left her on the toilet for an hour.) Can you complain anonymously? I hope so. And is there the possibility of another hospital? The staff there also don't seem to be up to snuff as they let problems go for so long before finally ordering tests. My sister has had complications from her shattered tibia, requiring her to stay in bed as much as possible., and takes an injection every day to prevent blood clots. Can they give her that? And shoot, they've got to be able to do something about that severe edema! I'll sure be thinking of you and your mom, Jasdip, and praying for you as well.

That just rips my heart out! Is she going to be sent back to that place? I would be there today and file a complaint.
