results of well and septic system inspections

the home we purchased on 5 acres had a failed septic that will run all in all about $8,000 to redo after permits perk test etc...The well checked out except it showed e-coli in it which we were told by the plumber who did the inspection-(very reliable local outfit)that it was due to the property being vacant and the water being stagnant and it is previous ag-land -like 100years ago. Does this sound right? The septic was leaking into the ground b/c it failed and will be replaced but it is usually located at least 75 ft from the well. It will be chlorinated and flushed (the well) on Monday and retested. Let me know if this sounds right or familiar??? Any chance at all the ground is actually infecting the well from the septic???? Thanks!!
