Kitchen Refresh BM-Gray Owl painted cabinets bad idea?
Hi All -
I have been reading and learning so much from all of you that I was hoping you would give me some thoughts on a Kitchen Refresh I am kicking around.
Goals: Lighten up the space, replace leaking fixtures, update cost effective materials such as backsplash, light fixtures, door / drawer hardware. Keep appliances (except DW), keep dakota mahogany granite counters (not my favorite but looking to make it work). Need refresh to last 7-10 years until I can pull it all out and really do what I want.
Background: House is a 10 year old farmhouse cape on 6.5 acres in New England. Entire living area is open. House has a very casual relaxed feel which I love. I would say my style is casual traditional with a little glam thrown in for things like light fixtures. It is important to me that the space is in keeping of the house, the property setting, I don't want people to see the kitchen from the front door and say, "huh, that's interesting!"
Thoughts:
1. Paint existing Cabinets a very light neutral gray, so far BM gray owl is in the lead to pick up the larger gray stone "jewels" the counter has in it.
2. Replace sink, leaking faucet, and broken dishwasher.
3.Replace hardware with mixture of bright chrome pulls and glass/crome knobs.
4. Replace backsplash with a Carrara basket weave gray dot mosaic tile
5. Add new lighting above window (this is a task heavy area and current lighting casts many shadows)
6. New lighting above dining table - seriously considering having 2 chandeliers instead of just one. Existing table is being replaced with a longer farmhouse table.
7. Painting wood trim and doors, not the beams - a shade of white.

Comments (35)Boy, I can relate to all of these posts. I have RP in my open floor plan. On the walls that have natural light, it looks OK (not my favorite) but the adjoining family room with the screened porch next to it blocking the light, the walls look like green/yellow mud and I am stressing as to what to do. My trim & cabinets are off-white so i have to stay with the warm greys. I've even tried Sea Salt which looks dull. I'm going for an LRV of 65+ so I'm trying the sample board with the Repose Gray at 75% with the idea of the adjoining kitchen/nook at 100%. We will see. Next I'll try the Gray Owl - OC 52 i think. Beware.......there are two Gray Owls! The Oc 52 is the lighter version. To complicate matters, I have a beautiful silver gray sectional sofa that I'm working with. Comments (12)Yes, with paint, you just need to clean really well, prime and paint. It's stain that requires the old finish be removed. And then you stain, and then you top coat. I haven't used gel stain, but in the other bathroom, I used a stain/polyurethane "one step" product, without stripping the old finish. It doesn't look nearly as nice as a properly stained product. It was almost impossible to get it not streaky. I looked into gel stain for other products, and it looked like the only benefit to it over liquid stain was that it wouldn't run. Not any less prep. And I googled it to see where someone might have told you the opposite. Young House Love painted without stripping. They used a deglosser, I've only ever used TSP to wipe the cabinets down. It's not the same as stripping and sanding. They did some sanding, but only because they used wood putty to fill cracks and holes. (Another reason to paint vs stain, even "stainable" putty never comes out the same colour as the wood, without a lot of trial and error to get the right putty for your stain and your wood.) The Frugal Girl did a lot of sanding, but didn't remove the finish, either, from what I can see. And it wasn't necessary. Since oil paint isn't very popular anymore, and banned in many states. I recommend BM Advance paint for cabinets. I have also used a product called Cabinet Coat, which I really liked. But it's hard to get in my area. The Benny Moore stuff is easier to find. It takes a few days or weeks to get really hard, but once it's cured, it's really tough. Comments (1)Initial thoughts: Slimmer scaled furniture perhaps couch w 2 slim chairs (i.e. wood frame & cushion) in front of the window, leaving empty space where loveseat is. The rug needs to be nearly double the current size. The existing look is very heavy and weighted all to one side, from the large solid couch and loveseat and blocky table, to the dark upholstery next to the medium dark floor. Wait on the paint color until you select furniture. The dark dining set on the darkish floor contribute to the overall heaviness here. Comments (37)I have, and i do really like that color, but it's definitely going to be too dark for the space. I've decided to go with BM White Wisp. It's what I have in my current home, and even though it can lean grey-green or grey-blue, the color is so light that it's not overpowering. I think it will work in every room, which makes having it painted easier. I'm using Chantilly Lace for all the trim. As for the kitchen, I'm strongly leaning towards either Repose or Mindful Gray for the cabinets. I think either will coordinate well with the granite we selected, and I think it will break up the white in the space since we aren't changing the floors. Lori I'm so grateful you jumped in when you did, otherwise I think I would have ended up with a Bunny Gray disaster on my hands!
