When you get your fabric, the pattern will be centered, or the design will fall so that you have one on either side of center. I think you'll need to plan on having yours hang shorter than mine, as your window appears narrower and shorter than any of mine.

That's a very easy adjustment to make, though! Tell us the dimensions of your window, and how wide the area is that you use to hang your valance. I can't tell how high and wide your rod is behind that trim.

Probably all you'll have to do is use a bit shorter piece of fabric than I do.

Ok the width is 33", length to the sill is 37", and the rod I have the current valance on is 35".

I have one of those cheapy little white, metal rods. I'm not sure what they're called. There isn't room to make that rod wider. That's the main reason I went with that. I do wonder about it being sturdy enough for me to tie the rope stuff around. I could always replace it.

Now what do you think about the amount of material?

I'm assuming I should also wash it first?

Oh and while I was at JoAnns today I was overwhelmed with all the stuff. Fusible web,does it all work the same? What color thread should I use? Red? I read that you should pick one of the darkest colors and if you can't match it exact pick something a little darker? Is this correct?

Fusible web all works the same - just be careful with it so it doesn't melt to your iron - be sure it's covered by the material. Yes, the dark red thread will be the best. Don't worry about it showing too much, especially since you have that little "scallop" running from cupboard to cupboard. And tho your rod may be a "cheapie" unless the fabric is really heavy, it should still work.

From your post, it sounds like you've already purchased the fabric. How much did you get? How long it hangs once you're done is essentially up to you - how much you 'fluff' it and how tightly you 'strap it up' - does that make sense? You'll probably 'futz' with it for a few days to get it exactly to your liking. But that's okay. That's the fun of it.

Thanks Scirish! I bought 4 yards of fabric. I'm also have matching stool covers made. They're going to have a tailored skirt on them with gold piping. So maybe I should make the length a little shorter to start? I don't want it to be too bulky that you don't really see the pattern.

I'm sorry I haven't been around. I work from home, and this is my busiest time of the year. I worked 44 hours in three days last week, and 9 hours on New Year's Day. Just so you know that I may not always be able to help you much from afar. Sorry!

I don't use fusible web, so am not sure what you want me to tell you about that. Do you have someone who lives near you who sews? Maybe they can help interpret the instructions I wrote. I hoped they'd be clear enough for people to work with.

Maybe if you re-post asking for general sewing help, you'll get replies from others who can help you, like sc-irish did above, when I am unable to be on the board.

And as she says, it's really up to you how long and wide you want to make your treatment - everyone's windows and taste is different. I always use the full 54" width and I most often make mine 1 1/4 yards long. Also, as sc-irish says, the futzing (I call it 'finger fluffing') is where a lot of the look comes in.

My3dogs - Thanks for getting back to me! I see you typed fusible TAPE not web. Drat! I'm assuming these are different?
"Press the ties just as you did the valance rectangle, making sure your seam is even on the edge. I fold in the raw ends and use my fusible tape to close them, but you can machine stitch them closed or do it by hand - Your choice. Your valance is done!"

You can either use your fusible TAPE (or web, same difference) to close the ties.....OR....iron the edges in on both sides, and VERY carefully sew them - either/or. Don't angst so much. And, as M3D suggested right at the beginning of her tutorial, perhaps making a 'dry run' with cheap fabric would be best for you.....before you cut into your specific fabric. That way, you can get the hang of it first, and then apply your new-found expertise to the 'real thing'. Good luck.
