Metal Roof over old roof
Comments (10)Mightyanvil and Brickeyee, thanks for the input. Our roof is not leaking, about 10 years old and in fine shape. We're doing a major build out/remodel and want a great looking roof but do not want to do a tear off. There are so many style variants of corrogated & standing seam type roofs that I'm confused as to which 26 gauge style might be our best bet for the dent free roof of our dreams. I'll review the manufacturer's specs for the roof, re the underlayment. So many different companies with variants of similar products, egads, hope I don't make an expensive mistake. Thanks again........See MoreBest Roof Shingles
Comments (5)A continous run ridgevent is best when used in conjunction with continous run soffit/eave venting. The air is drawn up through the soffit/eaves uninterrupted up and out the ridgeventing. Any existing venting such as gable vents would need to be blocked off. Ridgeventing alone would be better than the box vents, imo as with a cape, you might not have existing overhangs for soffit/eave venting. If you have a small overhang on your cape, typically about 6", it could easily be made into a continous run soffit venting. I always recommend tearing off the existing roofing on older homes as it gives you the oppurtunity to see the conditions of the roof sheathing for any rotted areas, inspections of all flashings as well as any roof protrusions such as plumbing vents. I can't speak for Atlas, but here's a link and Im sure there are others that you could look into concerning shingle ratings. Here is a link that might be useful: shingle ratings...See MoreRoofing- Metal or Shingles?
Comments (20)My brother has a metal roof. The guest bedroom is on the second floor with a vaulted ceiling. I do not sleep when I am a guest there. Sound of rain on "some" metal roofs are torturous to my ears. Something not mentioned here is the sound, the sales guy that pitched me said with his roofs sound is not a problem, he wouldn't put into the contract that I would get a 50% rebate if the sound of rain could be heard within the home. Maybe my brother doesn't want overnight guests. It's an old thread but added that if someone is using this for research....See MoreWoo Hoo! Steel Roof!!
Comments (65)Chicory, any pictures of the house yet?? You make a good point about the gravy train coming to a halt - I really hope that prices start coming down. Maybe they'll get better manners, too! It's disgusting how many don't return phone calls, don't show up for appointments, etc. Michael, that's a lovely roof on your retirement house. We just want something plain in a coppery-brown color - we won't be able to afford a real copper roof, but something that emulates that "old penny" color in the painted/powdercoated products works for us. (If we win the lottery I'm not doing it to this house, I'm selling it and buying another one I know of and putting a copper roof on THAT one!) Most of the FDs up here are well-stocked because we're relatively close to Worcester MA where that terrible fire that killed a whole slew of firefighters was. People started really pushing to equip their firefighters after that, and Sawzalls are one of the cheaper things they can really use. It won't help in your area but the Jeremiah Lucey Grant Program provides $25,000-50,000 for equipment and training for FDs in NY, MA and along the Gulf Coast. BTW - In my book, Michael isn't advertising because not once has he ever posted the name of his business nor any contact information for it - in fact, more than once in the past he has gone to great lengths NOT to do so in order to comply with forum rules, even though he's been asked outright. It would be rather ridiculous, not to mention tedious, to call every roof/window/door company in northern Ohio and ask "does Michael-who-goes-by-the-nickname-Brushworks-on-Gardenweb own that company"? :-)...See Morealisande
