Was just minding my own business like a good girl....coming home from the store, needed a few veggies ( but Wal Mart had Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes on sale for $.50 a can....so I bought all they had)....and there was a sign..."Estate tag sale"....what was I going to do? NOT stop??

It was only about 1/2 an hour until closing so all the "good stuff" was gone....but I picked up 3 old cookbooks.

One done as a fund raiser from the Junior Woman's club in town about 65 years ago....and another from The Woman's club likely from the '30's judging by the ads (Jasper Coal, telephone 102).

What fun....just opening a page...Mrs Billingsly, she died easily 35 years ago:

Pork Tenderloin

Choose a whole thick tenderloin and split open, not quite through. Make a dressing of bread crumbs salt, pepper and butter. Stuff the tenderloin and bind together. Brown the tenderloin in melted butter in a cooker kettle, then bake 2 to 2 1/2 hours using a two radiators.

LOL!! I think it misses something in the translation.

AND A wonderful old red and white checked Better Homes and Gardens cookbook...Dating I believe from the 50's, full of clippings and notes of more recipes. Quite a few for different fruit cakes, including one no bake one with "pet milk" and marshmallows and one called California fruit cake with lots of dates.

I love old cook books, particularly one with notes and clippings in the pages....this will afford me many happy hours of browsing! And so far not one recipe calls for a can of soup nor a box of mix.!

Makes me feel very close to the woman who's book it was.

Oh, I absolutely love old cook books. I drew from my grandmother"s "journal and book" of recipes and expenses (most recipes were just pinches and bits and pieces and eventually translated by family members). After a trip to England and perusing book stores and receiving a much loved gift from my mother I came to admire and seriously respect the efforts and dedication of our mothers, grandmothers and those unstoppable and strong pioneers of our country.-- No boxed mac and cheese; no Kitchenaide mixers; I wish we knew more!

Linda, it sounds like you found some real treasures.
I've always loved old cookbooks and recipe boxes. I used to have good luck finding them at auctions. But sadly, I need to start unloading. Space is a real problem...it's gonna hurt like H$LL!

Tiny seedheads does not sound like true pampas grass, Cortaderia selloana. Young plants of this grass tend not to produce plumes - that happens once the plant is older and often, not until established in the ground. Regardless, true pampas grass is not considered hardy much below zone 7. The attached link shows a juvenile form of this plant. That this is a variegated form is immaterial - young plants of any variety of pampas grass are pretty under-impressive :-) You'll notice just a few tall and generally floppy blades but no sign of any type of seedheads or plumes yet. Can you post a picture of your grass? Perhaps that would help with ID. Here is a link that might be useful:

I am going to try to stick it out but it just looks so different and not comfortable or familiar at all to navigate. I don't know if you will permit me to link a very helpful site, which is http://www.city-data.com/forum/ It started out I believe as more of a location guide ( it has forums for each state and region) and then also has toward the bottom a listing of other forums for all sort of topics (entertainment- the book one is great and use it for all my reading suggestions).........and they also have a house one. There I said it. It won't replace this but it's a very nice useful forum for all sorts of stuff.

I like glazed walls and am definitely an amateur--with a little experience. The easiest method, to me, is start with, for example, a BM pearl finish undercoat, and then take one of the metallic glazes, and cut it with one of the clear glazing mixtures--about 30 to 50 percent. You have to be pretty quick, and agile: have a stool handy. Roll on your glazing mixture top to bottom, and then hop on your stool with a long wallpaper brush--one that is about 30 some inches. In one gesture, move from top to bottom in one fell swoop. Repeat until your legs give out! You should practice on a piece of foam core or something like that to ascertain the percentage of color that you want....because once you start, if you get it wrong, you will see where you have played with the glaze too much--and you'll have to do the whole wall to make it look even. In my experience, metallics are unforgiving about "do-overs". They start to accumulate unevenly...

I have one of those red/white checked ones - as well as my Mom's favorite. Yes - you can tell the important pages by the amount of food splatters on the pages!

I thinks it's even more special that you knew Mrs. Billingsly, who died at least 35 years ago. If you knew she was a good cook, even better!

I have far too many in my collection, but they seem like old friends. I don't often cook from them, but do use them for reference. I always look at estate sales, since you just never know what you're going to find.

It sounds like you had my kind of afternoon, bargain shopping. It was a lovely day, wasn't it?

My husband asked what books I would like to take on our upcoming vacation (the question being--how can one take a vacation when retired? Isn't our entire lives a vacation in retirement?) Anyway. He asked. I went to Amazon and looked around then told him I wanted The Ghirardelli Chocolate Cookbook and a Margaret Truman mystery. His only question was--is a cookbook considered reading material? Yep, I told him, it certainly is!
