old recipes I've lost ... anyone?

I had a recipe from my Iowa farm grandmother using a 'starter' that was kept going for bread ... maybe called 'friendship bread'? (I don't recall it tasting like sourdough though) & also one for 'ice cream topping' using fruit cocktail & ?? ... you had to add more to it each week & as I remember it may have been fermented? though my grandma NEVER would touch a drop of alcohol!! :) She kept it in a big jar on the shelf-not refrigerated as I recall & good on the top of a bowl of her home-made ice cream!.

She also had vinegar 'mothers' she kept to add to apple juice to make her own vinegar!

She also would only use one big old cracked crockery bowl to make her yeast bread ... said no other bowl would make good bread! My microbiology teacher in college said it probably had some kind of yeast that survived in those crockery cracks that indeed added to the bread quality! She also said bread turned out best when the sun shone (barometric pressure maybe?).

What those farm people knew from 'experience' rather than from education'know how'!
