Wood burning heater leaves fine ash dust
Comments (5)I use heavy gloves and place new logs in gently. They are positioned front to back, so this is not hard to do. Another possibility is firebox turbulence when the door is opened. Even if opened slowly there is a rush of air in. While this seems to increase the draft going in, some current eddies might toss a puff or two outside the box. Yet another one is when the unit is shut down and cold. The air intake damper is at the bottom where the air goes in and is routed up and injected at two different places at the top of the box. When the unit is cold and the damper closed there may be a reverse draft that could draw a little air out the, not quite air tight, bottom damper and bring some dust with it. The cold flue could cause the reverse draft, or a bath or kitchen exhaust fan could be the culprit under this condition. Even during cold spells we let the fire burn out at night, so during this time the unit is cooler, and the intake damper is open. Maybe a reverse draft is happening then....See Moreall this dust!! is this how EVERY kitchen remodel is???
Comments (12)No, you're not alone, it is normal, and it will get clean and be your very own kitchen that you've worked so hard on for so long. Not only that, but you're more than halfway there! Take a deep breath, and take it one step at a time. It will be finished. The bright side is not having to live in it while it is being done, even if your temporary home is not completely ideal. (This is not a "we have it worse"... just to let you know I understand... we are in the throes of it, reduced to one room while the workers are out there, two 11 year olds, homeschooled, and a very active baby, while the dust seeps in. Actually, I was hoping that the sheetrock work is the worst of the dust, and sorry to hear that it's not the end of it, but I am now forewarned.) Hang in there, the end is near!...See Moredust...dust... dust everywhere!
Comments (18)I would try to vacuum the worst of it up before your hardwood guys come. Even though they'll generate some dust (but nothing like I expected, they must use newer machines), you want to try to keep the area as dust-free as possible when it's time for the finish to go down. I recently went through this -- I didn't dust beforehand and saw a lot of bubbles and trapped particles in the finish. I called the floor guys back out to screen & poly (and then I dusted/vacuumed before they came), and the new finish is much better. I don't know if I made the difference giving them a much cleaner room to start with, or if they did a much better job cleaning up the dust before putting down poly (or both), but I'd say why take a chance -- get the worst of it off the counters, other surfaces, and maybe you'll improve your changes of getting a good finish on the floors....See MoreAny fave drawer/cabinet handles/pulls for white wood old kitchen?
Comments (1)For some reason bin pulls never called to me either. I used the RH Ephram pull in ORB and SN on white cabinets. Someone once said they didn't have SN at the turn of the century but it is not a dis-similar look to an aged polished nickle. I really like both finishes with the white. I found that different handles I preferred in different finishes (i.e. didn't like in PN but liked in ORB.) I liked that it is very simple but not boring. They are 4 inches center to center. I used Aubrey knobs. http://media.restorationhardware.com/is/image/rhis/prod1080030_HW07?$PD$ Lost of people use these traditional pulls, made by RH and others. http://media.restorationhardware.com/is/image/rhis/prod1278084_HW07?$PD$ Love glass knobs, like (not love) glass pulls. I used glass knobs and PN Ephram pulls on my desk. Just to be a geek, if I had to do it over again I would get a sample of and possible use this reproduction handle. It is 3.5 inches center to center (from screw centers.) I would probably do polished nickel and even consider "aging it" with solution they sell. When it is 'aged' it is not polished but looks more like a pewter but not the rustic design that you see in most pewter styles. I looked high and low for this style - the RN bistro is similar but seems a little more 'designed.' My post tinged with a little regret, clearly :) Hope this helps.
