1870 house, stone foundation - what about the basement?
Comments (2)Before the mid-20th Century, basements were not looked on as potential living and dry storage places. However, limestone and rubble basements can be converted for such uses from the outside or from the inside. For one approach to inside insulation, waterproofing, see here. Comments (2)Regarding waterproofing the foundation, I recommend installing the Delta-MS membrane. ItâÂÂs the âÂÂGold Standardâ for foundation waterproofing when properly installed with a perimeter or âÂÂFrenchâ drain. No need to worry about foundation cracks after this is installed unless theyâÂÂre structural. There should be many You-Tube videos related to this product. Comments (0)I have 1880 house with stone foundation that is cracking/crumbling and needs to be repaired. We are getting different opinions about what it needs and technique used. One guy wants to chisel/then power wash the mortar out , repoint and then skim coat 2 layers of lime wash to "waterproof" (parge) But it would cover up the stones. Another guy says you don't need to parge the walls with skim coat and he would repoint with deep penetration of mortar, more mortar to really fill space. What is real story as far as what old foundations need for repair. I feel like I'm being sold a used car sometimes. Anyone know of a legit, trustworthy company that knows what they're doing in the Boston, MA area? Thank you!...See MoreIdeas for repurposing an old barn stone foundation, aka cellar hole
Comments (20)1. Ohio? How about a little grove of pot plants. You all are in the business now! 2. A pet cemetery. 3. Bocci court. 4. Grow a whole bunch of one kind of flower in that space with the stone as the border. 5. Fire pit and sit on the wall around the edges. 6. Formal garden - bird bath in the middle, and shade plants on the edges. 7. Grow something soft and make it a place to take a nap. 8. Home base for tag or capture the flag. 9. Two lounge chairs in the middle and plants on the edges. 10. Bury something cool in the ground for someone in the future who wonders what these walls are about and starts to dig....See MoreDebbie Downer
