Thinking of hiring a professional organizer.. couple of questions

Our renovation is over and the unpacking is going extremely slow! I am overwhelmed on how to get the job done and where to put things.

I am thinking of hiring a pro. organizer. Does anyone know generally how much they charge? I think if my husband could take the kids away for a weekend I could probably accomplish a lot on my own and am mulling over going that route vs. hiring someone to come in. I have heard the pros can be quite expensive.

It is not that I am not capable, but I have two kids to attend to and get very little free time and so if I have 1/2 hour it is overwhelming to tackle the job, whereas if I had a whole day or whole weekend I think I could do it.

Any ideas for me? any ever use a professional organizer. I am north of Boston... any names of pros in my area?

Something you may want to consider if you hire a pro to help you......have your husband take the kids. That will allow you to maximize your investment, instead of 'tending' to the children while he/she is there. Trust me, they are going to compete for the attention of the day, and I should think that would be horribly frustrating for everybody.

Exactly, you must get rid of the kids for the whole day. I remember one Saturday, DH took our two daughters to a Yankees baseball game. I knew they would be gone all day, he planned to bring them back after dusk, they would ceretainly fall asleep in the car on the drive home. I zipped around the house, by myself, got evereything sorted, organized, even cleaned. It was a wonderful day for all involved! Hiring a pro to help you is a fantastic plan!

It depends a bit on your situation as well as on you. If your yard is flat, and you're building a flat patio, and you have easy access via a back alley or side yard, I'd say it's an accessible project. If you have to grade the area dramatically, or if there are other complicating factors, you might consider having installers in. There are probably lots other than HD who would be happy to have the work. Consider that you need to: - haul in (or have delivered) tons of sand (we just did a 10 x 12 patio and used more than 20 bags of sand) - haul in the pavers (or have delivered) - rent and haul in (and out) a compacter, which is a large, rude piece of equipment. - if your patio is to be anything other than square, you may need to cut bricks, so rent a cutter - spend a little time fussing with the level and flatness of the ground, then the sand, then the patio, which can be tedious. That's if you don't do the crushed stone layer, which we didn't and which is probably not necessary in your zone either. Here's what I would do if I were you. 1. Do some reading. There are dozens of books that will show you how to do this, in fact the brochures for the paving stone manufacturers have a brief "how to" section. 2. Design your patio. How complicated will it be? Do you have any non-standard features that might reduce the DIY potential or dramatically increase the cost of installers? Investigate the many different types of pavers available - in our area, some of the best ones aren't even available at the box stores! 3. Price your options. A couple of days of your time vs. the price of the installers. Include your time and effort needed to haul in the sand and bricks, as the installers would probably organize delivery or bring them. 4. Know yourself. Do you just want a patio quick and proper, or will you enjoy the patio more if you DIY? How will you feel about imperfections if it is done for you vs. if you DIY? Cheers!

jannie, I've been going over to my friend's home 3-4 mornings a week since mid-Jan. We have stayed with the Flylady zones as a way to keep us focused. The first time through the zones we only decluttered. Items could only go in a give away or throw away catagory. If something could be put away, we did. But if the item didn't have a home, we left it right where it was. I took the give away bags with me daily and dropped them at the thrift store on my way home. Our trash service only charges $1 per extra bag, so it's much easier to pay the few dollars extra than try and make a trip to the dump. They charge $35 per van load. The second month through the zones, we needed a lift, so we did 15 min. of cleaning. Just wiping walls, woodwork and baseboards. Amazing how just that little bit of time on one day really helped. Then we went back to decluttering again. Again, only throw away or give away, but since we had gotten to most closets, many items could be given a home. Even if the "home" is a laundry basket in the family room for toys, everything is finding a home. Now we are on the third round of zones. Again, still decluttering as we go, but now we are able to get her set up on some systems within the zones. Paperwork, laundry, more organizing in the kitchen cabinets. With Flylady's weekly home blessing time, we have focused on the floors. All of those other jobs are just too much for right now, but getting the floors vacuumed and the kitchen floor having a quick once over on a weekly basis really helps. The kids are on Spring break this week, so we haven't been working together while they are home. But, it's zone 4 which is the Master Bedroom, so I just send her some emails reminding her to keep an eye on the piles and at least give the master bathroom and good swipe. We plan on finishing up by the time school is out, so the next round of zones, I will try and help her set up zone cleaning which will work for her. And then our goal is to get the garage done, since it will be warm enough in May to haul stuff in and out of there. Just keep at it. The more stuff that leaves and the more the surfaces are cleared off or have thing away from them the easier it is to just grab a damp cloth and wipe while you are talking on the phone. Gloria

It is always easier to get rid of other people's stuff because you have no attachment to it. I would love to have dominion over other people's stuff, too. But, they will not let you do that. I would make a lousy organizer because of that. I am afraid that I would be much too militant about it. I have to restrain myself so very, very much when I go to my daughter's house. There are four of them in her family and each and every one of them is in hyper accumulation mode. I just do not understand why they want to live in such chaos. There are two working parents and very little time to have a family life. There is too little time to struggle to hang clothes in a closet that is stuffed with obsolete clothing and to try and put away kitchen things in drawers that are overly stuffed with useless and redundant items. Just to hang the winter coat in the foyer closet is an act of strength. Most are old coats and serve no purpose. Or, the food storage containers that are way more numerous than is ever needed. Or, the plastic drink cups that make it hard to put away the real drinking glasses. It is all a matter of juggling and struggling and stacking. Why? And, that stack of over flowing junk mail and paper that is stacked next to the burners of the stove just makes me afraid of a bonfire. Why get magazines that, one year later, are still unwrapped and in the pile that you put them in the day they came? The "baby" is almost five years old and you will still find baby things and a tube of butt paste on the dresser. Don't even get me started on what is in his closet! It makes me faint! The bathroom cabinets are stuffed with expired over the counter meds and for some dammed reason there is bug poison stored under the sink even though there is a young child and NO bugs. why? Confession-----I do try to sneak a bag of garbage out everytime I can. But, for me it is an exercise in fortitude and self restraint every time. I also gather up all the cardboard boxes and such and recycle them. They will let an empty box sit for a very, very long time. Daughter makes sure that the kitchen is clean and in order every evening. They are not dirty, just cluttered. She has spent much her precious time just fighting the overstuffed clutter because she really does straighten and clean. Countertop, sinks and bathrooms are always very clean. If they would only clear the clutter, it would make the operation and physical running of the household so much smoother. It is such a struggle to do anything. And, it does not have to be that way. There is so little time to be a family. Not having to spend so much time fighting and struggling with clutter would maybe leave more time to read a story, or build legos or play a game with the kids. Take four or five chores that, with organization, would take five minutes instead of 25, and you have more time for you, your life and family. That is important when family life is compressed down into the time you arrive home from the commute and the time that you have to go to bed in order to get up early to start it all over again, and that can be valuable time. Clear the clutter and organize. It is really that simple. Sometimes people need someone that they do not have a relationship with to tell them what needs to be told. That would be one advantage that a professional organizer has over me, the mom. I, too , would love to be an organizer of other people's stuff. My dream is to start with my daughter's house. What she needs is a wife/homemaker instead of a "traditional" husband who leaves most up to her. No need to complicate life with a struggle around useless clutter. There is a better way.

I also struggled with trying to figure out how to work with a designer, how to hire a designer, what I should expect to pay, what questions to ask, and just generally how this whole design business works. I went onto the NKBA website and another one that I think was called ASID. Try going on those websites and finding a certified kitchen and bath designer. You can pay for a one time consultation of about 90 minutes for maybe $250. That way you can consult with a professional and try to figure out how much more help you need. Some homeowners only need a few consultations, but other homeowners need a designer to take over the whole project. If you have the initial consultation you might be able to gauge what level of help you need

Before hiring a pro, I would do intense purging first, on my own; then the pro can really help you put it together in an organized way.

i think to do all in combo is the right thing... purge first (not the easiest thing to do, but necessary unless willing to continue on with complete disorganization, resulting in clutter, resulting in stress, resulting in snipey/snarky mom), then have husband to take kids out of house and do a bunch on my own, then have pros come in (and kids out again).

I am going to try this route and the sooner the better!

First thing to do is try to get the toys under control!!!

oh, and two other things: first, thanks for your responses and second, i went to www.napo.net which is the National Assoc. of Professional Organizers website. They have a find a pro section and I was able to find several people in my area who I think would be good, one in particular that I think would be good for my situation (a pair of ladies who apparently each bring a lot, but different attributes to the table).... I will let you know when I hear from them. I am excited to be handling all of this and just hope that I can afford to hire them.

If you can or can't afford them do ask your husband to take the kids out for the day so you can concentrate on the task and not getting a drink for so and so. When ever I was doing something that needed all my attention when my kids were small my husband took them out even for a few hours. You can get so much done that way.

justgotab, i tried to follow the link and something went wrong.... would have loved to have that info ... thanks for trying.

I ended up hiring the pair of ladies I mention above. I really enjoyed my phone conversation with one of the ladies and she seemed very amenable to working within my limited budget.

She and the other woman will come up on Monday for three hours and she says she thinks they can organize my laundry room, desk area and utility/toy walk in closet during this time. It will cost $375. I think it seems fair for two people's time. i will report on what I think after Monday if there is any interest.

I've heard pros range from $65 to $100 per hour depending on where you live, their experience and your needs.

I agree, the kids and hubby need to be somewhere else so you can concentrate and get the most bang for your buck.

I've never used one because I usually find the info I need online. I found a really good organizing website that gives some good instructions on what to do and how to start. www.straighten-up-now.com The stuff under "Start Here" was particularly good.

I emailed the owner under her Contact Me page. She responded with some good FREE tips. She said that she just started the site, so information on particular project areas is "ongoing." I recently signed up for her free newsletter.
