I too would stop it where it is. You have a nice clean line and if you go up one more row I think it breaks that line of vision (if that makes sense!)

Wihout seeing a mockup of it the other way, I would say STOP!

I agree to stop now, unless you decided to go all the way and do around the window and the top of the door frame. Nice tile...like the lines in it. Also like the layout.

Just a thought... since this type of hood is a focal point, and it is very much off center from that small wall, coupled with the tile going all the way to the wall opening at full height really accentuates the off-ness of hood. I would get a SS shelf that lines up with the bottom line of the hood that traverses the space. Making it visually a part of the hood. The shelf only has to be 3" deep or so deeper if you want ... enough to hold wine/oils - this will give weight and balance to the wall. Tile can happily end where it is now. If you do put up a shelf, there will be a
triangle hole on the left where the shelf butts to the angled hood... just fill in with a small piece of tile.
Sketch out the wall with the hood... draw in the shelf with accessories... you'll see the balance coming back.

Funny, I was coming back to suggest tiling up to the ceiling like Malhgold suggested. Her kitchen is a phenomenal example of that. Have you seen it?

Thanks for chiming in, everyone, on where to end the tile. As soon as I posted the pics, I thought I knew that I should stop. But, it is always nice to have confirmation.

Funny you guys should mention the balance. That has been a big issue for me for a long time now. And I have been considering a stainless shelf for that space. The problem with the triangular tile is that I then have the issue of what to do on the opposite side. I am inclined to let the distraction of the shelf and items on it take care of the problem....draw attention away from the little triangle.

The tiles are Pratt & Larson from their Intaglio line. They have been a long time coming. Gardenwebbers have been helping me with my backsplash issues at for at least a year and a half, maybe more. I have had two different counters. The first one was a challenging color, but it failed structurally so I got a new one with a (hopefully) better color. Then there was a long thread on the balance issue. I also has problems with the glazing on these tiles, yet another saga, though I did not share that here.

Suffice it to say, it's been a long road. I am finally coming to the end! Hopefully I will have some finished pics soon.

Sorry guys, it's too late for that! I don't have enough tile to go to the ceiling. And while I like the look in some kitchens, somehow it didn't feel right for mine. I think it might have exacerbated the balance problem and it would have drawn attention to my dreaded soffits!

Next kitchen, I promise! :-)

Don't worry about the small triangle... it is only there to blend the tile to the shelf making it look more built in ... won't be noticed from one side to the next... Good Luck!

My preference would be
1. Remove the hood
2. Tile to the ceiling or to the window/door top
3. Then put the hood back.

Stopping the tile it is gives an incomplete look as though you ran out of tile.
tiling after and around the hood makes it look awkward.

Stop now, and go to step 1.

Pharoah, I've run out of tile.

You might cap it with a stainless steel tile strip.(Not sure what it's called-you use it were your tile ends to give it a clean line) That would fix "not finished look" plus it would give you a nice line carrying through your vent hood.

Well, you can try different solutions - buy more countertop material, use that under the hood (same width as hood to the range). Then fill the rest with your tile (if it hasnt already set).
What i am trying to say is that use of two materials in the hood backsplash will look good, finished and solve the problem of that unfinished line.
You could even use backpainted glass sheet or mosaic work or stainless steel sheet.

I bet you it looks great! Any more pictures? I was able to use 1/2 round, or whatever it's called because mine isn't even with the hood, it ends just below it. So I cound take that pencil 1/2 round thingy and run it all the way across. I imagine yours looks great with just the tile at the end. Not everybody "frames" their tile, as long as it looks "finished". Right?

I was going to find the old posts about "what do do about the hood not being centered" from way back when and post it. I thought it was funny that ideas are starting again. You poor dear!

Not read as snarky. I often get straight to the point (as I see it) and tends to sound harsh but i give it a lot of thought as how i would go about doing something.

Anyway, it will all look nice because the tile you have chosen is gorgeous.

Thanks Pharaoh, and everyone. Prill, I had to go into the big city to get it. Natick Tile Showcase, to be exact. I tried to buy local, but just couldn't manage.

Tonight, I have the feeling that I don't like the color of the counter with the tile. I have read about that initial shock response here so many times. I tell my clients to give it a few days when a new color goes on the walls. Intellectually, I know it will get better when everything is put back together. Right now, I am just tired and kind of sad. Everything was bliss with the last kitchen. Sometimes I feel like nothing has gone right with this one.

Off to a hot bath...
