This letter to the journal Nature outlines the safety risk of antibiotic resistance due to horizontal gene transfer from GMOs and points out that this is not the only risk that needs to be urgently addressed by the authorities. ------ Ampicillin threat leads to wider transgene concern Sir: We are concerned by the suggestion, in your Editorial "Don't rely on Uncle Sam" (Nature 434, 807; 2005), that the US Food and Drug Administration does not consider the presence of the ampicillin-resistance gene in Syngenta's unapproved variety of genetically modified Bt10 maize to represent a safety problem. This is not the view of the UK government's scientific advisers (the DEFRA Antimicrobial Resistance Coordination Group), who state that some important veterinary pathogens remain susceptible to ampicillin (K. L. Goodyear et al. J. Antimicrob. Chemother. 54, 959; 2004). They state that there is "extremely low or no detected resistance in certain bacterial species", so that "any occasional transfer of resistance genes to these organisms would be a very significant event". If, as a result of such horizontal gene transfer, it became necessary to use more modern antimicrobials to treat animal disease, they write, "then there could be significant consequences for the consumer through the food chain". The risk of horizontal gene transfer from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is not a theoretical one. One study found that, after Bt genes in plasmid form were incubated in the saliva in a sheep's mouth for a few minutes, they could still transform Escherichia coli bacteria so that they developed antibiotic resistance (P. S. Duggan et al. Br. J. Nutr. 89, 159$B!](B166; 2003). In addition, it is worth noting that the ampicillin-resistance gene in Bt10 maize and other genetically modified crops is a remnant of the bacterial plasmid inserted into these varieties, and would therefore function very efficiently if taken up by bacteria as a result of horizontal gene transfer. Once the Bt10 maize incident has been dealt with, we feel there should be a review of the general question of horizontal gene transfer from GMOs. There is no reason to believe that any health implications are confined to antibiotic-resistance marker genes; they could, for example, equally apply to the inserted Bt toxin genes present in all genetically modified Bt crops. However, the transfer of antibiotic resistance is the only such risk currently being addressed by the authorities that regulate GMOs. We consider that the case-by-case approval approach used by the authorities does not adequately address such problems, which are common to all GMOs. We're in contract The difference in NYC (over other places) is that the contract comes SO late. All the negotiating (cut in price to compensate for inspection issues, etc.) is done BEFORE the deal is enforceable. In other areas, those things are done to modify the original contract. But in other states, there is still a little bit of time where the circumstance you describe could happen. Verbal communication saying that "the contract will be signed," and then the signer changes his mind. i've seen many posts here about people who say, "we submitted our bid, and we heard they're accepting, but we don't have the signed contract yet." Often that could happen over the weekend even in another jurisdiction! The agent looks at the offers on Saturday, talks w/ the owners, notifies the buyers of the end result (not price, but yea/nay)--but the sellers aren't in the office to put their signature on the paper. So one of the buyers comes back w/ a lot more money early on Monday morning, and the sellers get told about it when they come in to sign the other contract. Not being idiots, they take the new offer. Sorry and all that, but this is business. And it's not like the disappointed seller has lost that much--it was just the WEEKEND. What, 48 hours at most, and one of them was a Sunday? She didn't pay for an inspection. She didn't pass up lots and lots of other homes because she thought she had this one. There weren't any *real* damages in the legal or financial sense. The process of buying an apartment (and don't say "for an apartment?" christopherh. They are the ONLY HOMES YOU CAN BUY in many neighborhoods of the city; we do not HAVE single family homes in many of our neighborhoods. Or if we do, they are three times the price of an apartment, or more--my apartment in such a neighborhood is supposedly worth $450k; a 3BR is worth $575k, and we're considered "affordable"), esp. in NYC where it is likely to be a co-op instead of a condo, is three months minimum, and usually at least a month between offer and signed contract. So the seller is disappointed, but she is not actually OUT anything. She was not at all damaged, except emotionally. As for damages, if a true contract is breached-- If you sue the seller for "specific performance," you can win. As long as there's not some contingency they can use to squeak out of it (and most contingencies are for the BUYER, not for the seller). You could perhaps use that threat to negotiate letting them out of the contract. You could say, "we will not sue you, if you will pay us the equivalent of OUR deposit, to compensate us for the time we lost trying to buy your house." *maybe* just *maybe* a judge wouldn't find in your favor, but I highly doubt it. If they didn't, you could prove damages in terms of the market going up, your inspection money, and the time you lost. HOWEVER, as you noted, in many instances, if a buyer has to back out bcs of an unpreventable disasters, a seller will refund the deposit out of a sense of karma. and likewise, buyers who see that the seller has had a disaster, will often agree to dissolve the contract out that same sense of karma. They may ask for the reimbursement of true monetary losses.

We have a table, dining chairs and coffee table from them. GREAT stuff and very solid. It's cheap because they are using wood from short-lived tropical trees. Rubber and mango, for example, need to be removed and replaced every 30 or so years to keep production up. So the wood that is "waste" from the point of view of the mango orchard is "product" for the furniture maker. They both win.

If you don't need the extension capability, looks like Ikea also sells a very similar table for $749. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/moeckelby-table-oak-00293772/ Personally I like the way the Pottery Barn table extends and the look just a little bit more, but it's also twice the price of the World Market. Seems like the World Market is a good compromise at a good price. But I can't speak to the quality (never bought their furniture before).

I like Mercado San Juan in Mexico City, where you can find armadillo and rattlesnake, although I did not buy either. Grand Central Market in Los Angeles is somewhat similar, but on a slightly smaller scale.

The English Market in Cork, Ireland. Made me almost want to cry because we had no kitchen and couldn't buy the meat and fish.

The best food market in Canada has to be the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. Even Granville Island Market in Vancouver doesn't compare to the St. Lawrence.

The South Market has permanent vendors and is open during the week. And on Saturdays the North Market opens with day vendors. As much as I love Toronto, the St. Lawrence Market is the only thing I really miss.

I was trying to remember that one in Barcelona. It was that market that made me change the way I travel. I so wanted to cook food but couldn't because I was in a hotel. Now I try to plan apartment rentals and great food markets so I can buy food and cook it!

Ann_T - a great reason to head to eastern Canada, then. I really enjoyed Granville a couple of years back.

Cathy - I was wondering if you were going to reference Jungle Jim's!

Lars - I can't believe I've been in LA all this time and never been to Grand Central Market. Maybe we should put that on the list for a destination the next time we have CF visitors.

I've been to St. Lawrence and it's amazing, I loved it. I've been to Detroit's Eastern Market too, and passed up the raccoon and snapping turtle available there. And I've been to Jungle Jim's, tacky but great fun.

Now I have a list, so thanks!

You reminded me of a friend who lives in Florida who used to travel frequently to Italy and loved to cook. She had a little old car that she parked with a friend in England. She kept the trunk full of kitchen gadgets: graters, her garlic press, pots and pans, and when she wanted to do a jaunt to Italy she drove there in that little old car, stayed in a small apartment and spent her time passing through food markets and cooking to her heart's content, trying out the cheeses, vegetables and wines of Italy. It sounded to me like a wonderful way to travel.

She still loves to cook and try out new dishes.

Well, I'm in Florida and have never, ever lived in a place that had a great food market. I don't consider the one in DeKalb to be in that status. On the reverse side, I don't like cities so it is probably never in my future to visit one of the above markets. My life is less for it, but I'm still happy! We do have a very limited amount of gourmet items down here--have to go to different small shops. That's my life and I love it!

Paris has many wonderful daily fresh markets, but I always make a trek to La Grande Epicerie on Rue de SÃ¨vres
when I'm in that beautiful city. It's a foodie heaven.

Wow, Kyle, I'm glad you posted that. I went to that Farmer's Market maybe 25+ years ago, once. It was only open early Saturday mornings and you either got there at 6 am or you basically got the leftovers. Well, at that time I was in my early 20s and didn't cook all that much and the thought of getting up that early on a SATURDAY fuh cryin out loud, for some fruit! LOL Once was enough!

I didn't even know if they still existed. In fact it looks like they've blossomed into a real daily market. I'm going to have to go check it out. Do you go often? How are the deals?

Cookebook - How's Central Market in Houston? Every time I visit my brother in Austin, I like to go to the the original location and sample my way through the meandering isles.

Sharon - That's one thing I don't do is take my own utensils. I make do with whatever is on hand, but there are plenty of times I wish I had a favorite pot or knife with me. That would be really fun to have my own rolling kitchen.

For Italian, Boston's North End is fabulous. Lots of small Mom/Pop grocery stores, delis, fresh pasta shops, pastries, & fruit/veggie stands. That where I first purchased squid ink pasta.

Plan on walking the Freedom Trail so you can burn off some of the calories from all the samples. :)

Central Market in Houston is great! I haven't been to the one in Austin to compare, but I work about a mile from the one here and I go there fairly regularly.

I hesitated to mention it here because it's not on the same par as some of these grand markets mentioned here. But it's a fun place to shop with a wonderful variety of foods which you don't see in a normal grocery store.

I usually take out of town visitors there. They are always like, What? We're going to a grocery store? Uh huh, that ought to be fun! Then on the way out, after they've just spend 1+ hours marveling and tasting they inevitably say how much fun it was and how glad they are that we went.

To describe it, I would say that it's kinda like whole foods only on a much grander and more eclectic scale. The variety of produce, fish, meats, wines(!), bulk foods, breads, cheeses, chocolates, etc, is outstanding.

It's been several decades since I've been there, but Stanley Market in Hong Kong... It seems to be pretty touristy now, but when we lived there late 60's/eary 70's it wasn't so much. Stanley Market

I took a great class at Natural Gourmet in NYC that was about Market Cooking... we first went to Greenmarket (Chef had scoped it out before class to "plan" the menu) and prepared a meal based on what looked great at the market that day.

Don't know if you're still reading this, Kyle (cookebook) but I went to the Airline farmer's market on Saturday. We've been having such gorgeous weather and I thought it was the perfect day to walk around that outdoor market.

Well, I have to say, there WERE a lot of sellers and it was fun to look around. However, in the end, I bought very little. Mainly because the vast majority of the produce had no visible price signs! I don't like to ask because I always get the feeling that they'll quote me a price based on what they think I'll pay. And the places that did have prices, well mostly they weren't better than grocery stores.

I did get some roma tomates for 50c a pound, great price. And a HUGE seedless watermelon for $4, in OCTOBER yet! I had just bought a seedless watermelon for $4 at the regular grocery store last week and it was pretty small. But I just LOVE watermelon and keep buying as long as I can. When I got home and put the two watermelons next to each other, I about fainted. The one from the farmers market was easily twice as big as the one from the grocery store.

I also bought some jarred salsas for $2.29 each. I hope they are good. That size jar in the grocery stores sells for $5 & up.

Also got a basket full of zucchinis & a basket full of limes for $1 each - you know, like on the clearance table.

All in all, a good haul, but I don't think I'll go there too often mainly because it was a bit of a drive. I'm not in that area of town often but I would probably stop by if I ever am!

Wow May. Sounds like you had a good time! Sadly, I have to say I have not been in a long while. I have gotten into the habit of going to Central Market at 8am every Saturday to beat the crowds. But now you're making me want to go again!

Oxbow seems to be doing okay, better than Copia right next door. The gardens there look so sad. Part, maybe half, of the gardens at Copia have been taken over as kitchen gardens by local restaurants so they are not open to the public. They are pretty to look at, though, as they are tended. The other part of the gardens are in a weedy unkempt state.

I think Oxbow has some empty stalls still but seems to be slowly filling up. I wander through occasionally when I am there for work. The food emporiums and eateries seem to have business enough. Some boutique shops I believe have gone away. Napa is very foodie. And it is located within walking distance of downtown where there are several new hotels and right up the street from two other very nice hotels.
