Am I losing my mind? Search function? Virginia mist

I periodically do a search for my honed Virginia mist pics because I frequently get questions that scroll off the front page.

I just posted a long 6 month follow up evaluation based on a question I saw in the thread from the search function. The post is not showing up in the front page (after numerous refreshes) AND I now it doesn't even show up in the search.

Anyway. I still love my granite and it give it an "A". I've only sealed it once in six months and it is probably due for another coat. If I use a magnifying glass, in bright light, at a certain angle I notice some eraser type marks and very mild pitting.

I did a search and found a post where you put photos of your pretty counters but I did not see a follow up that you put in today.

I just googled honed virginia mist and the thread, with today's post, showed up as the first result. Too weird.

Now comes some tidbits from a Floridian! First, Rexes do not thrive in FL. They are grown in temp controlled greenhouses with swamp coolers, which is why you see them for sale. Although it may feel muggy if you are in one, the temp is lowered during the day and cooled at night - relatively. There are newer rex/rhizo hybrids I am growing with success, but pure rexes never make it in our hot, wet summers. It is truly the hot nights that kill them. 80F lows are not uncommon. In habitat, rexes see 68-70F at night. Secondly, whomever started this thread is growing in soil that is way too heavy. I use Fafard #2 with additional perlite and pine bark added. I also keep my begonias barely potted up - like a few inches larger when they need it. That ensures the soil does not stay wet, which kills begonias. If you struggle to pick up a bag of soil, it is too heavy. I have five foot canes in 3 gallon pots. I can easily pick up a 3 gallon cane with one hand - that is what they prefer. Patricia- your story made my day! Sounds like something my father would do. I would love to wait on paint, but DH is insisting we do it before the new floor is in, which is happening well before the furniture is moved. *sigh* I guess he will learn about that part of decorating if we have to repaint because our color pick looks horrible with our furniture. anele- I was thinking about a creamy color I suppose, though I am so tired of living in a vanilla rental box. The biggest problem I'm running into with the couch is that many tones (even some non-neutrals) are making the couch appear yellow. So I'm still playing around with it. The other issue is that whatever color we pick for the living room will need to go down the hall (see my flooring x-post in this forum for a few pics) since there isn't a good place to transition the color. I will probably make yet another thread about paint after I take some good pictures tomorrow. holly-kay: I think I'm going to sneak the cow in and put her in the office with some fun, bright curtains! I think DH will let me get away with a little more in there :)

Hi Kercove, The slabs of granite are from the Granite Depot in Westborough Ma. I worked with Paula. A wonderful place. They moved so many slabs until I found the ones I liked. She even held a bunch just in case I changed my mind. The installer is a company that has been in business for years. But I have not had them actually install yet. So I can not say how they do with seams or edges etc... I am really nervous after seeing all the terrible issues on our Garden web site. The actual install does not happen for another 10 days. However I love how they have worked with me so far. They have truly helped me in every way with the counters. I believe the father Brice has been doing this for years as everyone knows him. I have been working with the son Jesse. BFR and Associates I hope it is okay that I put their website on here. http://www.bfrandassociates.com/ They are located in Manchester NH but they do jobs in Maine, Canada, Mass, VT I have been searching for a long time. They are not the cheapest but they are not the most expensive either. They are a fair price for the job. I have also looked at Ripano but they were too high. I looked at Holbrook Granite they seemed nice but I had no recommendations about them. They do not even show their work on line. I liked BFR because I could actually go and see the countertops in person. BFR does commercial work. I also checked out Spencer Granite but thought they might be too far away from my actual home. I also visited the Boston Granite Exchange. I do not know if they install or just sell slabs. They have lovely slabs but the lighting is terrible in there so it is hard to see up close. I believe but do not know this for a fact that the Boston Granite Exchange prices their slabs higher than other places. I only heard this in passing from another customer. Not sure this is the truth or not. But in my case my installer found the stone cheaper at The Grantie Depot. Their lighting was much nicer to inspect slabs too. I hope this helps. Wow, thank you for so many quick responses! Daisyadair, maybe we can trade colors? :-) Unfortunately the paint chip is the same color as the paint, but I did not expect it to look so green once it was on the entire wall. Mimi, thank you for "enabling" me, I am more and more convinced that I want the BM Gray Owl! Squirrel, you are right, this is BM Color Viewer. However, the BM Silver Satin looks very close to what's on the color viewer, I did not have the camera batteries to take a photo of the real room (and there are plastic covers and dropcloths everywhere). I did not catch the "green" before the paint job even though I was doing BM Color Viewer. It just looks so different in person! Flyleft, good advice and I should have followed it in advance. I did the posterboard thing for the other bedroom and decided on Vale Mist, and it is PERFECT. However, color chips and BM Color Viewer don't do the trick (as I am finding out). I will let you all know what I decide tomorrow morning at 7 when I talk to the painter - you all are great, thank you so so SO much for the quick feedback! ~Lynne

I was wondering the same thing because I am seriously considering Virginia Mist right now and I keep going back to search for your pictures and try to get answers from folks with VA mist. Luckily, I had e-mailed myself the link to that page a few months ago so I can access it that way because the search function doesn't seem to pick it up. Very strange.

Anyway, my one concern with my VA mist sample is that it seems to have a zillion tiny scratches in it when I test it with a fork or knife or ball of aluminum foil. I'm assuming this is because it is honed. It's making me worry about this option at all and steering me toward brushed Cambrian black or soapstone (where the scratches can at least be buffed out).

Does your countertop show any tiny scratches in the surface? Granted, my sample is not yet sealed.

Also, how was the price? Honestly, the quote I got for the VA Mist is almost the same as the price quote I got on soapstone! So I'm wondering if I'm getting taken for a ride here! If it was more in line with Cambrian Black, it might make our decision easier.

I am soooo happy to see this message as I thought I was losing my mind. I met with my GC yesterday and mentioned that I had seen your incredible honed Virginia Mist counters and then I could not bring up the thread. I have not seen Virginia Mist locally (suburban Philadelphia). Is it also known by other names? Thanks!

Hi Dawn - I honestly don't see small scratches on my counters. I just ran a fork over a corner and didn't see anything. My husband and nine year old are the proverbial bulls in a china shop so the counters are definitely not babied. Like I said, when I look really close from certain angles I do see eraser type marks but no scratches.

I think we paid $78 per square foot which included under mount sink, cook top cut and standard edge. I would call it an upper middle class price for my small SC city.

Hi Sandtab - I've also seen the granite called Jet Mist. Here's the pic again. I wonder if the original thread will ever show up?

I'll be happy to answer any more questions that you have.
