burner distance from grate on pro ranges

After looking at a variety of pro-style gas ranges recently (Dacor, Kitchen Aide, Electrolux, Blue Star, Viking) I noticed that in some of these the distance between the grate and the burner is very close. One was only about 1/2 inch away from the burner, if that. Does that allow them to work more efficiently using less gas or what is the reasoning behind having such a small distance? Do the Blue Star ranges need the extra BTU'S because they are so far away from the heat source?

I noticed the drip area on some has a rougher surface on some and smooth on others. Which cleans more easily?
