Annual boy scout garage sale...gives me perspective

My sons' Troop had their annual super-mega-mother-of-all-garage-sales yesterday. They raise over $12K a year on this beast (YES that was tweleve thousand dollars!). The troop works on it from May to August every year. We usually have 3 XL storage units full floor-to-celing with donations, plus stuff dropped off the week it takes to set it all up.

Handling all this stuff for the 6th year in a row has made me really, really re-think possessions. Every year we handle thousands of items that people paid for, took home, used or stored and then no longer wanted. We have useful things like lawn mowers and stupid junk like knick-knacks (LOTS of knick-knacks).

My new perspective after this year is that we never own anything. Life is a stream of items that come through our lives. It's OK to let them go when they are no longer useful. Someone else can benefit from things when we don't want or need them any longer.

Another new perspective is that needs are met. Expect it and it'll be there for you. While sorting stuff I found exactly the tie my son needs for school and exactly the shorts he needs for band. The Universe delivered them straight into my hands - at a time when I didn't have time to run all over town looking for the right things. Isn't that amazing!

Great thoughts. I find that whenever I need someting, it falls in my lap. Well, maybe not my lap. But I find it in someone's garbage or I find a substitute among my own possessions.

When my children were young, I donated a few things to the church nursery. The next time I went in there was a large can of the infant formula I use with a note on it "free." It was just what I needed.

Just last week I went through my son's closet and pulled out a lot of clothes that no longer fit. I dont' have time for a garage sale and wanted to do something good with the clothes. The next day I was reading Craigslist and there was a post looking for boys' clothes in that size for a family that just took in 2 young brothers. I was able to get the clothes to them today and glad to be able to help. :)

Jannie, Exactly! I have kept an on-line house diary for years. Included is a file on notes from the menu for the annual Christmas Eve party that we host along with notes on what worked and what didn't. What is missing is things like you mention. I decided that 2009 would be different as I had DH and DD running all over getting last minute plates, cups, etc only to take inventory in a clearly labeled giant tub and find I had 11 packages of Christmas plates, 10 packages of canapes picks, 150 cups, napkins galore. Every year after Christmas I load up, pack them away then completely forget about it. You would think I would recognize my own patterns. Lesson Learned: Add a Christmas supply inventory to my house diary. As it stands now, I don't have to buy wrapping paper, tags, bows, or paper goods for the rest of my life.

In my ILs' family, we spend Christmas together, so-gifts. But we don't always know one another really well. We try to be personalized, but it's not always something that work. Then one year I opened a gift that was corn holders! I'd apparently said at Thanksgiving that I was nearly out, bcs they break, and I wanted GOOD ones. So one of the cousins ran out and got them for me. It was a HOOT! I felt very loved. I think sometimes people get hung up on the idea that something should be a gift-type gift, and that they have to cost a lot of money. But the gifts I most strongly remember receiving were those corn holders; a package of Pearson's salted nut rolls (can't get them in NY); and a pizza cutter w/ a plastic cover (I'd admired my friend's). Re: cookies-- One year I gave a cousin a loaf of my pumpkin bread. Because he raved about it so much at Thanksgiving. He was the only one who got one, too. It was very definitely a gift I gave to him alone. It may have been edible, but it was about him. However, I agree that if someone is giving cookies to everyone, it really isn't that personal. And mommabird, I do like the idea of "save me the stress!" gifts. I could totally imagine buying you an entire year's supply of toilet paper. (Now that you have room in the garage to put it, right?) Partly bcs then you don't have to remember to buy ig, and partly bcs it would just be funny. Hi outside playing.....no no no, we got rid of the house where I planted the reg twig dogwood. I hope that they are still thriving there, I loved them. We had lived there for 8 years and had finally gotten the landscaping and yard looking great. We are still friends with our old neighbors and apparently the new owners style is a bit "different" (for example a camouflage tire hanging from a tree prominently in the front yard) so who knows what they have done. I was using that as an example of what my husband didn't like no matter how cool it was because it lost its leaves. I may try to sneak one in. I'll try to take a trip to the nursery to talk to the fine folks there and see if they recommend waiting. Beverly - I love that mockup - thanks! I don't know if the perspective off the picture makes it look like there is more space. I don't know that there is enough for a bench, but we could do that little jut out midway down the path for....something. In my walking a neighbor has something similar lined with hedges. Maybe a bit more formal than I would prefer but it looks nice. Ill attach a pic from looking out the front door to see if it gives better perspective to how much space there is kswl - I am in Brookside which is outside of Kansas City. I love Ladue, Brookside has a similar feel to me. brooklynava - I hear ya! I hate our lawn, it looks horrible.This new pic probably shows how bad. The husband is working on it, it isn't going to be fixed overnight unfortunately, no matter how much I would like it to be. justretired - I will definitely add in hostas. Probably around the base of that tree where it is shaded. They are one of my favorites, I love big hosta filled beds. And as a bonus they are very low maintenance! Here is the look out the front. You can see that we do have a large oak by the street and perhaps get a feel for the other trees in the neighborhood. You can also see the area that needs to be fixed on our walkway. We had a big rain yesterday and this is what happens everytime it does.

She thought the style was too boxy to pair with the drexel chair and that it didn't bring in enough of the french curves she knows I like. The more I think about the whole room, I think these are a better pairing for the rustic quasi-elegant look I am shooting for though. I wish I could see it in other fabrics/finishes.. I am having a hard time picturing it in something other than the striped cheetah (BTW Drexel Heritage has a great program to allow you to change the fabrics/finishes.. this is Hickory White though). I also wish I could sit in them.. they are not on the showroom floor. I do know that I want exposed wood on the fireplace chairs-- but other than that, I am all over the place still. More reason to wait on that decision. I am also thinking that I could use the Drexel chair elsewhere-- dining room or bedroom-- but the new CL chair will likely go to one of those spots (or my office).

I once gathered together some unused items for a big white elephant sale they were having at my kids school. I was embarassed, but donated an unused breast pump still in the box (?/!) and went by later to see it stacked in a pile an on sale for $2. I don't know if it sold. All I know is it was perfectly brand new. I had managed to breast feed and wean 2 babies without ever needing it. And I was glad it wasn't in my closet getting in my way anymore. Speaking of Zen, I have two thoughts. There's a Chinese proverb "Everything breaks." And my MIL told me, everytime you throw something out, you never have to think about it again. Tho I do try to recycle and donate when I can.

I would think "every time you throw something out..." would include recycling and donating. It's all out of the way and thats a good thing.

I sometimes check freecycle or Craigslist for anyone looking for things I might have. Surprised to come across a gal actually looking for the ceramic mask faces bought by DD as a gift, never given, left in her closet, still in fancy (dusty) boxes. The gal and I were both thrilled with their new home.

People looking for a dehumidifier, and a big storage type thing to hold balls and bats or hockey sticks etc. Come and get 'em.

My favorite was someone looking for a manual typewriter. She turned out to be a social worker at the same home my parents were in years before. I was so glad to be able to help one of their residents.

Big double bagger for our John Deere rider also went to someone on Freecycle--but I was surprised that time by the people who expected the riding mower to come with it!
