How Terry is being remembered (2 pics)

I hope you're not tired of hearing about my cousins. Barbara is the one who does the paintings and made the mittens for me. We are the daughters of sisters. Terry, daughter of the third sister, died in September, a day or two after receiving a liver transplant. It was terribly sudden, and many of you prayed with me for a better outcome.

Terry's community has remembered her in a number of wonderful ways, and I wanted to share one of them with you. One of Terry's volunteer efforts was the painting of barn quits--huge wooden "quilt blocks"--which were then mounted on the sides of barns. It was part of a beautification project in the area where she lived.

A local organization created a 2009 Barn Quilt Calendar, and dedicated it to Terry. Here's the dedication (I added her name at the top), along with a picture of the whole back of the calendar. It's gorgeous--they did a wonderful job.

wow... that is such an honor. What a nice remebrance. I remember that you posted pics of barn quilts here. Or maybe it was just one of hers. She looks/sounds like she was a lovely lady that her community will miss.

The Eucalyptus in the second pic is still going strong - even through all these frosts. So is it a perennial for you, or is it maybe in its first winter. I was just reading some about some hardier varieties that are tolerate of temps down to 10 degrees or so. I know I'm a sissy rose grower. I'm going to be bold and try some "real" roses soon. I don't think of Knock Outs as being for sissy rose growers...lol. Maybe you need to lighten up on yourself. Also in the third pic screaming at you up from the front - crepe myrtle - cherry dazzle from the razzle dazzle series. Boy those are so cute. I was reading about those today too, and see they would not be hardy here. I'm a lavender lover too. It is often hit or miss here though as to whether or not it will return. I 'might' have cuttings to some in the spring once I see what has survived if you might be interested. Your golden forsythia is amazing! One day, I'd love to trade you for a cutting or two:) Chances are there are numerous ones out there that are rooted when they touched down to the ground...maybe even branched some by now. Would gladly send some if/when you are interested. I also have a dwarf forsythia that only gets about 3'tall, but spreads sideways. It does not bloom so well in the spring, but I like the narrow leaf foliage and the fall color really well. Cuttings are available on that one. Here is my no name crepe myrtle. It only gets about 8' tall by 8' wide. This year it bloomed, and the blooms faded and then there was a second flush of blooms. I had never had it do a double bloom like that before. Sue

You have inspired me. This is now my next project (after the bathroom is finished). I have always thought this piece was ratty looking but it served a purpose in our bedroom. The cat sleeps on top and the TV is there also. I also use it to keep my office papers. Thanks to you it will soon have a new look. I just checked it out a bit and noticed that the drawers are dovetailed but could not find a manufacture's name. Do you know who made yours?

Awww thanks guys. Having a rough weekend and the kind words are much-needed boon right now. Aktillery I remember you going through something similar. Glad to hear you're happier on the other side as well! I loved my previous houses, but I love my new life even more. :) Jenny, he and I had mutual friends through work/networking. Worked in related fields, etc. I briefly tried the whole Match.com thing, and it was a colossal failure. (for me, anyway). What I found out was that I was perfectly capable of being happy and content on my own, and so many guys were ready to get married after 3 dates. ugh. Not my thing, though I've had friends who had great success with online dating. He and I are very similar in that we're fiercely independent, don't need (or want) to see each other every minute of the day, etc. Dazzleme, it's a royal pain. I've done in 2 houses now. I lay down large plastic sheets (in an empty room) and spray the ceiling in roughly 3ftx6ft sections, wait a few minutes, then use a drywall mud applicator to scrape it off. I just let it all fall to the floor, wrap up the plastic and throw it away, then re-texture and paint the ceiling. I "inherited" 7.5ft ceilings, so the shadows from the popcorn made it seem not only dated, but much shorter as well. urf.

I remember when you first posted photos of the Barn Quilts and you mentioned that your cousin was involved. They were so eye catching I wanted one for my mountain place. What a wonderful memorial to a unique individual.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I mentioned the barn quilts here when Terry told me about them, some months before she got sick.

It's funny--people comment all the time about the family resemblance, but we didn't look anything alike when we were younger. I looked like my dad, and Terry looked like hers. But when we got older (a lot older), we apparently started looking like our mothers' side of the family. I guess it became quite striking. We were delighted when people said we looked like sisters.
