Help decorating daughter's room

My daughter is turning 8 and would like to decorate her room in pink and zebra print. I don't want to buy a new bedroom set but I need to have some place to put all her knick knacks (thinking of shelving) and jewelry without spending a lot of money.

My daughter has an iron double bed and a dresser that is an transitional piece which is hard to describe. It is beige that kind of looks modern and distressed at the same time. It also has a faux marble top. I am thinking a leopard print (browns) is probably better than zebra (black and white) since we have the beige dresser. I cannot buy more of the dresser pieces and am not sure how to coordinate additional pieces. I have never painted furniture but that is one idea I had.

To post pictures, you upload your photos to a site like photobucket. Shrink you picture in that site so the photo is not too big. Then, just click on the HTML code and paste it right into your post here in gardenweb. It's really easy!

I'm sure you'll get lots of help here! It's so fun to decorate a little girl's room!

So here goes pictures. This room was the nursery for both son and daughter. The room is about 12x12 and my daughter is getting good a cleaning it up but she does like keeping knick knacks and stuffed animals. She also wants to keep that purple unicorn sticker. She sometimes does like looking like 'punky brewster' so want to keep that to a min.

So what ideas do you have for furniture and incorporating the 'zebra'(or leopard) theme?

A canopy would work as long as it’s a twin. I love that look and kind of forgot to explore that option!!! And I agree, tall bureaus aren’t ideal but unfortunately it’s my only choice in this room. There’s only wall space for one horizontal dresser and she will really need the extra storage of the two lingerie chests since her closet is tiny. All of our furniture throughout our home is anchored to the wall (she’s our 3rd kid), so that will be a given. This won’t be her forever room, so trying to make do for the next five or so years until we either move or build an addition. I absolutely adore those drawer pulls 😍 thank you SO much for the recommendation!

I will like seeing it done - please post a photo - no judgments. If fabric ends up flimsy might be fine with the delicate pinks in the room and could add 'heavy' tassels on the 2 awning corners, or add several all across... you know.... or bead-lengths! now I'm into it. ;)

I'd get the bedding first, then select a pink that works with the bedding. When doing children's rooms, give them the illusion that they are choosing the color. YOU select three or four pinks that you like, then present them to her to pick from. This way you are happy with any of them, and she thinks that she picked it out herself. ;) Paint all the walls in pink, get new wall-to-wall carpeting (it works great in kids' rooms). Then add any and all Barbie accessories that she likes. When she tires of Barbie, just replace the accessories. I did this with my daughter when she was about 5 years old. She wanted purple, and her furniture was white, like your daughter's. My husband said oh no, not purple. My answer was it's her room, let her have what she wants. I think she had Rainbow Brite bedding (!) or some Laura Ashley, but whatever, we did the room in Ben Moore's Lily Lavender and she LOVED it. As she grew, we changed out the bedding but kept the lavender walls. It was only a few years ago, after she moved out that we redid the room completely.

A couple weeks ago I was in Target and I saw some bedding sets that were zebra print (black/white) and also zebra prints (hot pink/black).

Thanks for the pictures. We've found some pictures my daughter likes. The big question I have is how do I use and add to the furniture that I have. I would like to add a bookshelf and maybe a jewelry armoire. But the dresser is not white nor is it a wood finish.

I would leave the dresser as is and use a brown and cream zebra stripe. Have a piece of the fabric cut to the same size as the top of the dresser, hem it or even band it with ribbon, and put it under the glass. You can leave the bed black, as I would do a brown, beige and black color scheme. A bookshelf would be painted in either the brown or black, perhaps with the backs of the shelves painted black. As for the jewelry armoire, you are just going to have to shop for that one.
