It sounds like the surgery Barbara Walters had. Look how great she's doing. I've just had stents put in. I do think you'll feel much better and have lots more energy afterwards. It may take a few weeks but the results will surely be noticeable. Lucky you that the arteries are clear. I'll be thinking of you. Let us know when you get close to surgery time so we can be there with you in thoughts and prayers.

Still that sounds like a very large surgery. I don't know anything about it, but do let us know when you go in. What is used for the valve replacement? (The things that can be done today are so amazing!).

A better question for me is why are you having this done?

My mother had a valve replacement and a couple of arteries cleared about 6 years ago. It was not easy but she is glad she had it done--easier breathing, etc. Depending on your age, you need to know that recovery may take awhile and you may get a bit depressed about that. Actually, a little depression is very common and can be treated on a temporary basis. The doctors perform loads of these surgeries so I'm sure you will be fine--just be patient during recuperation. Thank you for your input and good thoughts. I just want to get it over with but don't have a date yet because a particular anesthesiologist is required for the less invasive surgery and the whole procedure is dependent on when he/she is available. I'm bored crazy, but thank goodness for Netflix and crochet!

I am going to have a tissue valve, which is good for about 10 years. The mechanical valve is good for a lifetime but one must take daily coumadin forever with that.

I've been retired since 2005 :-) "Wantoretire_DID" so recuperation time isn't a problem, and I have a wonderful support system. Surgeon said probably 5 days in the hospital, so at least it isn't McSurgery!! The link below explains everything about causes, etc. Yes, it is a very common ailment; seems like everyone knows someone who has had the surgery.

DH had 3x bypass 2 years ago which turned into a nightmare, partly because of his own stubbornness, but that's another story - staph, loose wiring - had to go back in and clean out the staph and rewire, then 6 weeks in 'rehab' 25 miles away, with a wound vac, 3 times a day IV antibiotic and daily heperin shot. When he finally came home, the wound was still a little exposed, so the visiting nurse taught me sterile bandage change, which had to be done until it was completely healed. So, anything less will be a blessing LOL.
