Furniture layout for large great room off kitchen

Hi all,
New to Garden Web, but browsing the forum I found many postings with great ideas. We are closing on a house in a few weeks and I'm at a loss of how to make this room work for all the purposes it will serve. The room is quite large, at 28 x 18. Love the brick corner fireplace, but also want to incorporate an entertainment wall unit with a television, as well as a baby grand piano. We have a lot of friends and family that gather at our home, so loved the idea of such a large space, but now don't know what to do with it. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Understand that I cannot determine how large the wall to the left is so my suggestion may or maynot work. I would put a sectional on the right wall (that will allow those sitting at the bar to be included), something large that can seat at least 8. I would put the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace. Looks like that will prevent sunlight glare also. Then I would put two chairs and a table to the right of the fireplace as a coversational area. I think I would put the piano where the sofa is in the pic. If you like real modern you can go with a circular sectional (Macy's has a nice one). I put things in place, sleep on it for a day or longer keep looking and change as needed. Love the acrhitecture of your room you will have a ton of fun decorating. If you like more traditional you can still use a sectional and make the other pieces more tranditional. I usually mix and .match

I would place the baby grand piano first because they have certain requirements for placement and then a number of preferential placements with regard to things like curve toward the primary part of the room, and the issues with the mass of the piano being relatively high off the floor compared to other furnishings.

Then I would place the TV and determine furniture layout from there.

JuniperSt - we moved into a home with a very large great room also - overall size: 29Ã¢ÂÂ² long x 27Ã¢ÂÂ² wide. I actually ended up submitting the space and dimensions to Ballard Designs design team and they came up with a space plan for me with recommended pieces. I did select a couple of their pieces, but mostly wanted the space plan. I thought they did a great job. Instead of the dining table and console I did bookcases along that wall (where the console was suggested) and did two chairs with a table between in front of the bay window. You could submit your space to them and get some ideas that way - it's free! I did find the key to making the space work and be intimate was to define different spaces. This is also a major walk-through, so needed to be mindful of that. Oh, btw, our tv is huge - it needed to be in order to see it from the sectional. It seems odd that all the suggestions have most or all of the seating with its back to the TV and/or the windows. I dunno, but I think I'd put the couch as in your first photo, and add a couple of chairs in that same zone = TV room. Then put a small cluster of chairs at the other end of the room as a conversational grouping (around a table) with the option to look out the windows or enjoy the fireplace.

Thanks for the response! The furniture pictured above is all my grandparents' and has since been moved into storage. The furniture we currently have consists of a large Pottery Barn sectional and a couple apartment sized sofas. When we are ready to furniture shop, I was thinking of buying a large-fish sofa and maybe a backless daybed but it really all depends on where the TV would be.... I'm at a loss! The closed door next to the sofa opens into a rear hallway that accesses a powder room and the basement stairs. The open door on the other side of the sofa opens to the front foyer and staircase to the upstairs. There's a den, dining room, and kitchen on the other side of the house.

Thanks Alyx and palimpsest. Good input from both of you. I think I may be getting ahead of myself with excitement about decorating the new house. Probably best to wait until I'm in the space and go from there, but appreciate the feedback. Can't wait to make it my own and appreciate your ideas on layout.
