My goal is to have viable seeds to sow in the ground next year. So if there's baby fruit by the time this container plant has to be brought indoors, then the warmth inside may see it through to a mature seed tomato. I do have that plastic cover, but it still gets cold under there. There's no question that a tomato grown in the ground through a hot season has alot more flavor and sweetness. I've got a few of those and have been picking when the fruit is still just a tiny bit green and will finish ripening on the sunny windowsill. OMG they're good. Saving the one Mr. Stripey I've got so far, and am impatient for more of the Brandywine's (pink-red toms toward top of photo) to do their thing. Yes: I've turned into a real TomatHo and there's no going back.

What is the brand and model of your genny? I researched several before I purchased mine for the same reasons you mentioned and discovered there were a few that I read on that suggested not hooking up anything sensitive to voltage or anything that was "solid state".(seems like a pretty worthless gen to me?!) Apparently some genny's put out "dirty power". The sine wave has sharp peaks and valleys vs. the normal smooth sine wave with broad peaks and valleys that you get from the power co and other gens. If you have one that puts out dirty power then I am not sure I would chance anything with it unless you talked to the manufacturer of the ups and they said that it would specifically clean that up. I bought the biggest ups that i could get from best buy. It was the geek squad brand, had plenty of power and cost about $175. I have this hooked up to all of my electronics in my entertainment center.(the amp and dvd are hooked up to the non-battery side) I think ups' are a great idea on anything sensitive no matter where the power is coming from. (they are especially useful for those brownouts you mentioned) The ups will run my Directv DVR for well over an hour.(so the programs continue to record even if the power goes out). Hope this helps. Yeah, I'm using it even now. It helps me to know where the calls and texts came from. I also used to block unknown phone numbers that called me and bothered me with annoying stuff like advertising. So I decided to look for an application or a site on the internet to know who the owner of the unknown phone number is. I found a great site livesupportrhino.com that provides me a general access to a full report of the person behind the anonymous number. It usually includes the name, location and street. You can also find the list of area codes there.

What plants look good in your yard right now - without hand watering?

I've got dozens of Salvia greggii plants. Some do fine without watering but a few do not & its beyond me why this is. I have one that will look ratty and stressed thats on a slope where there are lots of tree roots but others look fine higher up, they get more shade so maybe thats the difference? Its not THAT much more. I notice a bit of watering will bring them around and encourage blooming but I'm too lazy. I will give the really bad two or three plants a drink when a month has gone by without rain but mostly they are on their own. I've got several plants that need no watering in summer. The trick is to find the ones that will do that and still tolerate some wet periods we get from time to time. I choose xeric plants and sort of experiment. Some make it, some don't. I loose more plants to rain than drought. Here are some plants that never need watering and still look good here in Oklahoma, I'm on a slight slope so I get good drainage. Most prairie grasses with a couple exceptions look best when its hot and dry. Flame Flowers Desert Marigold Ephedra Blackfoot Daisy Missouri Primrose Purple Prairie Clover Dalea greggi Ratibida--Prairie Coneflower Dyssodia Annual Bitterweed Sphaeralcea ambigua & S. angustifolia Heath Aster Lantana, the wild types Purple Texas Scullcap Liatris Zexmenia Mealy cup sage Annual gaillardia All the artemisia both native and the ones in the nursery trade except for silver mound. It melts and turns into an ugly dead mat flat on the ground.

Well, I haven't googled it and I don't know. Dr. Koop made himself known, by being on t.v. frequently - haven't seen the current one on t.v. yet.

Now I remember hearing about her. Good for her.

I grew up down the street from Dr. Koop. His son was my very good friend all through high school. Not only did we live near each other, but we came in alpha order in my class, so we always sat next to each other. He was one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. This was the son who died in a mountain climbing accident in New Hampshire at age 20. It was terribly sad.
