I shopping for a range. I was all set to buy a slide in Frigidaire until I measured the oven depth. 15 inches verses the 18 in my current one. I don't think I want to loose that. So I am back to GE's cause theirs are deeper. rtmom2: How do you like your profile now? How deep is the oven meaning if you measure from the back of the usable part of the grate to the front? Any issues with the location of the burners, cleaning the SS, moving the grates for cleaning (they seem very heavy), noise, anything? Anyone else out there: do you have a 18" deep oven in a slide in under 2000.00? I've also looked at the GE cafe--it has so many more bells and whistles on it than we need but it does have a deeper oven. I am so tired of shopping for all this stuff for our remodeled kitchen, now I know why sometimes people settle for something just to make a decision. Thank you. Cindy

Not sure on that one. We bought a DCS that has the burners very close to the grate where the pans sit. The burners are designed to miss the grate and only put the flame between the prongs. Probably sales hype, but we were told by the sales person that the burner was more efficent in transfer of heat this way. Who knows if that is true or not. Has been working fine for us and most things can be cooked at a low to med low setting no problem. May just be the pro range part doing that though. Surface on ours in the spill well is a rough sort of stainless finish. Not the same as the finish the rest of the range has. We've found it very good. Spills, grease splatters and boiling spots clean off really easily with just a damp sponge and a towel dry. Miles ahead for us as well as we used to have a black enamel type finish that did not seem like you could keep clean period. We would clean it and then even if we didn't cook anything dust would settle on it and make it look filthy. Not sure how it would be to have the standard polished type finish in the well the same as the rest of the range, but we are a definite fan of the duller sort of grey rough finish. You could look at open burner ranges and range tops like Blue Star and CC. They are made of cast iron and are very easy to clean, at least in my opinion. But the price on these types of ranges and range tops tends to be a bit on the high end as they are higher end appliances. Phil

Porcelain does not bubble!! If your finish bubbles up then you don't have porcelain. Porcelain is fired at 2000-3000 deg F. The flame temp of a gas burner is probably up in this range. The burner grate does not reach that temp because heat is conducted away from the flame contact area by the rest of the grate and your cook pot. Porcelain like everything else comes in varying qualities and some might chip off or crumble or wear off. In order to form a bubble it would have to become a liquid or at least a semi liquid paste. Porcelain just won't do that. I'm not sure what porcelain would do if it was heated over 3000 deg. You can't get to those kind of temps with an open gas burner. Porcelain coating is expensive and Kitchen aid may be using a cheaper coating. There are some high temp powder coatings that are supposed to be pretty good. But aparently not for direct flame contact.
