Soups, Soups and More Soups!
Comments (14)Ok, ladies of the gardens, (and kitchens), let's let it ALL hang out now and go for it! We've worked all spring, summer and fall, and now it's time to talk cooking! And enjoying the fruits, (or veggies) of our labors. Like the rest of you, fall is the time when I love to get in the kitchen and cook, filling the house with wonderful smells. That's one of the reason I love Oklahoma, the change of seasons. Fall just brings with it, a change in the feeling of things as we change from one mode to another. It's time for soups, and stews, and baking breads, pies, muffins and biscuits,( slathered with butter and jam or jelly of choice). Tonight, I'm making, more for DS than me, chicken and biscuits. Only I make the biscuits separate, so they don't get soggy baking in the oven with the liquid part of the concoction. Then, he splits them once done and ladles the chicken "gravy" over all. Of course there are a hundred variations on the theme, and I've tried most all of them at one time or another, but that's what's on the menu tonight. I came across this blog and started reading. Great stuff, you can tell these ladies, (and guy) know their way around a biscuit. The one moniker cracked me up, "Old ladies in Fist Fights". Anyway, they were discussing the pros and cons of biscuit making. I am making mine ala Carol's, by the BIG BATCH, with the exception that I use butter. I keep my batch in the fridge or even freezer to keep the butter cold and fresh. I do mine a little different that those discussed in this blog. I melt a large batch of butter in the microwave, and then cool and put it in the freezer til it's ice cold and solid. Then, I work in the cold butter bits, one half at a time, to coat the self-rising flour mixture, to prevent as much gluten from forming as possible. Everythings done with the lightest touch possible and the least mixing. When the biscuits are patted out and cut, in this case, "Cat Head" biscuits, I dip them in melted butter, and pop them in a preheated 450 degree oven til nice and golden. I always make buttermilk biscuits, buttermilk pancakes, buttermilk cornbread, and as often as possible. Carol's method makes this painless. I suppose we could make many of our standard quick bread mixes this way. Salute Carol! Ladies, start your engines, (I mean ovens)! Comments (14)Wanda, your tureen is different from the OP's tureen. Your's is the more common style, bringing about $300 to possibly $400 if everything is there....the OP's tureen is the round one with the dolphin handles.....very rare....worth well more than $1,000 is in perfect condition....See MorePlease help me decide what to do with this tureen!
Comments (18)Hope you will for sure keep it. I can see using such a piece in a bathroom with rolled washcloths or fingertip towels in it. Or any bath related things. Or flowers, real or faux, or as a cachepot for a plant, especially if it has orange flowers, or just as is. I think things related to the DR don't have to stay there so it could be used in any room in your house. Of course, with orange, green, brown, or beige it will look good on a table as well! Do you have a beige/cream/ecru lace tablecloth? That would look very appropriate for it's time. The underplate is a good size plate that could be used for serving. If you are not sure of the safety of the ceramics just use a paper doily between the plate and the food....See Morecrazy tureen
Comments (21)Yes, it does, but I have never used it. BUT, I carry my digital camera everywhere. I am sometimes hesitant to take pictures of things in stores. When we were remodeling a couple of years ago, DH got tired of having to follow me around to see things, so I started taking photos to show him. One day, I was taking a photo of a light in Lowes and I was told that I could take one! I was livid. I had recently bought some appliances there and out GC bought everything from them for the remodel. I couldn't believe the comment. But, I was told it was "company policy". I will probably be back by GW tomorrow and will take a photo if it is still there. My 11 year old niece is staying with me for awhile and she just loves thrifting. We were in GW earlier in the week and she told me that she loved hats. We found two that afternoon and two of the cutest dresses---suitable for a tea party. She found a pair of black dressy shoes to wear with them and in one TS we were discussing this and the woman at the cash register went over and picked out a nice velvet purse and gave it to her. When we got home, I found a $10 price tag in the purse!!!!!!! Audree got her arm out of a cast today after wearing it for 8 weeks following some surgery. She didn't get to have a birthday party a couple of weeks ago since she was in the cast and couldn't do the things she wanted for a party--skating, bowling, swimming, etc. So, we are going to have a belated tea party. I'll post photos if she doesn't change her mind about the party. The problem is that I don't have a fancy teapot. I guess we will just have to use the china and I can use a regular kettle to fill the cups and then return it to the stove. LOL...See MoreUser
