What's for dinner Saturday?

As the weatherman promised, our cold front is here. It's nice and sunny though, so I'm not complaining.

I made a big pot of ham and bean soup this afternoon and we'll have the leftover coconut tapioca for dessert. We like our bean soup with fresh chopped onions on top and plenty of saltines :-)

What are you having for dinner tonight?

Our cold front here in Ohio came through yesterday and has stuck around for today. But it's a good day for soups of all kinds. Yours sounds very good.

I put salmon on a bed of spinach/arugula, and had a bowl of homemade vegetable soup w/whole wheat crackers. Now if the dishes were just done...........

Hi Patti,
We got dumped on last nite, and this morning DH and I were out shovelling the parking lot, and sidewalk. A neighbour came over to help. I loved it.

Beautiful, sunny day today. Saturday is usually my bread-making day and today was no different. But one loaf is slated to be taken tomorrow to a dinner we are invited to.

A couple weeks out of the blue, I got a call from my ex-brother-in-law. An ex of 30+ years! BIL and his wife have often talked about me, wondered how I was, etc etc.
They have 4 kids, and they remember me as well (they were young.....the one daughter was our flower-girl).
BIL and wife have 12 grandkids (!) who often visit on weekends and their kids of course.

They all want to see me again. Tomorrow we're going for a visit and dinner. My DH is completely cool with the idea. BIL sons are excited, because they play guitar and they now know hubby is a drummer. Future plans for a street party in the summer :D.

So my contribution to dinner (I asked first) is a loaf of my bread. Thankfully they rose beautifully and look gorgeous.

OH this is the dinner thread, isn't it? :D
Hubby is out at his birthday-party gig so I had fried potatoes and 2 fried eggs. I like eating them together.

Rhizo, you eat pretty healthy most of the time and, besides, that hot dog sounds mighty good! Enjoy!! Shirley, you described your weather so well I got chilly :-) But your dinner would warm anyone's tummy. Rob333, your dinner sounds delicious. I tried frying veggies in tempura batter once and the batter all fell off. I don't know if my grease wasn't hot enough or batter too thin. Just remember being sad I didn't get my tempura broccoli!! Your son will be full of adventure stories to tell you and--I don't think kids ever get tired of the snow. Glenda, you'll be cruisin' before you know it. Sorry you didn't get the dinner you wanted, but LJS isn't a sorry second. Terri, it's so unusual to read that you're having leftovers. I wouldn't think you'd have any with all those big, hungry boys around. Glad for you that you did, though. Momma deserves a night off!

..Asking me for a recipe isn't usually something I can help with. But I'll try! And I know that I said orzo but I MEANT coucous! But it sure would work with orzo. Fix 1 cup coucous and 1/2 cup red quinoi according to the directions on their labels. Be sure to rinse the quinoa first, and I prefer the red....it tastes nuttier to me. I cook both of them in chicken broth. This salad can be made just with quinoi, but I didn't want to scare my guests. :-) Veggies....to equal about two cups or more : chopped green onions, red bell pepper, english cuke, chick peas (rinsed and drained), halved cherry tomatoes. Use your favorite vinaigrette . I made a lemon dressing with quarter cup fresh lemon juice, quarter cup olive oil, two cloves minced garlic, chopped fresh oregano, sugar, S & P to taste, and a splash of balsamic or other vineger. I didn't use all of the dressing. Add it to the couscous and quinoi while still warm, cover, and chill. When ready to serve, stir and taste to add more dressing if necessary. I added a bit of lemon zest on top for serving and fresh mint from the garden .

Gosh, everyone's dinner sounds so good! I swear that I'm going to get a slow cooker; I must be one of the few that don't. I'm looking forward to those cool autumn evenings. I sort of miss our little outdoor chiminea....it was enjoyable to sit around a fire and chat over drinks. Jasdip, my eyes are FABULOUS! My vision gets sharper and brighter every day. I asked Robert this evening if he noticed that the TV reception had improved and he just laughed at me. I simply cannot believe that I have this vision out of my own eyes. My doctor somehow managed to finess my new lenses so that I feel like I have almost infinite far vision but still can see well enough close up that I've only needed readers for very small print. I can put on my makeup, read most things without my new little readers. I will donate all of my eye glasses next week. Pretty amazing. I had him, his technician, and myself dabbing our eyes last week at a checkup visit after my second surgery. I made him stop what he was going, I took his hand in mine, leaned close to him and told him how much my new vision meant to me, someone who had really been so burdened by terrible vision since I was a little, tiny girl. I wanted him to know that my life was changed.

Glenda, I've been in restaurants before when the tour bus pulls in. It's a madhouse trying to get everyone's order and food to them in a timely manner. I sure feel sorry for those waitresses/waiters, and hope the get nice tips. Shirley, I need to do that, too. I haven't found a new cleaning service yet, so I'm trying to do just the basics. Enough to keep the health dept. away :-) You had a great-sounding dinner, BTW! Sweet Betsy, do you put beans in your chili? I used to but one day I didn't have any and I never went back to adding them. Orchidllauraga, I just love Stouffer's lasagna. I bought one because I'd heard they were good and swore I'd never make my own again. The LSU/Bama game is probably the game of the year. Sorry, but don't count on LSU winning. Alabama is on like a 5 or 6 year roll! Seagrass, LOL! But that really is a hubby loving meal. I wouldn't mind it myself. Marilyn, beware! We built a huge garage/workshop/man cave when we lived in OT. It took Harry about one week to fill it up until there was no longer room for the car. He even built a loft to hold the spill over. All that stuff had been lurking in the attic. You're nice to fix him his favorites. That happens to be MY favorite, too :-) In fact, that's what I requested every year for my birthday meal (only we call them noodles). Sue, you sure can't beat the price of that meal. I'd sure love a piece of that pie! Kittiemom, I haven't made black bean soup over rice for many years. Don't know why other than the fact my recipe is loaded with bacon. But it's sooo good! Bet it was good! Geez, Mary. You cleaned your house AND made a yummy dinner! You surely will sleep well tonight. Pam, oh boo! I'm sorry your GS's team lost. Glad you weren't cold, though. Patti, that sounds delicious. I didn't get my share of cookout food this summer, darn it! Bengardening, what a fun evening. Hope the evening is a success for the firemen and hope you win some big bucks!! Raven, now you know how to enjoy watching a football game, girl! Those mushrooms sound awesome.

Took me three restaurants to finally end up eating at the third :o(

Chop Suey Inn was my first choice and I wanted their chop suey special. NOT, they quit serving specials on Saturday, so I left.

OK, Brava, for Cuban style pork, etc, but they were packed, so I left!

Finally at 1:30, I would eat just about enything, so I went to the nearby Mexican restaurant and ordered a beef burrito, no beans. Didn't eat the burrito, but ate the meat and sauce. T'was ok!

It's cold here, too after being close to 80 the last two days. Hot soup sounds great and I have plenty of soup in the freezer but DH made a request this morning and he very rarely does that. He said he just feels like taco salad tonight. I usually think of taco salad as a summer meal, definitely not a cold night dinner but since I was out with the ladies last night and will be again tomorrow night, whatever his little heart desires. Besides, it's an easy dinner and I have a lot of baking to do for tomorrow night.

Gadgets, if I'd had a chuck roast in the freezer, we'd be eating beef vegetable soup for dinner. It has to be my very favorite soup. At least you're having a nice salad with yours. We're having crackers :-)

Glenda, what a time you had just getting a meal!! You'd better have a spoonful of PB this evening as a treat for all that trouble.

Jasdip, that's wonderful and I hope you have a wonderful time. I bet you were really surprised when you picked up the phone.Have a great time and report back :-) As for the shoveling, you go for it, girlfriend! I'll stay inside, thank you!

Georgysmom, it really feels cold after being so warm, doesn't it? We had 84 yesterday. You're a good girl to fix what DH wants and I love taco salad. What are you baking for tomorrow night? Sorry, I'm just sooooo nosy!

I am going to start baking about now. Red velvet cupcakes (for the red carpet), A pound cake with lemon curd topping and macaroon cookies for my glucose intolerant friend. If I get to it tomorrow, I might also make some chocolate dipped strawberries. All three are new recipes I want to try. I have a tried and true pound cake recipe from 50 years ago but I just feel like trying something different. The cupcake recipe is a recipe from cupcake wars and they are supposed to be hot. They have 2 tsp. cayenne pepper in them. That sounds like a bit much to me so I'm cutting it back to 1 tsp. The frosting is suppose to be spicy too so we shall see.

Nothing - we all went to Shady Maple (a famous Amish Smorgasboard ) for a midday meal. I had lightly breaded cod, coconut fried shrimp, salmon with dill sauce, green beans, baked lima beans in tomato sauce...and lots more !
Then, went to the Strasbourg Train museum.

Oh golly. I just read the post about dotmom and don't know if i can even bake now. I think I'll have a cosmopolitan, maybe that will boost my spirits. I was going to bring them with me tomorrow night cause I really don't drink unless I have company.

There is a fund raiser at the club tonight but we were out running around all day and got home later than planned so we decided not to go. We went to look at RVs and then to a sports show so we grabbed a pizza on the way home. Not my first choice but I didn't want to cook!

We had a pork roast, slow cooked in home made sauer kraut, with drop dumplings. A build your own salad, Black berry cobbler for desert. And a large cold glass of buttermilk. Spouse had iced tea.

I have such a bad cold I will be eating nothing but chicken noodle soup for the next 3 days I think
