Trim replacement - real wood or engineered wood?

On my 1936 home, I have original solid fir 1x6 fascia and 1x10 soffits. Due to a poor roofing job in 2001, parts of the fascia have rotted because the drip edge was installed flush with the fascia. To add to the frustration, this weekend I found that the porch roof is leaking inside and rotted the trim from inside (along with part of the header).

Because I would like to preserve the original features of this house, my preference would be to replace the rotted wood with wood. However, I am concerned about long term maintenance. I will be installing gutters under the drip edge, so that should fix the problem with water flowing over the fascia. But in the back of my mind I am concerned that future roofing issues will surface, leading to more replacement.

Has anyone used engineered wood trim on their old house? Did it look like wood when installed? My handyman recommended cladding the trim with aluminum, but I think that would look terrible.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
