Which hutch design do you like best?

This is originally what was drawn up. I have 50" to work with, but this is only 48". There is 2- 24" glass doors on top. On the bottom, there is 15 inch cabinets on either side with an 18 in drawer base.

This is the new drawing.

It is only 45" wide which is 5 inches less than the usable space--about 9 inches away from the sliding back door which might be too much.

The top has 3- 15" glass doors and the bottom has 2- 15" cabinets on the sides with a 15" drawer set in the middle.

Also, I worked on the island a little more...does that look better? I am not sure what I will put in all those spice drawers, but it seems better than just having a 6 inch filler. Do you think bead board would look nice on the side or should I keep it as fake doors. I am going for a simple, but elegant farmhouse look.

I hate to see you trade an 18" drawer bank for a 15". I thought you were considering an 18" open shelf area in the center of the top section?

Not sure about the hutch...yet, but do have some questions.

Is your sink going to be centered under the window? Also, what are your plans for a backspash, regular countertop and hutch counter? My thoughts on the beadboard would depend on what else you are doing.

Also, what would you think of putting the same size cabinet on the left of your range hood as you do on the right, then take the remaining room and put open shelves there. Like Redroze did in this pic: This would eleminate the narrow bookcase to the counter and keep the counter open from your sink to your range.

What are you going to use your hutch for? Have you considered taking the top cabinets all the way down to the counter?

Just some thoughts...hope it helps.

OK, I may be the only dissenter here, but I actually like the third one best. And, then I wouldn't paint the walls the aqua, I'd go with a neutral, and try and find aqua towels and accessories. To me there is more of a design appeal, with the third one, second one is safe, and the top one looks disproportionate. I think the aqua pops more as an accessory rather than the wall colour. Having said that, I just went to a linens store yesterday, and couldn't find ONE bathroom accessory or towel in the cranberry I was contemplating as an accent for my basement bathroom which right now if completely neutral except for some colour in the granite countertop. That had me thinking maybe I shouldn't do that colour in an expensive tile accent. I love changing bath mats, towels, etc. What other colours could you use with that aqua in the future, if you would like to freshen things up, or want a change?

Thanks everybody. There are so many talented people out there. Bmore, that's a very good point about the center doors not opening as far in option 1. We had not considered that. Originally, we did have something akin to a corbel. I worried about it getting too cute. DH will post that later. Country smile, my main reasons for this "hutch" are for a large expanse of counter space plus additional storage. The need for counter space is one reason I do not want to bring any part of it to the lower cabinetry, as several people have suggested, though I agree it would look attractive. DH and I refer to this section of the kitchen as a hutch, as a way to differentiate it from the other sections. But it does not have to be furniture like, just attractive, proportional, and functional. I agree with others here that the all glass option opens up the space, and is a good contrast to the large floor to ceiling wall pantry, which will hold a small microwave, food, etc. Though this kitchen will have far more storage than my current kitchen, it is not huge. I am just not certain if I can afford to give up this space that I might need for practical items and don't want to end up adding fabric down the road. I too am a dish freak, though they don't all go together. So, I want practical and at the same time pretty, hence, trying to combine the glass and closed doors. LWO, a good point about not making the whole thing so wide. The architect suggested we could do that and I also felt it was crowded. DH is working on getting the final plans drawn up for the cabinet maker, but will play will all of your ideas later. Many many thanks to all of you. GW is becoming our KD.

Yes Island all over the place but starting to narrow things down (I hope). Good news is we are still awaiting the permits to get started so we can keep changing our minds on the cheap. The cabinets are that color sort of-- actually they are a bit lighter and less creamy in real life. That said though, we keep looking at other options b/c the Nougat/cabinet match isn't quite perfect-- still a bit of a warm and cold conflict as you astutely pointed out. Light grey/taupe tiles look really good with the Nougat esp with a white grout. Piatra Grey and Raven, on the other hand, look great with the cabinet color but feels a bit more formal than we were attempting. The crackle blue tile is gorgeous and might work if we confine the tile to the behind the range back splash area-- perhaps. Might be too blue though. If we can get comfortable with Nougat or another light color counter (London Grey and Stellar Snow don't really work either) then we'd run the subway up and around the window (I think) Layout... The view isn't ocean as we are on a cove in a salt pond. No need to improve that part at least : )

I also like the subway (perhaps because the travertine is something I did in the past and no longer want). FWIW, in tems of clean-up, I never had a problem with my tiles. Maybe you need to look at other shapes? Arabesque tiles are really pretty, or maybe something with irregular edges and some wave like the Settecento New Yorker 3x12 tile?

i'm not quite understanding why you would want to cut it down? Is it for the same reason possibly that I thought about doing the same thing, which would be because i was afraid that it was too close to my back door? If thats it, don't do it. make the hutch as large as possible. I'm glad that I went as far as I did with mine. it does not interfere with the door opening and traffic coming in and out at all.i have 7" of wall space between the hutch and the door. my kitchen is not finished yet, but heres a pic.

The only reason I wouldn't make it "as big as possible" is because I didn't know whether the large 24" doors are too big--lookwise and function. If I make it into the 3 doors, it would automatically cut it down 3 inches because I am not going with custom cabinets.

I don't want to come all the way down to the countertop because I need counter space.

These are my inspirational pics which is why I hesitate to do the shelf. It is pretty, but not what I imagined for this space. I wanted all glass uppers.

Reducing the size of the drawer there doesn't bother me too much. I added 4 drawers on either side of the range and they are 21 inches wide. I just want to pick what looks best since this is going to be my focal point.

I'll have to think about what I need to store in that cabinet next to the range. I might need some hidden storage. :) That shelf is soooo pretty though. I wonder if I can pull it off!

Using your inspiration photos as a guide .... how about using 2 24" uppers, with 2 glass doors on each. That way, your hutch will have 4 12" doors. It will look a lot like the photo above.
