Your favorite topping for pancakes?

We are having a Mardi Gras luncheon here on Tuesday, and we're asked to bring toppings. I like just syrup, preferably maple. I need to get one or two toppings (if I can get out to the store tomorrow.)

"Courtney, MG has an agenda on these forums, which is to get people to embrace conventional agriculture with it's huge scale, poisons, synthetic fertilizers, depleting of underground aquifers, chimerical genetics, and etc. He's been scolded for bringing that agenda to this particular forum, so now he resorts to sneaky stratagems like claiming that his home-grown produce tastes the same as some tired junk grown on depleted fields, picked too early and sitting around in a truck and store shelf for a week or more." thanks pnbrown for telling us that! Once I heard him say he makes sauce from canned tomatoes I knew something was up! ;)

My favorite 5 1.'The Florentine' which is the Old Rose garden at Morcom Amphiteatre of Roses' on the corner of Olive Street and Oakland Ave. in Oakland, California. Walk down the long staircase and look at the dates of introduction on the signs, inside the oval stone-walled area. If the dates are between 1804 through the late 1900's you're in the right place.. I love this park because in summer I enjoy walking on the outer paths where it is green and leafy with a few acres of tall trees..In early spring the Banksiae are in bloom among the trees, and also the wild roses we got from Miriam Wilkins estate. There is a gigantic rose that has been there for more than a decade, that I think must be R. brunonii and a couple R. moschata planted by the Noisettes. There are c. 2 dozen different cultivars of Pernetiana roses, and Tea and Chinas. a huge Catos Cluster' which on Manettii has grown to be more than 18 feet tall. It's a great place to ramble.. There are two modern rose gardens, too and a reflecting pool. Because by city law, the roses cannot be sprayed with anything, I go there to get cuttings from some of the healthier roses for our area... with my permission slip on hand. 2. Vintage gardens home garden. My idea of heaven, especially the south side of the house garden where two 25'+ tall 'Long John Silver' rosebushes bloom showing huge silvery white powder puff like roses, past those are many of the once blooming roses including 'The Garland' which are planted in a lush grassy area planted with other bushes, purple clematis, foxglove, increasing the beauty to a crescendo. 3. San Jose Heritage Rose garden. I do wish it had a shaded area with seats, and a drinking fountain and closer bathroom facilities for the aged, and the infirm. I've gotten heat exhaustion there more than once. 4.Lovely Luanne has a beautiful rose garden. Her yearly "whiffing event" is coming up soon. We've been neighbors for several years, in Oakland, and now in Richmond, California.. It takes a beautiful heart to grow beautiful roses...which she does.. 5. The Berkeley Botanical Garden' in California. I love their R. odorata and apothecary roses, and R. arvensis all planted near the Chinese Medicinal garden where R. rugosa and R. chinensis spontaneaa (sp?) are growing. Their R. odorata is covered with hundreds of large saucer like golden-yellow blossoms and blooms between March and April depending on how warm or cold its' been. It was more than 30 feet tall the last time I ooohed and ahhheed over it. I've been a tiny bit miffed at the folks who run that garden for their planting vivid red Florabundas ("for color") in their Old Rose Garden as I think it misleads the public. Theres' not a single Gallica in the Old Rose Garden and many of them, with the Hybrid Chinas would bloom well up on the hills where at least some frost and winter chill comes in winter. Lux.

Maple syrup only -- and it's actually in the fridge. Even when I was a kid, i preferred butter on my pancakes, and just wanted two or three tablespoons of syrup for the flavor -- at that point it was Aunt Jemima, usually. Now, on the rare occasions that I eat pancakes at home, i use maybe one tablespoon -- again for the maple flavor, and just the real stuff. The fake stuff is too much HFCS, and the flavor is... off. Granted, sugar is sugar -- and the real stuff costs money -- but I go through a small bottle about every two years (which is why it's in the fridge), and the most recent bottle was a gift from my GC, whose son in law taps his own maple trees. (Yay New England!) I'll use maple syrup in recipes that call for brown sugar, sometimes. (PS, I have a 1-pound bag of organic palm sugar that has lasted three years, and still has stuff in it. Other than honey, which I use about as often as the maple syrup, there are no other addable sweeteners in this house (discounting a small collection of sugar/sucralose packets for guests to sweeten their coffee with, should they so desire). When I tell people I'm really not a sweet tooth -- it seems I mean it!)

Dave My grafted meiwa produces fruits that are mostly pulp and skin. Those are the best attributes to me. It is the juice that has the sourness. I go to a bar regularly for the food and water with lemon. One the juice is squeezed out the flesh is quite tasty. Never had a marumi. If you can find seeds, Marumi trees grow well on their roots. They are listed as a rootstock choice for dwarfing larger trees. from a past thread jinnylea Steve, I have a 3 year Marumi Kumquat purchased from Four Winds this spring. The tree was a bit on the small side but blossomed almost continuously and produced a number of round fruits which I let a few mature on the tree to taste. The fruit are roundish, thinner skinned, sweeter, juicier and mild compared to the Nagami. I really liked it. I have only tasted one Meiwa Kumquat off of my tiny tree so far and the peel tasted like soap. I am sure the flavors will change as the tree matures. The Marumi tree is supposed to be very cold hardy..I have to say that my Nagami Kumquat suffered severe branch dieback immediately after it bloomed and produced a lot of fruit last winter. Sadly, my Marumi Kumquat is showing a bit of branch dieback back also after a continuous bloom and fruit set , but not as severe. I have no idea why. Drives me crazy. I did save seed to plant. I am still young enough to remember what soap taste like. My mom washed my mouth out with soap many times for ()^&^$%^&).

I prefer Maple Syrup(the real stuff) but my husband likes jelly on his.Strawberry or Red Raspberry. We also like the frozen strawberries,thawed,of course! LOL!

I like butter on mine, but since they want you to bring different toppings, how about frozen blueberries (thawed), To thicken them up a bit you could mix a little cornstarch with water and heat until thickened. That would work with any berries, I imagine.

Chopped pecans mix with syrup is good, too. They may have both of those already made at the grocery. Never looked for them, though.

Just had another thought--how about canned apple pie filling warmed?

Remember when in Hawaii, I had pancakes topped with chopped macadamnia nuts. Fantastic!

A resturant here (coffee shop) has a jar of peanut butter up on the shelf for folks who like it on their pancakes. It tastes pretty good too (I just had to try it) although I never heard of putting PB on pancakes...... Back away from this post Glenda....back away :-)

I'm a fussy one about pancakes. Real butter and NH maple syrup.
DH likes chocolate chip pancakes with syrup.
Now if you were asking about french toast...that's different. Butter and Marion berry jam, thank you very much.

I had them once in a restaurant (don't remember it's name) and they served warm praline sauce with pecans and chocolate whipped cream. Real good, probably a million calories, and more like a dessert. Dottie

I like to chop up apples and cook them in butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Top the pancakes with that and then Maple syrup.

DH likes Raspberry jam.

Blueberry pie filling is great.

Now I want some of all these!

Never head of peanut butter on pancakes, it would have to be good though. Homemade blackberry jam... reminds me of when my DM made it. So good. Warm praline sauce with pecans and chocolate whipped cream; now that sounds very Mardi Gras-ish. I never heard of chocolate whipped cream either. And anything with blueberries is great.

I just remembered about a friend of mine ordered pancakes at a restaurant ans had salsa on them! That didn't look appetizing at all. Dottie

I used to make Strawberry butter for pancakes & French Toast every day when they were in season. I simply softened some butter, beat in some cream cheese & added the berries which I had processed in a course chop & drained in a colendar(to drain any juice), just before adding to the butter mix.
Delish! I've done it w/raspberries too but some folks don't like the seeds in the raspberries.

There are three toppings that I love....blueberry pie filling , apple pie filling or just a really good maple syrup and butter.
