You can't go wrong with either choice since your kitchen is currently neutral. I'm answering assuming your subway tile would be white..... would it be white? ...

I think glass tiles give a more modern/contemporary look, while the subway tiles would give a more vintage/traditional look. (Which do you want?)

The white subways would leave your space more flexible in the future if you want to change your accent color. (Have you always liked blue or is this a current love that may change?)

Also, think about light. If your backsplash was white, it would brighten up the darker area behind the (dark) oven and the darker space between oven and fridge. With that said, white would also contrast and stand out more. You would clearly see the outline of the oven... (I am not saying any of this is good or bad... just giving you something to think about.)

The glass tile has a cool tone to it, and your white square tile has a warm undertone The square tile looks like it will coordinate better with your kitchen; it looks most at home with what you have planed. I also like the hardware you have chosen; it's classic and beautiful!

A striped roman shade would be wonderful, or it looks like you have taupe on your walls? Perhaps a simple taupe and black roman shade? Maybe something like the link that takes you to Pottery Barn, but in black, white and taupe, instead of brown, red, yellow and taupe.

The shades and the rug that I mention don't go together; they are just jumping off points. If you go chevron rug, then maybe a more plain roman shade, if you do a striped roman shade, then a plainer rug would be better.

It's frustrating when projects don't go the way we want them too; you have the right attitude to treat it as a learning experience and move on. Your kitchen looks great; very inviting and clean.

I have glass mosaic in my kitchen. It's a combo of black, white and gray. My countertops are black granite. I love the look. It is, however, contemporary which is what I wanted. The white tiles you show look more like bathroom tiles, not subway tiles. I would stay away from square. If it's only a temporary fix, I'd go with something with a little "punch" like the glass mosaic. You already have so much white in the kitchen as it is.

a)a vote for using basic cool white subway tile .... keep things simple and very affordable! Subway tiles are more rectanglar than the ones that are shown in the photo above ....

b)a vote for basic white paint around the bottom baseboards ....

c)a bright happy fabric for a simple roman blind -- maybe at Ikea?

d)maybe look for one of those pendant lights that can fit right into your current lighting socket .... try one of the big home centers ....

There is no taupe in the room at all. The entire rool is the blue green color.

The glass mosaics also come in mini subway tiles. Your backsplash looks kind of narrow -- maybe too narrow for full sized subway tiles.

My recommendation is the glass mosaic. It will tie the kitchen countertops, appliances and walls together. The white subway tile will be bland - you already have a white floor and cabinets. You can use a glass pendant for lighting - if you can afford it - schonbeck geometrix is a gorgeous line. I often use it for my clients homes. It provides great lighting and comes in many different colors, shapes, and sizes .

Look at the matrix line if you like square. The helix is a real show piece.

I would recommend white baseboards because your floor is white. Black often shows the dust, white the dirt. Window treatment check out smithand noble.com. They have a wonderful selection of fabric and can make any style shade you want. The cost is reasonable and you end up with a custom look.
I am not sure why you want a rug - comfort - looks -or to hide your floor?
If your floor is hard on your feet try a gel mat. If it is for looks - what size do you want and where?

Don't waste your time or money with either if you will be doing a complete remodel in 2-3 years. You'll just have to rip it out and have less money to spend on your final kitchen.

If this is a short-term fix,I would not do the tile OR the glass - I would just leave it painted. I would add a stainless panel behind the stove and call it a day. Tiling the whole wall like that isn't necessary. Lots of folks have painted walls there. Save the money and time now, and use that when you do the whole shebang later.

I think a roman shade would be great on the window. I would hang as an outside mount, and several inches above the window, to break up the strong horizontal line of the soffit. A print in black and white with some curves and movement in the pattern (and perhaps some of the green from the wall color - something close, doesn't have to be exact) would be great. Are you going to make it/have it made?

A pendant light in black or brushed silver would be nice there- something with some curve, again to break up all the strong boxy lines and pick up on the curves of all the handles on the cabinets and appliances.

This could be fun - I like how it picks up the lines of the microwave stainless.

I would paint the toe kicks the color of the cabinets - less choppy, and a taller feel for the base cabinets

I would keep the rug small, in front of the sink if needed. The open light floor helps keep the room feeling brighter and larger.

Did you consider adding some under-cabinet lighting? I think that would be a great addition if you could.

Finally, I wondered how you liked the Rustoleum counter paint? I have looked at that for my kitchen. Any thoughts?

Dont spend any more money other than extra paint and a rug. You will likely change your mind about lighting when you redo.
Yes I would paint the baseboard white, it looks broken up right now.

For lights right now, its wasted money to buy new, you can always check out craigslist or consignment/thrift shops sometimes I see some cool retro hanging lights for just a few dollars and you can paint them.
I wouldnt do a backsplash, put that money in the savings for your major redo, you will just have to rip it out and wreck your drywall later.

The glass mosaic were on clearance for a grand total of $60. They said I could return if I changed my mind so I snatched them up. I have never tiled before so it will be a learning experience for the redo.

Thank you so much for the advice, I will look at the link for the shade and the lighting. If it is something I could reuse in another room later or in the new kitchen I don't mind the investment.

Les - I am happy with the rustoleum product. I was not ready to ripout counters, it was low cost, took 2 afternoons and has held up really well.

avidchef - my dogs eat gel mats, they dont bother rugs. I would like a rug in front of the sink.

I will be ordering the shade. My laundry room window is the same size so I may spend a little more to have something made if I dont find something ready made that I like.

I agree with those voting for neither. Tile is not a 2-3 year investment of money or time. It is "forever". I have to assume you have never removed tile, if you are contemplating putting it in for only 2 years. So far your make over is looking good. Live with it as is. 2 years will go so fast!!
