Would you like to see this year's piece of miniature art?

It just came today, yay! I'm glad Fed Ex works Fed holidays!

I was lucky enough to be able to go to the Miniature Art Show last month and this is the piece I picked. Our budget was smaller than years past, so I only got to pick one, which was hard!

I couldn't believe this piece wasn't sold when I got there, the show had been open a day already. The artist, Jane Mihalik, is well known to us, we have 2 other pieces that she has painted, one was commissioned and has our old calico cat, Tess, in it. She won Best of Show with a different painting, but this one was my favorite. Even though Woody wasn't there to help pick it out, I was pretty confident that he would approve of it. Over 800 paintings were submitted to the show and a good many of them were sold by day 2.

The painting is about 3.25" square.

We hung it up next to another painting by the same artist, the one with our cat and the girl in the red slicker. I'll probably move it eventually, but at least it's up on the wall away from the terrorist cats!

Woody likes it! He likes it a lot. I've shuffled a couple of pieces around and I'm going to take my favorite cat painting upstairs for a while to make room on the wall for this new one. (Not that cat painting that you see, I call that one the "crabby-apple cat". lol)

I just thought you might like to see it. :)

I like it! Amazing how much detail the artist put in such a small space! Nice frame too. Great collection, Mingo.

I love the first and last stripe! I like the way the line draws your eye up and the last one is simple enough to not compete with the rug or the armoire. the one I picked was tough; there were so many that had your colors in them at Horchow! That one seemed to go more with your rug (which looked red, gold and brown on my monitor!)because it didn't have any green, but in the end I was thinking it had a subtlety that might work. having all of the colors represented is probably your best bet, though- it definitely brings your eye all the way around the room in a nice way. IMHO, you can't make your walls look too tall. Drawing the eye up is almost always a great thing. And I think some height will balance out the weight of the armoire as well. but only you can see how things look in person! clearly you have great taste!

If I were you, I would try to see art in person, before you buy anything - like Zoey B said: at art galleries and so on. You want to know what you like before buying. If something hits you over the head and you absolutely love it, then go for it. If you only feel like you "should" get something because you have wall space to fill, you might want to move on. (Or not, maybe all you want is some color to fill the wall space, and that can be fine, too.) If you do decide that you want "real" art that you like, the rest of Zoey B's comments are applicable for sure. You don't need to buy a painting selling for four figures or more to own "art," for one thing. You can frame post cards or vintage birthday cards, pictures you yourself have taken, etc. What I do think you will want to do is frame your art well and, again like Zoey B says, that can cost money. I wouldn't skimp on framing even so: you might be surprised at how a good framing job can elevate something ordinary into "real" art. We have a small work on paper that cost around $40; we had it matted and framed for quite a bit more than that yet don't regret a single penny spent to do so. That's how good the whole thing looks. I also agree that good art probably won't match your furniture, but there's nothing wrong with finding something you like and moving it from room to room until it does fit, as closely as is possible. Besides, if your taste is relatively consistent, something about the art you buy, whether style or tone, colors, whatever, will probably work with the rest of your decor - even if it's not a perfect match. If you love something that in no way matches, you can get there by the way you frame the piece.

The trees are dull up there-- that's it! What I couldn't articulate.. I've put the chair in my bedroom & really like it in there with the double matted Audubon in there now, Snookums. I'll get another shot. Junco, here is a pic I played around with adding the sconces. I would have to hang the picture to get more height & hopefully more presence. Olychick, hate dogs?!? I do see that the dogs don't have quite the presence that big bird has. Shee, I agree about the tree picture. It's a filler, not statement piece. Thank you Elizabethpa & pattixlynn- I'm glad y'all like them!! Im trying to work with what I have & not buy something just to fill a place. I would like to find something else for the FP, maybe another big Audubon- but having a party next weekend & can't have blank FP. I don't think my sconces will be here in time for the party:(

What piece of art would you love to own?

I would love to have Bathers at Asnieres by Seurat. I first saw it in London when I was in college. My favorite artist is Gustav Klimt, and I saw many of his works years ago in Vienna and more recently at the Neue Gallerie in NYC, and any of his works would please me. We saw an amazing Turner exhibit at the de Young museum in 2015. His mastery of light is incredible. Other favorites are Van Gogh, Monet, and Matisse. I also would not turn down a Tiffany lamp or window! Annie, our tour guide in Arles this fall said van Gogh's yellow house was destroyed in world war 2. Is that not correct? We really enjoyed our time there, and also visited the mental hospital where he lived in St Remy and painted so many of his now famous paintings.

Patti, this one is 3.25" square, not including the frame. Maybe this can put it in perspective for you, in the 4th column from the left, on the bottom, that's a light switch, an ordinary sized single one. And yes, they're crooked a lot because Woody throws chunks of wood into the wood box on the left and all the paintings go wonky. lol Most of the paintings are larger than this new one, a few are smaller. None of them are more than 4.5 x 6.5". The biggest one is the one with the girl in the slicker.

Very nice Flamey. I love your collection. My sister painted some tiny pictures on some glass mushrooms her dh made a few years ago. There wasn't as much detail as your pictures, but she used a toothpick instead of a brush to paint them.

I just want some orange juice, thank you. :)
