Ingredients in the pantry

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm new. I know everyones tastes are different but what would you consider to be "staples" that you keep in your pantry to pull together a different meal each night? For example, I look in one of my cookbooks and I will have all but two ingredients so I can't make the recipe because there really is no sub. for it.

I see all these wonderful dishes that a lot of you put together and I wonder do you shop every day or every other day? I really don't have the time to do that and am trying to figure out how I can accomplish making something new without having to run to the store every day. Another example; having cream or half and half, etc. Those things go bad very quickly. Same with fresh herbs. Thank you for the help.
