Getting rid of old appliances?
Comments (7)In my area there are people that go about on trash days looking for things like that for scrap metal. you might ask your neighbors if they know about large item pick ups or if anyone drives around looking for scrap metal. If you are in a gated community you may not have scrappers. For old fridges my power company will take old working ones between 10 and 30 cubic foot. they recycle them and pay you a $50 check....See MoreGetting rid of old paint drips on door frames
Comments (1)I use a sharp wood chisel and slide it parallel to the wood to shave off the drips. Then I sand it if it's obvious. I use the chisel because I like it, not because it's "the correct tool". You can also use the popular 5-in-1 painter's tool, or a flexible putty knife to knock the top of the drip down to where sandpaper can do the rest. If you sharpen the blade part of the 5-in-one they can remove a lot of drips in a hurry. Razor blades are harder to control, but they can work well too....See Morecrossposted to Old Houses -- getting rid of this chimney?
Comments (3)The vents for the gas furnace and water heater are each using a flue in the chimney to vent the byproducts of combustion to above the roof. It is often possible to vent these gases horizontally through the foundation with a fan but you need to ask a plumber to look at your condition. Chimneys rarely support the structure of a house so if you can terminate its use for venting you should be able to tear it down to the foundation but inspect it carefully as you remove it....See MoreHow do you get rid of your old furniture?
Comments (24)"Well, the biggest piece is a 20-year-old Ethan Allen sofa. The fabric was navy in a former life, but is faded & torn now. Conceivably, someone might want it to reupholster. Perhaps I could sell it for cheap then give the money to charity." No offense, but it doesn't sound like an item that many people would want or could use. Reupholstering is pretty pricey anyway so that wouldn't be anyone's bargain. I'd suggest paying to have it removed. As you say, that gives someone some money for doing the labor. And before I get jumped on by those who will say 'beggars can't be choosers' etc, I think that in today's world of mass production when there are a lot of decent items being discarded, charities shouldn't be expected to come haul off decades old, faded and torn heavy furniture. That is a service to you, not the charity. I've called Salvation Army and also a homeless assistance agency here in my town, similar to what has already been described. They have a 'showroom' in which families transitioning from shelters to permanent homes can pick out what they need. Then again I tend to be a serial remodeler, unfortunately. So the stuff I've been discarding is relatively new and although not top of the line, still in pretty good condition. I do have a massive tv armoire that was cheap to begin with and now has the back coming apart, the door hanging etc. I'm going to have my son take that to the trash station when I get ready to replace it; I wouldn't donate it because it is junk.
