Has anyone had transfusion probs?

My local care team has informed me, first in person a week ago, and today in a letter, that apparently one of my transfusions gave me some bad antibodies in my blood and I should always wear identifying tags in case of an accident. It was probably from my hysterectomy Feb 9, because I have been so doggone sick and blood stats have been very very poor. I did so great after the brain tumor removal. Has anyone else had any experience with this or more information? ( I think it was called Lu-An A or something similar) I'll ask the onc doc tomorrow at my appointment.

I recently tesated positive for Hepatitis C . What a shock! I lead a very clean life, no drinking smoking drugs or extramarital sex. My only vice is knitting! They traced it to a blood transfusion I got in 2001. Back then they didn't screen blood as carefully as they do today.

Dirtyfingernails, I don't know anything about the blood transfusion problem you mentioned. I googled a little but came up with nothing. I hope you can get more information tomorrow. You must be worried.

Jannie, I can imagine that was a shock. You'll be receiving treatment probably, and I hope it goes well.

Ah, Sandy. I still have OS 8.6 functional on a Mac II CI. Still, I don't ever use the machine anymore, because it is soooooo slow! On the other hand, my Power Mac G4 400, is now an "old" machine also, and I have upgraded the OS to vs. 10.2.8, but that's as far as I can go, without a new machine. It is a never ending money pit, but new machines are unavoidable, just to stay connected to the web and email. Even your ISP will not support systems but sooooo old, and if you want things to work well, you are forced to upgrade at some point. I can tell you that you won't need anything more than an iMac, today, to get very adequate capabilities on a Mac. I can also tell you that the price gap between wintel and Mac has all but disppeared, if you compare functionality to funtionality. In fact, at work, I actually had to pay more for a Dell, that did the same job as a Power Mac G5. (smile) If you have an Apple store anywhere near you, it might be worth checking a new machine out. (Or a Fry's superstore, although they won't be able to offer as much help to you, as the Apple store, in looking at what the new machines will do.) Otherwise, my favorite on-line folks are Small Dog. Best support out there.....including Apple. (smile)

My Samsung RFG238 counter-depth FD model is very quiet; a similar RFG237 model has a single (in-the-door) ice maker, not two. Comparable standard-depth models are also available (maybe #298 & #297; I forget). Standard depth models are invariably less than counter depth. Other Samsung FD models had poorly designed pantry door guides; search (below) for threads giving those model numbers, and photos. With Samsung, as with any brand, its smart to verify that authorized service is available in your local area before you buy.

Wow, what a diversion from the original post! However, between all the venom and legal mumbo jumbo, I was reminded of my dear neighbor, "Betty", who recently died. DH and I had yet to move back into our house as it was under construction when Betty passed away. She had been living w/ her "third", "Al", and they weren't married. I found this a little odd for an elderly couple, lol, but never dreamed to question it. Anyway, shortly after Betty died, Al was told "by the kids" (they had no children together) to leave the house for the day. While gone, moving trucks came by and moved out a bunch of stuff. We were horrified, thinking it was Betty's adult children. But, it was Betty's deceased second husband's kids. In his will, the house was left to Betty for as long as she lived. Upon her death, it went to her stepkids who wasted no time giving Al the boot. Al and Betty lived there in harmony for YEARS and we were all very sad to see Al be forced to move across the state to his daughter's place. But, I guess Betty's skids had no real obligation to Al and legally, Betty's hands were tied. Not sure if that's the reason they never married (like the house would have gone to her skids in that event) or not, but it was an odd arrangement. Dana

Yes, I hate to say it, but you're asking way too much IMO for a used rug. They may still be able to get it at C&B for over $1k, but it would be brand new. They could prob. buy something similar at an outlet for $500.... You prob need to drop your price drastically if you want it to sell fast. GL!

I imagine blood matching has improved since my mother had leukemia in the 1970's. She had terrible reactions to each transfusion -- got worse every time. We were told it was because there was no way to *completely* match what she was being given to her own blood, and that got more and more difficult with each new batch of blood.

When DH had his first transfusion he started feeling bad just a few minutes into it, his temp went up almost immediately and he broke out. They stopped the transfusion right away and his room was over run with doctors and nurses. I saw them red tag that blood. They never did explain why the reaction but he's had four since then with out any problems.

DFN ~ I didn't reply to this post yesterday because I had no idea what a probs was. I was thinking it was something technical and I had no information about one.

Yes I have, I contracted serum hepatitis from a blood transfusion. I was 12 with a very serious kidney disease which required me to have many many transfusions. Then I had the additional complication of hepatitis. Despite it all, I survived. I always said in my mind, as sick as I was, I'm getting better every day. I was lucky to be born with the positive attitude gene. I'll be praying that you'll get better and better every day too.

lu an is med-speak for antigens. there is mainly lu an little 'a' subscript and little 'b' subscript but also lots of #'d antigens. obviously they did not mismatch your blood type but the matching of antigens can not be done in emergency situations, that takes some time w/ testing and retesting blood samples. hope you feel better soon ~ liz

My blood count numbers have been really low and I have been trying so hard to avoid having a transfusion. My surgeon told me to avoid it if at all possible.

Keep us posted and I hope you get to feeling good quickly.

I have had 2 transfushions...and no problems so far...sounds like I might though huh? I sure hope nothing ever comes up!! My first was the year Princess Diana passed away and then when I got my hyster. last Feb. I got I think 3 units that time....Hugs to you DF I hate you now have to deal with this....Stacy

I also have had 2 transfusions,one in 1964 after my DD was born and one last year when i had the mastectomy.So far no problems that i know of,thank GOD!!!!!

If you have planned surgery you can usually bank your own blood. I did that before each of my hip replacements. (I was surprised to learn that my blood was just disposed of when I didn't need it -- not given to a bank. Something about it not being tested/typed when drawn.)

I know Jehovah's Witnesses refuse blood transfusions and can be given a substitute to blood in some instances. Several labs are working to improve a volume substitute.
