I've always said: fine design and excellent construction will get me every time -- no matter the period or style. Christopher Peacock contemporary is looking very muck like fine design and excellent construction. I'd say he's got me. (Or, he would have me if only. . . ):-)

It looks more Arts & Crafts to me somehow. Also, that gray-with-a-hint-of blue color on the cabinets is very Martha-Stewart-esque (which I like a lot, but all I'm sayin' is, Martha beat him to it...). Anyway, here's the link.

Sorry. I loved his first kitchens, but this seems to me like The New Restoration Hardware: The Kitchen edition.

I'm sure the workmanship is to die for, but I don't see anything there that other people haven't been doing for a while.

Best-available materials, cleaner lines, no fussy trim details. There's a stolid permanence to all of the deigns that says this will withstand the test of time. Nothing quirky or trendy but the hardware, which could be replaced. Maybe a bit cold...?
I notice that virtually none of the photos on the flash-animated front galleries show the tops of the cabinets, so is there any cornice/crown or not?

I'm uninspired. I'll take a Mick Deguilio kitchen any day of the week vs. this new line.

I wonder if this will be anywhere near as influential as his white Refectory kitchen. It is so simple that the materials and construction tell the entire story, so it's that much harder to reproduce for less money.

As for cornices/crowns on the contemporary collection -- one of the white kitchens shown does not have them; one of the wood kitchen does. Your choice, I suppose.

It does remind me of a slant on Mick Deguilio's Beaux Arts stuff. I don't love all the details (bar chairs for example), but the more colorful and casual environment, and cabinet style with the clean lines and more contemporary feel that still connects with the traditional is way more 'me' than his Scullery style, some of which I might ooh and ah over, but not live in.

Hmmm...it does look expensive, but a little too 'high end' for my tastes. I'm a cottage, not a castle/manor, kind of gal :)

I do like the dove tail construction on the drawers, but I would imagine all expensive cabinetry should have that feature, but I was surprised that he had the two-tiered island. Does this mean these are 'back'?

While all one level is nice, a two level island would allow you to use one material (like butcher block or stone) in the work area and something else in front of the stools. That might be an advantage...especially if you have messy friends/guests...and it would hide some of the kitchen clutter.

Not impressed with the gray kitchen, but I do like the lines of the new cabinetry. Really dislike that each piece of drawer/door hardware has the CP name engraved on the plate.

He obviously recognizes it's time to change it up a bit The white kitchen that launched a gillion white kitchens goes back to the Kips Bay Show House in 2003. Nothing in the "new" look is really that new but it is nice to see some wood and some color.

I guess I didn't get the memo that said that shaker style cabinetry has moved into the realm of Contemporary. There are more imaginative kitchens on this site than on his - both contemporary, transitional and traditional. If I was looking for a KD and portfolios on the internet were my deciding factor he would not get a phone call. I don't get it.

Now him (Mick De Guilio)I would phone. His eye for detail is exquisite. Probably couldn't afford him but a lot of his look could be mimiced/copied for a fraction of the price with some imagination. Interesting where the pulls are placed on the cabinets. There's always so much discussion and angst about that.

I love the cabinetry but am also not sold on that hardware. Dislike the name scrawl. Reminds me of college girls with their school name on their sweatpant butts. Apparently it is all the rage in England and all the big name cabinet people are having their name engraved on the hardware. Doesn't seem like a fad that will be big in the U.S.

Like the man who eschew's the designer shirt: "If I want initials on my pocket, they'll be my own."

I'm sure Peacock's stuff is beautiful but the website is so pretentious I could never tell; can't look at the site long enough to. Now that pic with the blue spot in the middle -- that's pretty cool. Plus, it's located where my grandma used to live ;)

Very wise business decision. There are only so many customers in the old niche, why not branch out? And, this allows use of items that won't fit into the old look, such as the very bold end-grain checkerboard butcherblock.

There was a thread in the last few months that referred to a mag article with Christopher Peacock's own kitchen. I can't find the thread, but here's the Traditional Home article. How typical of his earlier work is his own kitchen, a practical one for his family?

To stay fresh he does need to change things up a bit and I think this is a great option. While I prefer the scullery myself, and plan on working with them on it for our Victorian I do think it's fun to see how he evolves in the design world. The man is very talented. Talking with their designers is heaven in comparison to the idiots I dealt with on the last kitchen!

Its a little detail but I don't care for the raised vertical edges between the pieces of cabinetry. Other than that its okay. I think you could do the "look" for a lot less but it is the detail of whats going on inside the cabinets that elevates them.

Interesting to find a thread about Christopher Peacock. At a home show yesterday, a custom cabinet maker told me about a job that was bid by Peacock for $110,000 - he did it for $38,000. I think that extra $72,000 would come in handy elsewhere - a pool, fully landscaped lawn, trip to Ireland,...

That blue counter, if it's the one I'm recalling, is a material called cottopesto, a kind of artisanal Italian terra cotta.

The Peacock site reminds me vaguely of Johnny Grey kitchens sans the dynamic aspects. Not thrilling, although I do like one island.

I just looked at the site. The engraved pulls are definitely not something I'd go for. However, what stood out most to me was the fact that he has a "Bridal Registry"?! For the Bride and Groom who have everything - why not get them a Peacock Kitchen at 100-200K!

The text is even better -
"Nothing says I love you like a new bathroom, dressing room, kitchen, wine room, and/or mudroom to celebrate your special day"

That kitchen is one that I stared at carefully because, well, it's very me.
Anyhow, as to your question, the owner of that kitchen is an artist and I think that is one of her paintings. I'm fairly certain that there is a sliding glass panel above the La Cornue and in front of the backsplash and it can protect the painting when necessary. Personally, I would never hang a good painting over a stove, but I would never tell an artist what to do with her own painting, either. Not to reopen the debate, of course. ;o)
