Small kitchen remodeling

Finding this site extremly helpful, I come back for advise.

We have expresso ( on the brown side ) cabinets. I want to do granite countertops, Need to do a backsplash and also a porcelaine tile for the floors.

Have seen great glass tiles and also crema marfil tiles and some marble for the backsplash, . Have problemcordinating colors since I believe I should go with a light color counter ( kashmirw white?, imperial white? )

any advise about colors and prices will be greatly appreciated

I agree that with esprsso cabinets I would go light or medium light --take your cabient door wiht you to go countertop shopping, the salespeople there will be able to help

I'm in the midst of making decisions too. My cognac (brownish) Kraftmaid cabinets in a shaker style are installed and the granite is arriving this week. I knew I wanted a light granite and had a hard time finding one. I found the Kashmir White a bit too cold and wanted a bit of cream or tan in my granite. I finally chose one called River Gold which is a bit warmer than the Kashmirs I saw. The River Gold has cream, white, gray, tan, and gold in it. I searched online for a picture of it but didn't find anything like it - the one I chose is whiter than most. I also liked Colonial Cream and River White. River white is on the colder side. Paint really will be fine, if a good quality paint, properly applied. You need a scrub tolerant paint because you will have to wipe it down regularly. It is what I have and had. Have you considered installing tile yourself? So many folks have posted here having DIY and turned out very well. If pre-mounted on mesh it is even easier I believe. I installed glass tile in my bathroom, on the sink wall, using the 2 sided adhesive sheets -- I had to be very careful to get it right the first touch with that adhesive - once the tile touched it, it was stuck! The key is, plan your layout, then take your time! I like the sketch with it all the way across the wall.

@mackdolan we don't need any cabinet alterations. The only cabinets we are removing are with the double ovens. It gets replaced with a slide-in range 1 for 1. Everything else stays the same. We have a box or two of the floor in our garage. The counters we have are pre-fab quartz so technically we could just replace the section where the cooktop is but I hate them so I'd rather replace all of them even at an added expense. I found the backsplash at Lowe's but the idiot owners painted over some of the tiles so unless we can match the paint we'd have to do a new backsplash but luckily those are cheap to do. I don't want to match something I don't even like to being with. The way I see it the biggest expense is the ducting and electrical work. Is it a better idea to sub it out individually or just hire one guy to do it all? @dan1888 I found the quartz but since this kitchen was put in five years ago it doesn't match exactly. It's def pre-fab as we have about five too many seams (since it only comes in 112 x 24 sections) That's a good idea to ask the appliance guys if they can recommend someone to replace it and take out the double ovens. Besides the duct work, DH can do all the things, but for this job, I'd just rather have a professional take care of it esp with the holidays coming.

@Aglitter good point. My only problem is that IKEA is still more affordable when you start pricing out even used cabinets at ReStore or elsewhere. I like the "unfitted approach" (didn't know that was the term!). Although I don't know if it will be considered "good enough" for renters, if I go that route temporarily. @Diana Bier I agree with you. At the moment, I'm not looking to move the major appliances (that's even more money to move the gas line etc.). But you've given me some great ideas if I go through with a more serious remodel in a few years. In fact, I think I could squeeze in a second bathroom where the sink wall is atm, move side walls forward and back walls into the porch are, and have a cute and sizeable galley kitchen. Thanks for the ideas!
