Comments (24)We have a 70/30 double-bowl sink and love it! Yes, we also have a prep sink. But, when there are several of us working in the kitchen, it's great to have multiple Prep Zones w/water access. This is how ours is setup & functions...and it works great for us... Note: We frequently have more than one person prepping & cooking in our kitchen. Configuration: Left side, large bowl/right side small bowl GD on large (left) bowl DW on the right Workflow when using the main sink for cleanup and/or secondary prep zone: Cleaning up: Soak utensils on small bowl, then put lots of dripping utensils in DW [nice to have right next to DW to reduce dripping on the floor!] Scrape/soak/rinse dishes in large bowl...and need GD for that...and then put in DW (while the utensils are still soaking) [not nearly as much dripping!] Set-aside dishes that are to be hand-washed until DW is loaded & running and then wash in small bowl & rinse in large bowl Use small bowl of soapy water to wipe down counters Prepping (secondary): Peel potatoes/cukes/etc. into large bowl w/GD Rinse veggies/fruit in large bowl Toss utensils and dirty tools into small bowl Plenty of room for hands + veggies in large bowl If dishes/pans don't fit in the sink b/c it's already full, then you can stack dirty dishes/pans on DW side and continue to work on opposite side for prepping w/the GD still available for use. If both cleaning up & lots of prepping going on, then can prep in prep sink, prep in main sink, and cleanup in main sink...and each person has their own bowl! In our case, it's nice to have the Prep Sink b/c it's in the Prep & Cooking Zones and those Zones (and prep sink) are completely separated from the Cleanup Zone so someone can be cleaning up while someone else is prepping/cooking...each with their own floor space & counterspace......that happens all the time in our home! The Prep Sink "makes" our kitchen for general functionality; the ability to use the main sink for prepping or cleaning up or both at one time makes it even better! It's all in how you work in your kitchen & use your various fixtures, etc. Everyone is different, despite what some want you to think, there's no "right" or "wrong" way...just what's right for you!...See MoreDouble basin sink & garbage disposal placement
Comments (8)Thanks everybody, this is part of a major home renovation project and we've had some issues with our GC but reading through some of the nightmares other people have experienced, I guess we're pretty lucky. We've had a few major (and many minor) glitches, and many things were not done as specified, but the GC has generally addressed our concerns quickly and most things have been re-done to be the right way. (And when they haven't, he's been careful to explain why something was not, or could not be, done as specified.) We just wish they had been done right the first time--it can't be very cost-effective for him to keep having his subcontractors and workers doing things over. He's fairly young and relatively new to the business (and gave us the lowest bid) so we knew we were taking a chance on him--fortunately our neighbors AND architect have had him do major projects and he came highly recommended. The biggest and most frustrating problems have mostly involved the A/C and we're still not entirely happy with how that turned out, but it's too late to move the AHU (its location was one of the issues, and one of our biggest regrets because of the domino effect it had on so many other elements of the project, as well as the incredibly sloppy work the A/C subcontractor did). BTW the kitchen is done except for grouting the backsplash tiles!!!! I'll post some pics this weekend....See MoreOld, Deep Cast Iron Sink or New Sink? I can't decide
Comments (20)Thank you My3dogs (this is my first post here so I am not sure if you will know I am replying to you.....the last time I looked at GardenWeb it was not part of Houzz...) I ADORE the Danby marble in my original post picture with the vintage sink. And I am not a 100% sold on Quartz/Quartzite but my concern is we have soapstone now and I am not pleased with it. A guest comes over and sets a casserole dish down and then pulls it out and it scratches. My "hard on equipment" husband unloads the dishwasher and drags a dish by the edge and it dings. I did like a white granite and thought it may be more durable than the soapstone but then researched the quartz or caesar stone and it seems bulletproof. The 'carrera" caesar stones look very marblesque. But I do love the look and feel of marble and so many on this forum have said it is NOT that hard to care for. Another dilemma! I believe I will have my husband make me a ply wood counter as funkycamper suggests....to try out the sink. I also need to research the faucets and get the sink resurfaced if I do decide on it (and I think I will always be sad if I don't..)...See MoreI can't find the dish drainer, what did you do with it?
Comments (77)Yes, all our recycling has to be clean, and because containers have a tendency to "nest" in the recycling bin, I need the stuff dry before I throw it in there, to avoid mold etc, as recycling is only picked up every two weeks. We recycle and compost more than we trash these days. Good, but requires more logistical organization than the old kitchen provided. I don't think you can underestimate the amount of yogurt three girls go through :-) beth09 I saw it at BB&B, but ended up buying it at Homesense for $30 CDN. It does pay to shop around - I got my kitchen sink half price on Amazon during a flash sale! sjhockeyfan - thanks for the tip - true we do use powdered detergent hmmm.......See Morecolumbusguy1
