Really weird weather!

It is lighting and thundering to beat the band here but the weird part is it is also snowing!

Here in S.Calif we've been having a rainy,windy day.I have potted plants laying all over the patio,and my wind chimes have been going crazy.Nice day to stay in and cross stitch.

Winter has been starting a little later and lasting a little longer here the last few years. In years past nearly all my trees had broken dormancy by Feb 15th. The past few years my trees have not been breaking dormancy until the first or second week of March. At this point roughly one third of my trees are just starting bud break. My best guess is that some trees will not break dormancy until the end of the month which is really late here. This was another cold winter by Arizona standards with many days 15-25 degrees below normal. Even so I expect to hear that this was one of our hottest winters on record. We heard last year that last summer was the South Wests hotted summer on record. In the fine print the South West had been re-done leaving out California and that day time temps were not included and that they shifted the summer season by three weeks. Anything that needs to be done to get a headline of "The Hottest" or "One of the Hottest" is all that matters to those who produce the data. If there is a way to say it was hot they will no matter how they have to twist and shift the statistics.

Are you guys who have temps in the 70s and are dividing perennials trying to make us jealous? Well, it's working!! It is currently 11 degrees F here, with light snow falling. We've gotten about 10 inches of snow since yesterday afternoon, and that's on top of a smaller storm earlier this week that left things crusty and messy. And another big storm predicted for tomorrow. Yikes. And of course, that's on top of a terrible ice storm a week ago Thursday. Due to a collision/layering (or something meterological) of warm air from the south and cold air from the north, a huge tract of New england had terrible icing. Huge numbers of trees were broken from the ice, which fell on power lines and poles. Most of the wood is laying in piles in people's yards and along the sides of streets. Over a million people were out of power, and there are still some poor souls who don't have power after 8 days. The weather is not cooperating with the cleanup or with people's holiday plans here in the Northeast! One thing you could say with 99.9% probability, it's going to be a white Christmas here.

Wow, I wondered about who was caught in that and how they were doing. I haven't been watching the news the last couple of nights, I hope the rain helped. We had a major fire in 2002 that burned 2 million acres in the Sequoia National Forest called the McNalley Fire and the smoke was incredible at our house for months. It started 3 miles away and as luck was the wind normally blew the opposite direction and stayed that way. The week we moved July 2005 a fire sprang up and we had a tough time getting our vehicles through the clean up, luckily they jumped on that one fast. That was my biggest fear the 13 years we lived up there, fire. I'm not sorry to leave that behind. I also have growth popping from my bulbs in response to the warm weather and think the rain will initiate more. Weird winter weather and everyone in the house has colds.

I live in Washington and I start trees and shrubs in December (the ones that need cold, warmer, cold), hardy perennials in January and February followed by hardy annuals, tender perennials and annuals, in order, ending in April. I wintersow cold hardy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, peas, spinach etc. starting in late February. Although you can direct sow peas, I have to start mine by wintersowing because of the dadgummed birds that love to pull them up. I've been told they use the leaves to line their nests because it creates heat for the eggs as it breaks down. Mostly when you sow depends on your weather and whether you have some way to shelter sprouts in case of a sudden freeze. I just throw some row cover over my jugs and they survive just fine, but they are sheltered from the cold wind.

Our weather is soooooo crazy. One day it's so cold, the next day it's hot. It's always been like that here, though. We have to keep both winter and summer clothes handy because it changes each day. Today, it is warm and muggy... short sleeves or even shorts are fine for today.

Cherbo, here in Ohio, when we have thunder, lightening and snow all at the same time, we say it's gonna snow axle deep to a tall faris wheel! And we are usually right!

We had thunder and hail! I was our walking the dog, when all of a sudden, it started hailing. The dog turned around and gave me a look that said, "come on, stupid - can't you tell this is no place for man nor beast"!

Thunder snow is unusual here too. Just expecting snow tomarrow again. At least it is above 0
Hope it stays south of Minot, as DH has a Dr. appt. Look out Nodak gal it might be headed your way. I will try to wish it more south.

Cool and dry here. 34 degrees so I needed a coat and gloves to go out,but no hat!

Shortly after I started this thread our Internet went out. It continued with the lightning storm quiet awhile and then we had some sleet. I had never seen anything like it. The net was back up this morning. We were afraid it was something that got hit here at home.
