What goes over best at a bake sale?

Will is at the middle school now and is involved with the Student Activities Council - and Thursday they are having a bake sale. Can you believe I've never done this before???

I've sent baked goods in for teacher breakfasts and whatnot, but never a "sale"...I don't even know how it works....but from your infinite wisdom and experience, - can you tell me what would be a good choice - that won't be the 13th pan of brownies, or cc cookies?

I'm still thinking about those chocolate ones with the cinnamon butter cream icing!

In our area, pies goes over well because very few people make them homemade anymore, so they are a treat.

Judy, it's not so much the higher wattage on the medium burners that you need as on the big one. You should be able to use a flat bottomed wok on that and get plenty of power. I understand shy, but they really are there to help you. The Miele showroom in Beverly Hills is an especially friendly space, and considering its location I have to think that that's corporate policy! Hm... above statement was made without thinking through your way of cooking. The wattage on the mediums is important if you have a really big pan that you're transferring from the wok into, so want to wok on one of the smaller burners. If you're not ready to cook something yourself in the showroom, ask for a personal demonstration. Even boiling water should give you a good idea about the heat and responsiveness. Could you work up the courage to make an appointment and go watch the salesman or chef use the unit? Or get a pushy friend to come along and speak for you? It's important for you to be happy with your choices, and one of the best ways to do that is to actually see the appliances in action. Re gas, yes, you can use the wok burner with a grill plate, but there are single sided ones that you can easily use on induction. Also, some of the double sided ones with shallower edges work okay as well, at least on some cooktops. I have always roasted eggplants and peppers on the gas flame to get them charred on the outside and not overcooked on the inside (a distinction which may just show up my lacks as a cook in not being able to do this in an oven). I have a little barbecue grate that's made for the purpose. It's a trick that's not for the faint of cleaning, however. Nolamom, the magnet test is a great way to assess whether the pots you have will work with induction, but if you're buying new it's probably worth your while to get pots that are known to work particularly well. Since I already have a lot of Le Creuset (works great with '60's coils, gas and induction all and I love the enamel), I don't know the specifics. Do a search here and you'll find recommendations. Some steel cookware has different amounts of steel in the sides of the pan and the bottom, so it cooks a little differently than one that's all the same. Some have more steel than others. Etc. Cast iron is pretty much cast iron, though weight and thickness will effect the way a particular pan works in comparison to another. Enamel shouldn't matter (it's an insulator but I haven't heard that it impedes magnetism). I have a little Turkish coffee pot which is stainless but doesn't attract a magnet at all. I can't remember if I tested it on Mr. Induction (all this stuff is packed for demo), but I'm pretty sure it won't work. :) Anyway, what I'm trying to say is if you're buying something new, make sure it will work well rather than just work.

For stir-frying, burner shape is as important or even more important than burner power. I test drove the Miele and Dacor cooktops as well as the BlueStar rangetop we chose. (Not an apples to apples test but at first I was hesitant to give up the space to a rangetop - then when I found out how much better the BlueStar performed for stir frying I changed my mind.) The 15K BTU burners on our Bluestar that are about the same power as the Miele and Dacor burners stir fry much better because they are much more efficient at delivering heat to the bottom of the wok and they do it very evenly. The 22K BTU burner on our BlueStar is even better. When I tested the Dacor and Miele with a chicken stir fry, I put in half the chicken at a time to sear to not overload it and it still wasn't a perfect sear. When I tested the BlueStar, it was a hot day and my DH had packed the ice chest so carefully that the chicken was mostly frozen when I took it out to start cooking. But if I was going to sacrifice my drawer to the rangetop it better be good so I put in all the chicken at once and the BlueStar immediately had it sizzling and seared perfectly. The food really tasted different cooked on the BlueStar. I highly recommend calling around the appliance stores to see if you can find one with the types of burner you are considering hooked up so you can try a stir fry recipe on the burner. I took the same wok and recipe ingredients to each cooktop/rangetop I was considering and learned a lot by doing that. If Bluestar offered a single burner version of their rangetop, that is what I would recommend to you. If you don't have a chance to do that, what you want to look for is a burner that has a shape to deliver heat efficiently and evenly to the bottom of a wok. An example of a bad type of shape is the sealed burner like on the Dacor and Miele cooktops. These have a flat circular top and flame comes out of the side of the circle. The higher you turn the burner up, the more the flame shoots out to the side; no flame goes up in the center of the burner. An example of a type that works really well for a wok is the BlueStar burner shape where the flame comes straight up out of the burner. The burner shape has a circle of flame at the center of the burner and 8 star rays of flame coming out from that circle. The center grate comes off the burner so that the wok sits right down into the flame and heat is delivered to the whole bottom of the wok. This is very similar to the wok arrangements I saw in China. A friend has the DCS wok burner and that does a very good job. We have the Miele oven. I'm very happy with its cooking performance but I find its controller kind of annoying at times. Its heating is very stable and accurate. It cooks bread well. Things I don't like: Maximum timer setting is 59 minutes and 59 seconds. I'd gladly give up the seconds to have a timer that times longer than an hour. If you put in the time and then forget to hit the button that starts the timer, it waits a bit and then cancels the timer. Too many modes - for example they have a proofing mode that only allows two temps (both higher than I would usually want to proof at) and a defrost mode with a wide range of temps (which is what I use for proofing because I can set it to 80 or 90 degrees). One ends up having to learn little tricks like which baking mode lets you set the temp up to 550 degrees (most of the modes stop at 500). If the BlueStar ovens had been available when we were choosing, I'd have been very tempted to choose them. I'm short and the side opening door would be easier for me. The one downside is that they aren't self-cleaning and I'm rather addicted to not having to clean my oven. How is your breaker box occupancy? Ours is full. If you want to add that other oven at a later date, will you have a 220 V breaker spot open? That might be one reason to choose between gas and electric ovens.

I can't really think of much to add-the dessert all sound yummy! If there is a Trader Joes near you, I just bought some of their mini peanut butter cups (about the size of a chocolate chip) I was thinking I'd put one on the middle of a peanut butter cookie. They are SOO cute! Or you could use the Hershey Kissables-a candy coated colorful mini Hershey kiss. The chocolate covered pretzel rods sounds like something pretty fun and different. Would chocolate covered strawberries be too much work or too much $$? I love those! My mom used to make Angel Food cupcakes. They were really yummy and good for those watching their calories. We just had a bake sale and we charged 50c for 2 muffins, or 2 cupcakes, 5.00 homemade Angel Food cake, 1.00 for 6 cookies etc. If you have a school with a PTA ask them. You have to price reasonably or else you won't sell. Remember these are all donated free so it is all profit. Don't forget to get change ahead of time I had 50 in ones and some 10 & 5. I had a roll of quarters. Price everything even. If someone hands you a large bill, 50 or 100, just ask for something smaller. Even at the beginning people will give you 20's and if the sale is small, do not be afraid to ask for smaller bills. Keep it in a cash box, and have someone stay with the money all the time, away from the public, but not where you have to turn your back. Seperate table etc.Make sure you do have a helper or more.Do not try to sell, make change and watch the items. All items should be wrapped or in plastic bags. Have a supply of grocery bags or small boxes to put the items in. Price everything, Sell what is posted, no changing unless it is right at the end with just a few items less. Brownies sell for 6 for about 2.00. No free samples.

I think brownies and cupcakes are the best - easily eatable, cheap, and everyone likes them. Cupcakes should be in "normal" colors - white or yellow, no chocolate, though chocolate frosting is good. Muffins, too, though not too exotic.

Depends what type of bake sale it is. If it's just for the kids, not open to the community, then cupcakes, cookies and brownies win.

However, if it's open to the families and community, I have found that stuff Mom can throw in the freezer works well, fruit breads, scones , muffins, etc. In my experience Mom's want to buy something but don't necessarily want to use it right away. They are also likely to buy more if they know they can stash it in the freezer rather than eat that day.

Are the kids buying the treats during their lunch break or is this something for adults? Kids love cookies-I make chocolate chip with m&m's or chocolate thumbprints. At Christmas I've made gingerbread men, but those are very time consuming. The peanut butter cookies with the Hershey kisses are very popular. Just put a sticker on the package clearly stating they contain peanut butter! Snack mixes like puppy chow and the white trash mix also seem to do well. You could also do some chocolate dipped pretzle rods covered in sprinkles. Kids are naturally attracted to colorful food, hence the m&m's and sprinkles.

I actually have an email in to the coordinator because I don't really know who the target is...not sure what I'm doing - but now I feel a little less foolish for asking her those questions - LOL.

Thanks for the suggestions - the sale is at the school, but I'm not sure if staff is a target ?

No matter how many pans of brownies or cookies they have, that's what will sell.

Hi punamytsike, both are made in small muffin/cupcake tins so are similar in size.

A cupcake is made with the same type of batter you make a regular cake with and then is iced with sweet icing, often a butter cream icing.

A muffin is a much heartier batter resulting in a texture more like a breakfast bread. Most often muffins have nuts and dried fruit and are made with hearty grains like oatmeal and whole wheat. They are not usually iced.

Cupcakes are used as a sweet treat or dessert, muffins for a breakfast bread.

Applesauce and Bannana cakes, go fast.

I've made upside down cakes, They are easy and impressive.

Sold Biscotti and Pizzelles

Even Waffles in Ziploc bags.
The Ladies Aux. make a ton of cakes.

I have a great cookbook on the subject.....

"Favorite Brand Name BAKE SALE Cookbook" that is full of "winning" (easy-to-make) recipes.

From experience, cinnamon and/or sticky pecan rolls are the first to go if you start selling early in the morning, followed quickly by brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

Bar cookies are simple to make, generally make a lot, and can be divided into single-servings or several multiple servings. Depending on the "crowd" you may make more money offering single-serving items (eat and run crowd).

I also suggest making 2-3 loaves of quick breads out of a recipe that makes a 9x5-inch recipe (two 7-1/2x3-1/2-inch loaves, or three 5-3/4x3-3/4-inch). Small bundt cakes, rather than one large one... You'll make more money on the smaller loaves/cakes than you will on one large one.

As a fluke, one year I made several recipes of "Chex Party Mix" for a bake sale and it ALL went within the first 15 minutes we opened, so you just never know.....

Over in my neck of the woods, when my school would have a bake sale/football game, the rice krispy treats sold out long before any other items--and there were a lot of those rice krispy treats to sell, too!

I can't add much to what has already been posted. I only did bake sales for the humane society up at the lake when I lived there. Chex mix is a great idea and always a hit. I did spiced nuts one time too. Homemade bread, rolls, and sweet rolls always went fast.

Jessica, the version of white trash that I make is a combination of chex, cherrios, pretzels, and peanuts mixed with almond bark or white chocolate. There is another called puppy chow or trash that is a combo of peanut butter and chocolate then tossed in powdered sugar. It's the sweet salty thing that I love.

Good idea to use Puppy Chow and an assortment of other "nibbles".

Another easy-to-make mix....

SPICY-SWEET PRETZEL MIX
(source: Everyday Food - Sept. 2008)

2 c. thin pretzel sticks
1 c. natural almonds
2 T. unsalted butter
2 T. dark-brown sugar
1 T. water
1/8 t. cayenne pepper

1. Preheat oven to 300Â°F. Line a large rimed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, toss together pretzels and almonds.

2. In a small saucepan, bring butter, sugar, cayenne, and 1 T. water to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour over pretzel mixture in bowl; gently toss to combine.

3. Spread pretzel mixture in a single layer on prepared sheet. Bake until almonds are crisp, about 20-minutes. Tossing occasionally. Cool on sheet before serving. (To store, keep at room temperature, up to 5 days.

Note: 1/8 t. cayenne pepper may be too hot for some folks.

Makes 8 servings: 171 calories; 12 g fat, 4.4 g protein, 12.6 g carb, 2.4 g fiber

Like David said, white trash is a snack mix coated in white almond bark or white chocolate chips. Here's my recipe.

1 10oz package mini pretzels
5 c frosted cheerios
5 c corn chex
2 c dry roasted peanuts
1 lb m&m's
2 12-oz packages Nestle white chocolate chips
3 T vegetable oil

In a large bowl, combine first five ingredients. Melt chips and oil over low heat. Stir until smooth. Pour over cereal mixture and mix well. Spread onto 3 wax paper lined cookie sheets. Cool and break apart. Store in an airtight container. Makes 5 qts

Great ideas everyone! I'd have never thought of the puppychow/white trash - or chex mix. I think I will do one of those - in addition to some cupcakes with sprinkles. I'd never be forgiven if I sent everything I made into the sale...so making two things will allow me to keep a little of each at home for the kid. :-)

I did hear that it's a quick sale at the end of the day and kids usually grab a thing or two and take on the bus.
