That's a neat video. I can't imagine riding in one at this time of year. I'll stick with a vehicle with heat.

Don't you know they are COLD!!!! I thought the buggies were supposed to have those triangle reflective signs on back?

janie, sometimes it depends upon their church if they agree to display the signs; it may be a law now, tho, not sure.

Yes, I know how cold a buggy can be! I have an open top piano box buggy and used to drive it around the country roads for fun. My feet would get so cold if it was in the fall, can't imagine what else would freeze if you traveled in one during weather like this. But they do have small buggy heaters now days and always have a nice heavy buggy robe (plus if everyone scrunches together they keep each other warm!).

Enjoyed the video and my puppy did, too! Dottie

That was interesting. I'm sure they are wrapped in beautiful quilts!

Bo & Roxy liked it too.

Neat video, although I shiver to think about them out on the highway after seeing those cars zoom by.

Gosh, this brings back memories. I went to school with the Amish kids in northeast Indiana. Their buggies were not covered. In bad weather they held umbrellas and covered up with wool blankets..

Thanks for the video. No wonder the women wear long dresses, I'll bet it helps to keep their legs warm in the winter.

Neat video. I didn't know you could do that with Photobucket... I'll have to check that out!

Are there Amish in your county, or were these taken in Holmes Co.?

I was standing in my library, shooting the video out my window in Wayne County. We have large communities of Amish in the area.

re: Photobucket and videos, this is the first time I've uploaded a video to photobucket. I esp. wanted to be able to email videos I made on my digital camera, but in order to do that you have to have the files reduced or compressed. So, I downloaded a free trial version of Digital Media Converter. Not sure if it's because of the free trial version or what but I found that videos over 1min. do not email well even after put thru the conversion software. It's $39.95, so I'm still thinking about buying it. Anyhoo, I uploaded a converted video to Photobucket and here again I'm not sure if you need to convert it first or Photobucket does that for you.

Thanks for the info, schoolhouse.

(I looked on the map & have driven through the area, been to the speedway decades ago. I'm guessing that the Amish are less "commercialized" in Wayne County.)

What a contrast, seeing the buggies plodding along and the cars zipping along on the cross street. Thanks.

Oh that brings back memories of driving from Penn State in central PA down through Lancaster. I used to worry about passing bicyclists until I had to pass a row of horse drawn buggies. I can't imagine doing that in winter when the roads are narrowed and visibility low.

I kept thinking I hope they cross that busy traffic ok.

They are quite fearless at times but know their horses well. The big semi-trucks coming up behind your buggy and passing within feet would scare me the most; but again their horses are trained to be "traffic safe" as they call it. There are accidents, though.
