Miracle, the movie

comes on tonight at 8 on ABC. I saw the documentary about this team, and it was GREAAAT! Watched it over and over and brought me to tears each time. It's a good story about the US Olympic hockey team that beat the Russians, which was a much, much better team that always won. The game was the 1980 Olympics during the time Iran held the US diplomats hostage, and the whole world viewed the United States as chumps. It was a big victory for all of America.

When the hostages were released the following year, they were shown a tape of the game as part of their debriefing to help re-instill American pride. I don't imagine the movie will address that or how the Russians felt about losing. They were very cocky and declared to beat the Americans on American soil, only to end up completely stunned and ashamed to go back home to Moscow.

Great movie if you're able to see it. I haven't seen it yet but really look forward to it.

My husband is a big sports fan and a lover of movies. He considers this the best sports film ever made. He said Kirt Russell really captures the temperment and quirks of the late hockey coach Herb Brooks. As a woman, I loved it too. It really captures the spirit of the Olympics. Seeing the actor playing Jim Craig shout "I showed you" brought ters to my eyes and chills to my spine. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be tuning in.

That is a great movie. My DH watches it every time it comes on t.v. He loves it.

Good Thread!! My favorite movie that I must watch every year, since I saw it on T.V. when I was really little, was "Santa Clause the Movie" It has Dudley Moore in it, as well as John Lithgow. My tape is getting pretty old, but I love that movie soooo much. Has anyone seen the Wookie Christmas Special? It's absolutely hysterical. My BIL is a Star Wars fan and just happened to get his hands on a copy of this. Harrison Ford doesn't even like to awknowledge this film, that's how "bad" it really is. Think about a half hour of wookies "talking". Hehe, Happy Holidays!!

Oh, Christmas movies... so many of them are wonderful! However, I haven't a favorite one, just some of them that I particularly like since they remind me my childhood, when our family gathered together. The first one is The Bishop's Wife: I remember having watched this movie, lying behind the sofa as I would have been in bed... The second one is a French one (obviously) which in French is called "Santa Claus is a junk" - there has been an American remake that I did not appreciate at all: "Mixed Nuts" with Steve Martin (like this actor!) I think. The third one is Dial Code Santa Claus (also French movie) and the last one that I've probably watched a THOUSAND TIMES is... "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" Chevy Chase is a wonderful actor! I really enjoy watching this movie!!!!

I've never seen the Shop Around the Corner but it looks interesting. I read about it and the movie You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is based on the same play that Shop around the Corner is based on. There are articles that support it as a Christmas movie but having not seen it, I can't say. However, as a die hard fan of Die Hard.....

I don't see many movies, and have been pondering if there are any that I would watch again or have watched again. A few came to mind: Yankee Doodle Dandy (James Cagney) Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version) A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version) Various other movies from the 1930s & 1940s, when I had access to TCM and AMC, and when both showed mostly movies (Cagney, Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, Crosby - if enough years have passed since the last time I saw them) Battleground Moonstruck Out of Africa Master and Commander (just recently) When my DD was an early teen, she loved a movie called "Wish Upon a Star" with a young Katherine Heigl. She watched it multiple times so inadvertently I did also. Should I count the things that she watched over and over as a toddler? The TV production of Peter Pan with Mary Martin was watched daily for over a month - she learned all the moves to the dance with Tiger Lily.

The Russians were professional players, while the US team were college kids. That made it a REAL big upset and miracle. Wonder if the movie will show us some of what the players called "Herbisms." He really rode them hard, made them hate him so they'd become a more cohesive unit. Only been on 45 minutes so far and good already.
