Faux stainless steel film to cover appliances

Have any of you had any experience with this type of stainless film to cover existing appliances? I have a new Kitchen Aid stainless refrigerator (long story of why it's not black like the rest of my appliances) and would like to have all of the appliances match. I just had new granite countertops put in and am still working on kitchen. I am having the island stained and glazed chocolate and a stainless hood over the cooktop. Would really love to know if this is a viable, workable solution. I'm afraid if I put it on and then didn't like it the surface of my appliances would be ruined.

I ordered some stainless film to cover my dishwasher front and stove front to match my new frig. I tried a small section first and I must say , it is not as easy as it looks to apply. But, if you get it on smoothly, it looks very real. I ended up not using it because I decided on new appliances as I was having my kitchen remodeled. I have a 5' x 30" piece (plus a smaller piece where I cut out my practice piece). If this would be enough, email me at acpeyton@aol.com and we can discuss it .

I'm sorry that you haven't had any responses. Maybe you should post in the Kitchen Forum, where someone is more likely to have had experience with that product.

I find that the best way to keep a nice sheen and also to clean the stainless steel is to use WD-40. One should use a very small amount of WD-40 on a soft rag and then to rub it on the stainless in the direction of the grain. Then use a soft dry cloth to remove any excess WD-40 on the stainless surface, while remembering to rub in the same grain direction on the stainless. Greg

You GO, @Kathy Linn! I resolved early-on in our kitchen design to adopt a "no-stainless" policy (more for the looks than the upkeep), and so set out to find an antique, enameled stove (for cleanability in addition to looks) and even went with copper sinks to avoid SS. My first kitchen was all-white when we bought the house, and not really in a good way - laminate countertops and mdf cabinets in addition to white appliances. It was more work keeping the countertops white than the fridge (although the door handle did yellow with time) but I was done with white by the time we moved. For our build I settled on a 1929 Glenwood, restored at a shop outside Boston. It was a splurge but like yours (which is also very handsome) one we'll never need to replace. I'd like to think if consumers start throwing the SS junk back in appliance companies' (and designers') faces and going with restored antiques or otherwise reliable, easy-to-clean appliances with actual color options that we don't have to replace after 5-10 years, maybe they'll stop telling us what we should want and start producing quality again.

I have used the Alsa sheeting to cover up a really scratched fridge from the Sears outlet for a rental property ($1800 stainless fridge down to $600) and also my outdated oven before I remodeled my current kitchen. It is a really good product in that it is actually stainless steel. However, no matter how careful I was in the application, I still ended up with a few bubbles. Maybe someone else has some application tips. It did look pretty good but it is somewhat pricey. I think it came to over $100 to order the film. Your friend may be able to order a premade stainless panel for cheaper? There was a website that had all kinds of surfaces for the front of appliances. See below. I don't know what the prices are but I think it would definitely look more professional than either Alsa or softmetal unless you can do a perfect application. mapletex, you might ask a local fabricator for a quote on getting stainless steel fabricated to fit for your dishwasher and perhaps the microwave trim kit. Here is our dishwasher and trash compactor before the remodel: Here they are after the remodel with their new stainless steel panels: Our trash compactor lost its toe kick before the remodel so it doesn't have one in this picture - it was difficult to find something to use there because it has to move out with the trash compactor drawer. My husband after looking around the hardware store found a black stair tread which he cut down to fill the gap that you see in the picture but I haven't taken a new one since then.

I would buy a small amount and try it on something small and see if you can handle it well. I must say the video makes it look easy. The faux granite looks great, I may try that in the laundry.

Thanks everyone for your opinions and sweet comments. I'm still wondering about it. I think I'd like to see it in person. I think you can order a sample. I have a double oven that is all glass on the face so not sure how I would do that. I wouldn't want to cover that over just make a square hole in the middle so most of it could still be visible. Oh well. I guess it's not that great or it would be more popular! I just don't want to replace my other appliances until they wear out, they are still nice they just don't match the fridge. Exploring options. They aren't the kind that accept panels and are smooth on the fronts.

Fake not faux. Looks like crap on most anything. Only applies well on totally flat panel surfaces. The heat and steam from the DW can loosen it. Won't go over a fridge because of the curves and/or textured surface. Darn near unusable on most real world appliances. Remember, it only has to look good for the 5 minutes of filming that TV spot, and then the poor homeowner is left with the mess to deal with later.

If you check out the reviews on it, they are not all that good. I have a friend that was considering it, and we checked some out on Amazon. There were only 2 reviews, and neither were favorable, so we went to google, for a few more. Most of the ones we found were negative.

(1)Trying to do the super-exact measuring and cutting with something more than a pair of scissors or a box cutter (this stuff is likely thicker than the Contact Paper version of stainless, which I put on a folding TV tray, and my Exacto blade wasn't really great on it),
plus dealing with that tricky oven window ... and the possibility of you not liking it and having to remove whatever residue is left on the appliances.

(2) the eclectic look!

Black and stainless go nicely, IMO. Can't really get a good visual of the glazed chocolate island, yet, but with the additional stainless hood, it will probably make everything fit together just fine!
