Kitty litter question

I have turned an old front door coat closet into a "litter room" for the cats. I put down $1 store stick vinyl flooring and painted it inside. I installed a cat door on the front of it so they can come and go as needed.

I have just purchased a new litter box, and use the clumping litter, but it seems to need something under the box to catch the litter on their feet and keep it inside the closet.

What do you use that has proven to be good?

I buy those little pieces of carpet that look like a sample. They're about 1'X2'. It does help some.

I bought a "tray" that goes under washers, etc. It's just white, and about 3'x3', I think. Catches a lot of that litter trail. I think I paid about $12.00 for it, but it will last forever.

A) If the compost is 'finished', the particles are very small and will be very water retentive - IMO, not well-suited physically for use in container soils in any appreciable volume. B) If the compost is NOT finished, it contains particles highly variable in size that break down very quickly into increasingly smaller particles. As unfinished compost breaks down, it does add some nutrients to the soil, but it also promotes the immobilization of N. When it breaks down to the 'finished' stage .... well, see A) above. Compost actually adds very little in the way of nutrients. What it does add can easily be supplied, either macro or micronutrients, by other either organic or chemical supplements. It increases water retention as it fills valuable soil pores and decreases aeration. The question I would beg of myself is: Why choose to use it, knowing there are other organic alternatives with better structural stability and that what it adds nutritionally can be replaced very simply with 1 or 2 fertilizer additives that will be required regardless of whether compost is used or not. Ah, well, it seems I have survived the composting process myself! Anyway, for a cheap source of compostable litter, get 40 lb bags of stove pellets for wood burning stoves. It is about $4 a bag, as opposed to $8 for a 7lb bag of FelinPine®. As for toxoplasmosis, it is not pregnancy that is the issue, per se, rather it is only a VERY small time window (two weeks in the first trimester) during which the disease is transmittable to the fetus, and ONLY if the mother has not had prior exposure. And ONLY if the mother has a new cat, who ALSO has not been previously exposed, because th organism is only present in the feces during a brief window after initial exposure. I.e. it is almost impossible to get the toxoplasmid from cat feces. In fact, a study of the organism had to be scrapped and totally redesigned, because it was based on a sample population of cat owners, assuming they would harbor the organism. Instead, they found that there was no evidence that ANYONE had EVER contracted toxoplasmosis through this vector. Instead, they found that the vast majority of cases (close to 100%) resulted from pica.

Four indoor cats here -- and one litter box! It is kept in the unused master bathroom bathtub! A hard decision -- but that spot has worked out SO well for us. Our litter box must be lidless because our cats literally outgrew the lid itself! LOL! The best thing of all is that the box cannot be seen because of the high walls of the tub AND the fact the tub is located behind the "swing" of the door so I love it! And the tub is easy to clean too! Our policy is scoop out the box several times during the day -- into a grocery bag, tie it shut, and stash in a tall brass garbage bin (which also has a medium sized plastic bag) that JUST fits in a empty slot between the vanity and the shower. The garbage can is emptied once a day out to the main outside garbage can. We were lucky that a litter container JUST fits in behind the brass bin too! So the extra-large main container of litter sits in the garage -- and the DH fills up the one in the bathroom. The scoop is kept in a pretty garbage bin just under-and-behind the toilet -- so it is out-of-sight too. But still handy! Along with a brush-and-pan to sweep up any scattered litter. And a deodorant spray like Febreeze (which works great BTW!) I would dearly love a better spot -- but this house has no basement nor a laundry room so this system has worked for all of us! Jan

I think silica is the same as crystals from what I can see. I did use them for a number of years. They worked the best of any cat litter I had ever used. However, I did read and hear from the vet that they are not very good for your cats and that it is bad for their lungs. Two of mine have lung issues that may or may not be from this litter, but I have since switched to the worlds best cat litter.

I just use a fluffy bath rug under mine. It seems to help, but they do track litter beyond it.

How 'bout a sign on the inside of the door, right at the cat's eye level, that says "WIPE YOUR FEET!" Oh yeah! It's for cats! ~sigh..~ How 'bout "PLEASE, WIPE YOUR FEET?" Nancy

Cute MissKitty!! I only wish it were that easy!
I do notice that at times one of the cats tend to miss and pee on the floor. It is a large litter box, and the cats are not very big, just old and missing their mark. So I think I will need something that can be hosed off from time to time, rather than machine washed. Maybe an old welcome mat, or car mat or something....

I use clear plastic all weather car mats. You can get them at any auto shop. The plastic ridges catch a lot of litter. Just slide them a wee bit under the box. Easy to wash and hose off.

I use a rubber bath mat under the fluffy rug! I didn't know you were also dealing with that problem.

I use one of those clear pieces of plastic that go under an office chair from Office Depot or Staples, it just hoses off and it's big enough to catch everything they track out.

A big floor matt goes under my cat box. It catches the pieces of litter they kick out when they scratch.

I use a giant plastic container for the litter box. The sides are almost 2 feet high. They can jump over it easy enough (even Stewie when he was a kitten refused to use the little one!)I also have rugs that I get at the thrift store and keep until they get pulled apart by their claws. They wash and vacuum fine. Currently, the boxes are in the cellar so I have a plastic shower curtain taped to the concrete floor then the plastic backed rugs over that. Each litter box has its lid under the box so I can cover it if necessary. When we moved to WV from GA- I just overed one of the boxes and moved it in the back of the pick-up. Made the night at the hotel easier since they had their regular box with their smells (I did clean it before the trip!).
