Anyone Have a Soda Stream?

I've seen these things around and have been wondering if they're any good. I would love to make my own simple syrups instead of the premade cola varieties they offer, and I like the idea of not buying and wasting aluminum cans/bottles.

Does anyone have one of these? What do you think; are they worth it?

I don't personally have one but my son does and he loves it. In his house his partner enjoys sparkling water and they use it plain and also to make other types of soda like diet coke etc. They are very happy with theirs.

I've had mine for several months now and I love it. My recycling bin is noticeably lighter :-). I drink plain seltzer by the liter...my husband likes the Dr. Pepper taste-alike. You won't be saving money as far as the cost of the carbonator refills, but I like having it always available and ready.

It's great for a party where you can offer people choices without investing in large bottles of sodas. I haven't yet made my own syrups, but there is a line of all-natural syrups put out by the makers of SodaStream. My local Bed, Bath and Beyond just started to carry those syrups, but they're rather expensive.

I have one and use it everyday. I like the caffeine free diet cola. I also love the flavor essences, but only the lemon. But those are expensive. I try to find some lemon oil cheaper... just a drop or two goes a long way. My DD likes to just have flavored seltzer water than sodas. My DH likes all the sodas. The refill on the cartridge isn't that bad. I get it at walmart. 15 bucks, to exchange the cartridge. It goes a long time though.

Soda can crusher, anyone?

I don't think it would work. We have a can crusher mounted on wall studs beside of our recycling tubs. Because it has an arm that swings up and must swing out and down, it would take up way too much cubic space for a cabinet. Plus I don't think anyone would want to get down on their knees, reach up in a cabinet and crush cans. Do you have a utility room?

Kaismom, I had the exact same path as you Pelligrino > Isi seltzer bottle > Penguin. Agreed the Isi bottle was a total waste, and as soon as I saw the Penguin I knew I had to have it! If you buy their soda flavors, buy small ones at first because they may or may not be to your liking. I didn't like them and I returned them all. But now it looks like they have better flavors and ingredients, like real sugar. But I like to make my own concoctions, with sugar syrup, ginger juice concentrate (just found that one!), frozen lemonade mix, mint leaves, etc. Yum. I like hearing recipes that others are using. Bobbbeig, (I like all the Bs, was tempted to add a few more...), I considered a setup like yours. Agreed it is far cheaper. In the end, once the Penguin came on the market, it was too easy to resist. Plus, I only go through a CO2 canister about every 6 months. But it's a good way to go if you are a high volume consumer of bubbly drinks.

Baking soda in your iced tea, anyone?

The same guy on the tea forum, when discussing sun tea said he thought it wasn't exactly safe. Something about bacteria being able to grow from the tea sitting outside in the sun for hours. I never thought about bacteria, have made sun tea before and so far haven't gotten sick. I sweeten my tea, hot or cold, by serving, not in the pitcher or pot. The artificial sweeteners are really too sweet for me but if that's all I have on hand I use that. I've never tried honey in iced tea only in brewed hot. Anyone sweeten iced tea with honey?

I have one, as well and I am really aggravated with the manufacturers! The sole reason I purchased this thing is the Ruby Red Grapefruit soda. It is a dead ringer for the Ruby Splash Sierra Mist that has been discontinued.
The month after I got my Soda Streem, they stopped making the syrup for the soda I love.
grrr....
