I have one Linda, and I hardly use it...first off the apples have to be very firm, or the "core" prongs go right through the apple when you start to crank...

I usually just grab a few bowels a paring knife, sit and go for it...

I really wanted one of those at one time and researched them quite a bit. When I do get one I'm going to get this one.

I have the "back to basics" peeler and love it! It makes quick work of a pile of apples!

Have one, love it!!! We use ours all the time. Kids will even peel potatoes with it when it's their turn to do that chore when we needs lots done. I see that you picked out the one with the suction cup base. Thats a good one, don't get the one that C-clamps onto the counter top. My friend ended up wrecking a section of counter when trying to get it to stay tight.

I have the Norpro Apple Master that I used once, (well tried to use, I don't have anywhere to use the suction base). I just peel them by hand.

If anyone wants it I would be glad to send it to you. It's been sitting in the box on the shelf.

I have an old one (clamp style).
I agree about getting a suction one. We put a board underneath to protect the counter and keep it tighter.

But, I love the speed. I wish I could disable the slicer part on mine so I could just peel and core. The slices are a little thin for my liking.
When it dies, I WILL replace it!!
I peel slowly by hand.

Linda, Do you have a tile countertop with smaller tiles or am I thinking of someone else's kitchen? I have 4x4 tiles and can't use it. If you have a flat surface somewhere it will work.

No need to pay for postage. I would rather give the things I can't use to someone who can. I really don't need it. It has just been sitting on the shelf.

I have an area near the sink of formica as well as the other area near the ovens, cook top and grill with the small tiles.

It works fine on formica! I use it all the time, for apples, potatoes. Just wet the bottom of the suction cup a little bit beforehand.

Used one in camp for a project and the kids loved it! All 300 of them :)

I have the one that Tracey speaks of. I have never had a problem with it. The suction cup will come up every now and then but all in all it works just fine.

LindaC: I would use Bowls. I don't think they would have a good taste using Bowels.

What's wrong with a good sharp paring knife. Just as fast as the peelers, in my opinion. Yes, I do have an apple peeler....

I was looking at the same option. I've used those crank machines before, and they do make short work of an apple.

I find, however, that a sharp peeler, a knife, and either a grapefruit spoon or a mellon baller to scoop the core out of the apple halves works wonders.

To dice the apples I'm going to use my Boener V slicer with the julienning attachment.

Oh see it takes me two times..and LOU to pop me in the nose..

I've had an apple peeler/corer machine for about 35 years and I may have used it twice.... but I'm only sure about the once. All I remember was the mess I had to clean up afterwards from the spatter.... everywhere. It still takes up room in the cabinet over the 'fridge... but I don't know why.

I have the same one as Tracey, works well on Formica. I've done a lot of apples with it and have learned they need to be fresh and evenly shaped. A couple of years ago I got a good deal on odd shaped apples....had to peel them all by hand and it took forever compared with the way I can zip thru them with the crank peeler.

I don't use it for applesauce though...those I just quarter and cook a bit to soften then use my food mill which spits out the seeds and peels on one end and the sauce goes down into a bowl.

And it was on my door step when I got home today!! I can't wait to try it out....glanced briefly at it and I can't figure out how it slices apples....but it says it does!
I am going out tonight and have no apples in the house but for those aforementioned Delicious and Iw ouldn't want to waste the effort!
Tomorrow will be pie day or preserves day or crisp day or....or...

Hey Linda....have fun! You'll be surprised at how fast it works. The slicing is done in a spiral, I take the apple off and slice it in half long ways, then you have all the slices.

Just remember...fresh apples, I learned the hard way.

Marigene, fast with a hand peeler? or godforbid a knife??? You have to have grown up peeling with a knife, which I didn't since neither my mother nor my grandmother did (and I'm in my 60s) to have hand fluency with one. I would be into 2008 if I was using a knife - incl some time for my hand to heal from a good cut. And yes, I have good knives.

I have one of those peelers; we used it last year and my only complaint was that it seemed to like a certain size apple best. I guess using supermarket standards would be ideal but I got my apples from a farmers' market and they had 'various' shapes.

Well, I grew up peeling apples. We had 2 apple trees in the back yard and very very few of them ever went to waste. Many were made into sauce, but many more went into pies, cobblers and crisps.
And I will tell you I will match anyone knife to peeler with this....it's really fast! I peeled and sliced 2 apples just for fun....and to see how it works....and my! Does it fly! Anyone who thinks they can peel and slice an apple just as fast with a knife doesn't know how to use the peeler!

Anyone ever use one for potatoes? I had this wild idea of peeling and coring a potato, stuffing the center with a crumb, cheese onion mix, wrapping in foil and baking.

I've done that with potatoes - Yum. Bake a bit longer (just a few minutes). Delish.

I also dropped the cores in boiling water, half cooked them, and froze them for dropping into casseroles and stews.

Enjoy. My peeler has died, but the DH knows I want one for Christmas. He's a good guy, and always gets me what I want.
