New Mailbox

We live in an area that still has to-your-door mail delivery. We have a mailslot in our front door that may be original to the house (1920). Our letter carrier has asked us (very nicely, she's a very nice person) to either install a larger slot or mount a mailbox at the front door. Most of the time she needs to leave our mail outside, between the front door and the screen door, because the slot is about 5 inches wide. It might have worked fine when people only got a couple of business-sized envelopes a day, but not anymore.

I am deeply unimpressed with the letter boxes on sale at the local stores, and I am aware that the box must meet certain USPS regulations. Where would you go to find something the fits the period of your house, but would keep the rain and snow off your catalogs?
