Cape Cod- Should I Remove Awnings?
Comments (5)What type of window coverings are on these windows? It would be simple to layer, such as: any type of shade (pleated, cellular, roller) under an existing curtain (sheer, opaque), and raise and lower the shade as needed to modify the sun/heat. These shades can be custom, or cut to size at the local box store. My last 3 homes had west facing great rooms, and this was my solution. Plus, just my personal opinion, I don't care for awnings. Overall, I think the cost will equalize, in any event....See MoreProblems with HVAC in 1958 Cape Cod
Comments (26)"Generally, I am being told that my oil furnace is probably at the end of its life, being at least approx. 25 years old and should consider replacing now. The 2nd contractor that wants to replace existing with 4 ton furnace, states that the current one is not large enough to handle the size of the house. The rest, so far, want to add a separate system for upstairs." ----------- When the cooling A-Coil is set directly on top of the furnace the huge oil furnace heat/exchanger causes a lot of restricted back-pressure leading to a big drop in static pressure which reduces the velocity of airflow. That along with possibly improper duct design & return air filter areas would greatly reduce airflow. I am betting a 60K would heat your hone in that climate. Comments (3)A pic would be helpful. You can float a bed in the middle of the room...nothing says it has to be up against a wall. Do something with the space behind the bed to parse the room up into different areas....maybe a reading area, or dressing area, or put a desk behind the bed where they can share a lamp. Or maybe hang a drape from the ceiling to define a different area behind the bed....See MoreDesigning a Cape Cod style home
Comments (71)Thanks ILoveRed; did you ever build that wonderful house? The forum seems to have taken a turn for the worse when members were allowed to advertise their commercial status. Remember when business use of the forum would have cost you your membership and put a picture of the tea cups ride on your screen? Did you know the PRO badge turns green when you've filled out all of your profile and have 3 reviews, etc.? You get rewards for supporting the new business model. Of course, in the old days the contractors hated architects and that seems to be coming back. MightyAnvil got kicked around a bit but Renovator 8 didn't. Its odd that Corbu2 wasn't pegged as an architect. Rita, thanks for paying attention; I appreciate it. The historic architecture of Edgartown looks wild and crazy compared to Nantucket, however, the variety of architecture on the Vineyard is impressive. I took some French friends through the historic district and it felt like a final exam in architectural history. Of course, they didn't think the 1700's were very old. Unfortunately, the very early buildings have been lost. Vacation houses arrived in the 20's. Ahearn's favorite style is the Shingle Style and its the most eclectic style of all, allowing much room for personal expression and he makes good use of it. I found Kevin's house at 8 Chambers Way, Edgartown. I hope he comes back to claim it someday. $950,000...See Morepatty_cakes
